  • You mean Squidoo is cracking down on duplicate content just now? Seems as though they should have done that a year ago.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • Thanks for the link to the blog post. I view that as GOOD NEWS, both for Squidoo and for the lendmasters who create good quality lenses.

    • I agree. I use Squidoo as well, and I hate duplicate content. I like the fact that people will have to write real unique content now. In my opinion that helps more people.
  • You mean its another platform where we cant scrape other peoples content and fill it up with crap.....???

Thats going to annoy a lot of people....lol

    • Thanks so much for sharing my post, CJShu! Very kind of you. Hopefully, it will help some folks understand what all is going on with Squidoo.

No, it's not duplicate content that is the issue now (that was handled quite some time ago and Squidoo has a duplicate content filter in place) - this is about SPUN content. Spun content is a bit trickier to detect with a filter.

I view all this as very good news as well. Anything that makes the site better will make our results better.

Agreed - and thank you very much, Alexa!

Yeah really... go figure them not wanting copy/paste content on their site. Crazy! lol!

I'll keep an eye on this thread in case anyone has any questions. While I don't know much as far as exact specifics, I'll do my best to help.

      Thanks all!

  • I have no problem with the change, I think it's good. I tried my first lenses a few weeks ago that I never finished. It was actually fun to build, and I just turned on my dragon speech to text software and it was easy as heck. I think i will go back and finish that lenses when I get a chance
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Can't wait for more threads on how they lost their squidoo empire overnight because of their changes. Thanks for the post it was a good read!

    • Lol that is so true

Spun content is not worth it IMO, too many changes going on that can turn out to be a waste of time, trying to game the system.

  • I bought TBS a couple years ago, and spun one article, and it was just as much work IMO. I hate writing but didn't like spinning either. I think it's alot easier to just use a speech to text software to write original content. The day of trying to game the system is over, you would be better off building a solid foundation instead of building something that can be taken away from you at any time.

I think most of us learned our lesson when the Panda/Penguin updates came out.

Hey one question, I always wanted to ask you, why do they call you the pot pie girl? do you eat alot of pot pies :p
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Hahahha... no, it's not because of that nor is it because of my cooking skills (tho I am quite handy with a microwave...lol!)

It's just a nickname that stuck with me from back when I was interning for two online poker affiliates.

  • Yes I'm looking forward to these new changes to take place, Squidoo Lenses gain a lot of traction by the other lenses they are linking to, so the more high quality lenses and less rubbish on Squidoo the better it will be all round.
  • Squidoo updates of this nature seem to indicate a big google update. I think they get fair warning and then make change to combat them. Just something I have noticed in the past?

    • They are also cracking on big assortments of products for sale. They published a ten questions post from the call they did between the giant squids and Seth Godin.

Also they chose as example of what they want a lens where a lady did a salad sandwich, it looked yummy.

      http://www.squidoo.com/salad-sandwich-delight

Bottom line... they donĀ“t want the platform being used for marketing, they want real people with real stories sharing their passions who, by the way, make some money.

They also changed the squid angel blessings, apparently there have been lenses kept up artificially on top positions by blessings alone.

  • I use duplicate content on my Squidoo lenses. It's never been a problem for me.

The content I use has been written by me. I change it around a little bit but generally it's 90% of what I use on all my Web 2.0 profiles. I don't spin it, never have.

I think you probably mean syndicated content, don't you? You're referring to text that you've previously published elsewhere and then published again ("changed around a little") on a Squidoo lens? That isn't duplicate content. (Though it is breaching Squidoo's current terms of use). The differences between the two are briefly explained in this post and this little article.

However, if you're re-using the same content between multiple Squidoo lenses, that would indeed be duplicate content, because the domain's the same.

I suspect that, either way, Squidoo's going to get much more strict about this, anyway - either right now, or in another, later "re-think".

  • Hi Jennifer,

Yesterday I was making a Squidoo lens and I checked out some of the "Lens of the Day" lenses. Well, I must say I found a few lenses there that were nothing but Amazon advertisements. Sure there were pretty colorful pictures and the sites looked pretty. Apart from the intro some had very little writing. I simply could not see value in such lenses.

