Automated tools can only do what you tell them to, so no software is truly automated. I use TweetAdder for various tasks, including gaining new followers. It has the feature you asked for as well..

As far as social media is concerned, using software to generate followers is not worth.

    Why do you want followers?

You want followers because you want them to visit your site, browse through your product or services, get interested about what you do and what you are offering etc etc, in one sentence you want to get connected with them and turn them to your potential customer.

For instance, if you are dealing with finance website and get your followers from tech domain does it help you? The answer is no, because they don't belong to your area of interest.

So focusing on to relevant channel is very important, so that you get audience from the same niche, there's always greater chance that they would get connected with you.

But if you buy followers or use some kind of software that won't be of help to you, ultimately you have to help yourself by doing everything manually.

This just isn't true. The first part I agree with, but software has its place. He is not talking about manufacturing fake followers. He is asking what to use to gain followers, like those of another user.

I've done this multiple times in various niches, and automation certainly helped. I can set up an account for a local TV shop for example, and then use automation to follow every Twitter user within 30 miles of that shop mentioning the phrase - "I want a new TV". That's pretty targeted.

An other example is, I could create a tech news site, then scrape up a list of followers of other 'rival' tech sites, and follow all of those users. They are real people, and they are interested in tech. So the likelihood is if your account is offering value etc, the majority will follow you back. Again, these are pretty targeted users and automation can handle all of it whilst you manage other parts of your business.

If you are talking about buying fake followers etc, then I agree its pointless. Considering how easy it is to get real followers, I just don't see the point. Social-proof is one thing, but there are tools out that give you an idea of the amount of fake followers {you|a person} has. That can look bad to anyone anal enough to check, and those results could even be published online making you look even worse. I'm sure President Obama isn't happy its been revealed that 70% of his followers are fake!

Besides, whats the point in tweeting to 100k robots? You want real targeted followers, ones that are interested in what you're saying. Software can definitely help you find those people.
