5 hours of Video Wasted...

Ahhh man, I'm heart broken... I just recorded like 5 hours of video. There must have been a bad connection on the mic input. About every 15 seconds there is a loud static noise that is very annoying - through all 5 hours of video.

I didn't even realize until I just started to edit.

Looks like I know what I'm doing tomorrow...

I'm sure there has to be some stories out there like this? Give me your best story, make me feel better about my day. What did you screw up?

Successful people are those who don't give up! It is really unpleasantly to experience such a situation, but we must continue working until we succeed, am I wrong?

Cheers bro and successful working day tomorrow!

See if you can get it mended by an audio expert on Fiverr.

Similar has happened to me. I recorded about 40 mins and realized there was interferance that sounded like a Sinclar Spectrum loading up a game all the way through the video.

I didn't go about fixing it though as I dropped the audio section of the product I was developing for other reasons.

There should be a way to minimize that audio spike - try running the separate audio track through audacity and edit out the spikes and normalize the audio.

Try this method to separate audio from your video:
How to Extract Audio from AVI, WMV, MPEG, FLV, MOV Video Files for Free

After that, input the video and audio back into a video creation software and make your final product.

I wouldn't burn another 5 hours only to find the same result - I'd find a solution I can use over and over again whenever the same thing happens.

Thanks guys! I've done a lot of video. This is the first time it happened to me.

I do feel that you are correct, I'm sure I can minimize the spikes quite a bit... But after each spike is followed by about a half second of silence. I talk fast, so it usually missed a couple words after each spike.

I once spent at least a day-and-a-half trying to get the
audio on my last computer to record in Camtasia.

    I tried almost everthing:

I updated the drivers, un-installed and re-installed my
    software like Camtasia Studio, etc.

    No luck.

Then I opened-up the PC to take out the soundcard,
clean it and make sure it was slotted in right.

    Still no cigar.

Then, just before I was about to bash my head against
the wall, I found the source of the real problem...

The Plantronics headset that I was using had a small
switch on the cord that had been accidentally flicked
over to mute the sound from the headset mic.

I just burst out laughing at the lengths I'd gone to in
my stubborn attempts to solve a very simple problem.

Anyways, the key lesson to learn is to record your
video and audio in smaller chunks so you can check
your inputs and outputs along the way.

If it's just a screencast video (with no in-person video)
you can edit your video down and then re-record your
audio again over your tightly edited video (that's what
    some of the pros do).

    Dedicated to mutual success,

You have to invest in a top of the line mic, nothing worse than static noise in a video, especially after you spent 5 hours making them

I learnt this lesson in the past. Always do a 1-2 minute test recording before you start any serious video recording. Things like this happen from time to time but if you do the test recording first you won't be wasting hours of your time.

just put silence in your video
and revoiced that may help the problem
but anyway i know how you feel
sometimes am working on a project for hours
you didnt save it and in the end your computer crashes
and f*ck you waste a lot of time
since then i try to save my work every 15 minutes
or everytime a do a major change
    and keep backups

I might also add that this is why I always make my videos much shorter nowadays. Customers and viewers much prefer to watch multiple short videos than one long and drawn out video. It makes it easier for them to find the information they are looking for. It also makes it easier for you if you ever need to update any part of the video. Rather than having to re-record a 1 hour video you only need to re-record a 5 or 10 minute video.

It makes a lot more sense.

It wasn't Camtasia, it was real video.

It was about 14 medium length videos! I just went balls out today and recorded a whole bunch of stuff that I had been wanting to do.

The mic has always worked well. Lesson learned! That's for sure.

Oh ya, I've re-done stuff a bunch over the years that screwed up... not fun, but maybe it'll be better quality the 2nd time you record. Less nerves or something..

Is there anyway you can edit it out?

Worst for me has been when photoshop crashes and you forgot to save or the same thing happens with word and it does not recover your work!

    5 hours of video though!

    Feel for you man!
