Is there a future in email marketing?

Hi all,

Recently I am thinking of helping my offline clients set up email marketing systems for their various businesses. You know how it works: you create a list, load up with autoresponders, have OTO page and create campaigns on a regular basis.

Question is, with so many other marketing channels - some claim to be the future of marketing (social media, mobile marketing etc), will email marketing still be effective in the long run?

What have always been consistent online? Email, what comes ago, fads like Facebook etc... Email will be here for the long term, atleast in my eyes.

Eventually real mailing goes away and everything will be done via Email.

    Yes.

I'm with Vicky, above, in wondering whether it's a rhetorical question.

I think perhaps a more interesting question is whether anything much other than permission-based email marketing will necessarily remain effective to professional marketers in the long run (social media certainly won't, and rightly so).

What difference would it make if I told you "Yes"
    or "No"?

If it's working TODAY now in this moment, take
advantage of it. For your clients. For yourself.

Because if there's one thing for certain, it's this...

    ...forever never lasts"

Stats show email is dying and social media is what will replace it.
Of course email will be around for some time, but gradually things will move on.
Things are tightening up also in the marketing world so if a large chunk of Aweber's business is affected by new laws then this will have a knock on effect to email marketing.

      .
I doubt that many companies will entrust any social media platform to be their primary communication channel.

      That's eggs and basket suicide.

They predicted that snail mail would fade to nothing with the popularity of email and that didn't happen.

email is will be here to stay for some time yet I'm sure.

      Hi Troy,

Those stats are news to me. Can you share? In fact, email marketing continues to grow, not die. I'm going to assume these stats you refer to eminate from the same source as others who got the idea from an old and roundly discreditted post from WSJ about 3 years ago. If you really want to know what the immediate future holds then read this excellent collection of facts and trends from Jordie van Rijn.

Some facts to keep in mind:

      • No other platform or channel provides the power of flexibility of email. For example, it's transactional.

      • It's non-proprietary - Facebook or Twitter own their channels and can make changes in a second which can drasitically affect your business (we've seen this happen on FB especially). The laws you mention take much more time to develop and as opposed to FB or Twitter and other channels, you have a say in how those laws come about. In fact, you have organizations such as the EEC who fight for email marketers as they are doing now regarding new legislation being discussed in the states.

      • Smartphones are making email marketing even more relevant and powerful for marketing. This technology has re-energized email as the most potent channel to reach subscribers at the right time with the right message.

      • Finally, as I always say, Email is social. Any interaction between two or more individuals is a social inteaction regardless of the channel it takes place on. Email was the first social channel and those who have made it an email vs social thing are often motivated by their own agendas.
Email isn't dying. Email is evolving and so must marketers.

      Regards,
      jim

Email marketing and list building has a long way to go. It used to work earlier and it will work in future in my opinion.
Its much better than SEO or any other method as you reach to your subscribers directly and personally. Create a relationship with them you'll go a long way.

    Does it REALLY matter?

In the years to come, it's probably safe to say that email will have been replaced by something better.

Email is just the vehicle. There's a real person behind that email address and they're not going anywhere.

So get list building because you'll always be able to keep in touch with your contacts if you keep up with communication technology.

    Cheers,

    Neil

I think this will work for many years however just focus on what it is working now, when it stops working then you focus in something else.

I think that, because we are in internet marketing and get 100s of "sales" emails every day that it does not work any more because we just trash the vast majority of them

In the real world it is the best way for "your customers", whatever business they are in, to keep in touch with their client base via email. I would have said cell phone as well but most people handle their email that way now anyway.

    Thanks guys.

This is comforting. I will be helping my clients to set up email marketing systems and hopefully in the process, becoming an expert in this niche.

Of course, it always good to learn the current marketing trends out there.