Does Squidoo really want value or are they after Amazon revenue? Just wondering

By the way I read your post it was very informative.

    • Hiya Dita =)

Well, first off, we need to remember that Squidoo IS a business so they absolutely do need to make money in order to thrive and succeed. Of course they want revenue and yes, they also want to provide value so that Google continues to send them that traffic.

To me, it's hard to define "value" in a cookie-cutter definition. If I'm looking for something online, I very well could find something valuable that another searcher would not. Value does not mean x amount of words, ya know?

As for the past "Lens of the Days" - don't be surprised if the choices start changing moving forward.

  • Thanks for sharing Jennifer....I have linked to your post from my blog.

I have a bunch of Squidoo lenses at the top but they are not letting me edit them. They are still live and getting hundreds of visits per day, but lets see if they get taken down.

I think a good strategy is to use Squidoo as a feeder site....write a bunch of high quality value and then send the traffic over to product review style articles.

This is a strategy I use with video marketing and works well for me, so will likely work with Squidoo.

    Cheers,

    Chris
  • In hindsight I'd have branched out to my own site years ago rather than investing so much effort at Squidoo. Such changes are inevitable, yes. I don't think members objected to the changes themselves as much as the timing and abrupt nature of them. The weeks before Christmas is an utterly ridiculous time for site wide changes. That was a direct hit on revenue for all that could have been avoided by simply waiting a few weeks. Some notice would have helped too, but there was none at all.

At least some notice was given about the more recent changes (spring 2013) and some leverage was given to more experienced lensmasters. I had opened a niche account, which was hit hard by their filters and yet my Giant account was barely even touched.

In general, of the free web platforms that offer revenue sharing options, Squidoo remains among the best of the choices available. Still I'd never recommend it as a main focus, way too risky in the face of that flimsy 'digital sharecropping' practice.
  • I hope that these new filters don't pick up genuine lens' - It must be quite hard to detect spun content, especially as there are some that are quite well-spun.

I hope that they sort it all out as I think Squidoo is an amazing idea. I keep meaning to do more on it but never seem to have the time!

  • Good news. Anything that rids the web of spam content, plr junk, and rehased, respun, barely readable articles is a step forward in the right direction.
  • Squidoo is like Google in that they are "holier than thou." They are in business solely to make money, no matter how they try to disguise it by being just "really wonderful people" full of sweetness and light.

They then tell the people who build their businesses for them, "Hey, we don't want you making money." ???

    • They know who they want adding information to their sites, and the changes they make weed slowly everyone else. They want people with passions, not marketers. They are the ones providing the marketing services to these people.

And of course they will take the share of the lion, because while people only receive compensation for the personal efforts, they receive compensation for ALL the efforts.

I thought I had found a way to make my thing and make them happy at the same time. With the last tweak in the policies I feel slightly pushed. What is fine, they are not the only game in town.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • I would say this is the time for IM guys to get out of Squidoo and use valuable time with other platforms or sites....!!!

The obvious truth is, using own website really rocks than Squidoo when it comes to commissions and sales.... even it is hard to rank own websites compare to Squidoo pages, the effort on own site worth than Squidoo...

May be with Squidoo, over night everything may go to Zero...!!!
  • They want free content creators, free of any form of compensation except a fore mentioned, "sweetness and light."

These people are otherwise known as "suckers."
    • [ 3 ] Thanks
  • I used to be a HUGE Squidoo fan. It was a great platform for publishing quality, unique content for quick ranking, list-building, and backlinking/SEO purposes. That is no longer the case. Their heavy-handed efforts to weed out spam too often punish innocent people. I know for a fact that they will lock/delete popular lenses filled with helpful, 100% unique content just because a so-called "spam" term was mentioned somewhere in the content.

The fact that they now "nofollow" all outbound links was probably the biggest slap-in-the-face to people who have invested large amounts of time and effort to publish high-quality content (practically for free!) on the site. If I can't even get a single dofollow link back to one of my own sites why would I -- or anyone for that matter -- make an effort to create unique content for Squidoo??
