How to record video on my computer screen?

I'd like to record some playbacks of webinars (including the audio) on my computer screen. Is there an easy, free way to do that?

I don't know what the file format is of the recordings, but they were done with gotowebinar, if that helps.

I want these recordings for my own personal use, rest assured I don't have any nefarious plans for them.

Why not just download the webinar video files? Would be a lot quicker than doing a screen recording of it as it's playing back.

Yes, I quite agree. But not everyone make their webinar recordings downloadable, unfortunately.

If you can play it back in your browser, you can download it. You just have to know how to find the actual URLs of the video files (pretty simple with Firebug).

If you don't know how to do that, you can always use a screen recording program to record the video as it's playing back. CamStudio is probably the simplest to use free option.

Whether or not you are legally allowed to download/record those files is another matter... I'm just telling you how it's done.

used camstudio in the past, it's free and works great. currently use camtasia. it's a bit pricey but has a few features i really like. camstudio however is just as good as camtasia for simple screen capture

I'm not saying it is the case with the webinars you are watching, but you might be surprised at how many webinars aren't even live.

If you can get to a webpage where it is displayed, just right click - view source - and start searching for the URL where is is downloading from.

A lot of times it is just Amazon S3. So just Ctrl+F for AWS or whatever.

I mean - that should work in theory. Not that I've ever tried it...

To record video, I've been using CamStudio for several years now. Does a pretty good job of screen recording along with the audio that I add via a headset.

any screen capture software will do that. Many of the best screen capture software options have free trials too.

But yeah, many times you aren't allowed to legally record live streams like that, though if it's for your own personal use I don't see how anybody would know.

Just do at your own risk.

But yeah, just do a search for any screen capture software to ever record your screen!

Kenster, usually when I record something I'm using the screen capture software to show a Google search result or something else like how to use certain software or something like that.

I agree, you'll get into trouble if you're using it to record a webinar or other type of video. You're better off just contacting the webinar owner and asking them.

Yep, it's one of those things where nobody will ever know assuming you keep it safe and to yourself, but i agree, always better safe than sorry!

With screen capture, you can generally change the recording dimensions to the exact size of the screen portion you need...just as an FYI to the OP

Download the FREE version of RealPlayer, and MOST videos including YouTube, Webinars, and of 'other nature' (clears throat) will have a "Download This Video" box that appears in the upper right of the video.

Also, RealPlayer allows you to convert MOST files to your preferred format, and can be viewed on smartphones or the player of your choice. I use RealPlayer for all my music, videos, etc...

I like Camtasia for screencasts, but in this case, RealPlayer would be a good FREE choice for downloading existing videos.

I've done that with Camtasia and it renders well.
Not tried CamStudio, although I heard good things and of course it is free whereas Camtasia is quite pricey.

Just to add another option into the mix, Blueberry Software's BB Flashback Express is another good free one.

If I need to do screen capture I usually use Camstudio and have done so for years, but recently I've found myself using BB Flashback Express more and more. Both are good though and I've never had a need for anything else

You can record and watch tv shows so long as they are for your own personal use so I don't see why a webinar recording would be any different. Let's face it, the only person who could take action against you is the person who held the webinar. Most webinars are only concerned with selling you something so why would they really care if you record the webinar... it's only going to make it more likely you purchase their offer. Just don't share the recording with anyone, obviously.

Like a few people above have mentioned already, Camtasia 8 is an inexpensive and rather simple way to record your screen...it is simple enough to get up and running right away for a newbie and has lots of "extra" features if you really want to take it up a notch and make things fancy.

I don't think is a good idea to record it through the computer screen because the resolution of video will become worst and dizzy .
I understand that some seminar and video do need you paid for download it , but if it worth then you should go for it while it can replay as much times as you can and share among your friend and subordinate.

    Hi

If what you are "capturing" is a video and not on-screen activity, then it would be better to just use a stream recorder to record the video stream rather than recapture it as it plays. You keep the same video quality too.

You can use something like VSO Downloader or Orbit to save streaming video to your PC. Both are free. VSO has a paid upgrade but the free version would work for your purposes.

They grab the video stream that is being fed to your browser and record it to a file. You can have multiple streaming videos downloading at once. Once the tool grabs the stream, you don't have to stay on the page or keep your browser open.

PS There is also Ant, which is a browser plugin: ant.com

Camstudio is my favorite choice. Then next is Camtasia. There's a software called "Camtasia for internet marketers" that i believe is free online.

  • if you have a mac i use screenflow it's an amazing software, the quality way better then camtasia and it crashes less. I used camtasia for about 5 years before i switched.

Camstudio and Microsoft Expressions are two free screen capture software programs for Windows.

I find that Camstudio can be 'buggy' at times. I love Microsft Expressions, however you can only record 10 minutes per video with the free version.

Instead of trying to record my videos I always found it easier just to copy the link or the url from whatever the domain is present...go to a website called convertfiles dot com and paste the link in the box where it says input choose the format(any format you want) for the output and it will give you a link for free, click on it and it will automatically download to your computer.
