Not your usual Squeeze vs Letter question

Hey everyone,

I have searched for an answer on other similar threads but haven't found it yet. Sorry in advance if this is a bit confusing!

The Question is: should my give away product have a squeeze page or sales letter? Note: I won't be capturing leads as it doesn't seem to be the done thing in this non-IM niche and believe myself it probably isn't necessary.

Background: I'll be giving away an e-book where the OTO (membership site) and other giveaways/products will be referred to in the e-book in a few spots (membership site is a further assistance type thing if required). My goal is getting as many people to download the give away as possible as that will also increase membership numbers.

Normal practice in this niche is simply to have a sales page with NO form of lead capture, however, most of the sites are 5-10 years old. Either they haven't got around to updating their methods or they haven't needed to and just the sales pages are still effective.

I am aware that the two leaders in this niche are CB vendors and probably rely mostly upon affiliate pre-selling before the sales letters are reached.

It is also worth noting - none of the big guys in this niche give away free product.

Any recommendations?

Thank
Russell

    Big mistake.

We as marketers know that it often takes upwards of 7 exposures to an offer before people make a purchase. We also know that an average sales page will convert anywhere from about 1-5%. That means the other 95%+ of visitors you are working hard to get to your site are just wasted... that is unless you collect their data and followup with them. That's the whole point of list building.

Who cares if it's the 'done-thing' in your niche or not. Do you want to be like all the others in your niche or do you actually want to do what works and make sales? I know which one I'd choose. Just because others in your niche don't know the value of list building doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. In fact it will be even more powerful if it's not common practice in your niche since people will not have been exposed to it so much.

      Thanks your quick reply Will!

You've given me pause for thought - it probably is time for a a shake up in the niche - I know my give away content will be the first fresh information in the niche in a long long time and will be well received - maybe the marketing side of things is due for an update too and might just give me an edge!

      Thanks

        Russell,

Think about it this way. If you have information you think people will be willing to pay you money for, then they will definitely trade their email for worthwhile information as well.

After all, a squeeze page is just like any other transaction. The only difference is they are giving you their email address as opposed to money... and you can then followup with those people.

Hadn't considered JV partners as part of the mix, but you're right, there wouldn't be much opportunity for it in this niche. The leaders aren't talking about anybody else's products that's for sure!

        Thanks

I personally would not enter a niche if no one is collecting data on those who don't buy. But there is one thing to consider. You say the sites are old and pretty outdated. I'm going out on a pretty big limb here but there is a possibility that one (maybe more) could have a pretty nice size list of people who purchased. That would be an opportunity.

Now the question is how to find out that info.

I went looking for JV partners and actually found some potentials on this very forum. Thanks for prompting the thought!

Will makes a great point but I have another question. Why on earth would you ever even think about entering a niche where there are no other email lists??? Your number 1 traffic source is JV partners. You have none and according to what you said, you'll never get any.

Pick a new topic if it's really not the "done thing".

No matter what you do, you will want to capture the details of the visitors that comes to the website. This will give you the opportunity to follow up with them through email which means more potential sales for you.

Since you are already prepared to commit the time and money into promoting your website, you will want to make sure that you leverage on it by collecting the details of the visitors.

This doesn't have to be an either/or question.

You can do both...give away your lead generating product and
require people to opt in to get it...just do it on two different pages.

One tip though. With the optin offer your gift AND a valauble
    targeted email course.

That way your subscribers will be looking forward to the emails
you send them and they'll be far more likely to read them.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

As Will has said who cares if no one else is doing it, they probably just don't have a clue about internet marketing. There's tons of webmasters out there who don't. I've just entered into a new niche and the majority in it don't have a clue. Some have opt in forms on their site but then you opt in and nothing happens or you just get some crappy emails from them now and again that are done all wrong. Most don't even email when they update their site. A few are selling ebooks and not building a buyers list when they are doing it. They just don't have a clue.

I would and have entered into a niche where there's none or next to no email lists. Worked fine for me.
