How to launch a product on Twitter - Free Easy Guide

I'm seeing a lot of stuff going on about Twitter on this forum and not much of it is actually directed about how to launch a product on this great platform. So here's a quick guide I wrote recently - hopefully a great introduction for those who are just getting to know Twitter and an interesting discussion for those experienced Tweeple among us.

How to Launch a Product in Twitter

You have to be upfront about your product, be it an ebook, mp3, video, blog, application - make absolultely sure you know exactly what your product does for people. Take this information and start create yourself a 2 week tweet schedule.

This 2 weeks is cricital - you are going to get your followers to pay attention to you first in a sea of random comments and links.
  • You will introduce them to the business area of your product and give them tiny bits of information about it - this builds your credibility and begins their education.
  • Next you will introduce them to a problem that your product will solve and make it their problem.
  • Then you talk about how you can solve their problem, without any mention of a product.
  • Then you start introducing the methods with a little show and tell.
By the time you're finished they will:

Believe you are an expert in the subject
Understand their problem
Understand how to solve it
Be Ready to Buy Your Solution!

I personally prefer to schedule this series of tweets so I can go relax while I whip followers into a frenzy. Scheduling 2 -4 tweets per day seems to be the most effective numbers.

I see a link in everyone elses tweets shouldn't I do the same?

Use links on occassion but make sure they are 100% relevant to your goal but do NOT send them with ever post. You will often stand out by not using links and will definitely help people feel at ease with you.

The Landing Page

Next thing you need to think about is your Landing Page - again this is all pretty standard stuff BUT here is the difference. Where usually we would send our potential buyer to a sales page that's going to grab their attention and direct them to buy we must now be a lot more subtle. This is a method we like to use:

Twittermercial? (dumb name...)

Let's call this the Twittermercial method. Create a review page where someone is talking about your product, highlighting the real world benefits. The Twitter user is being handed some valuable information without being slapped in the face. They should end the page feeling they have learnt something and more importantly wanting to learn more.
The key is not to spam the poor Twitter user into hating you, you eaaaase them into your funnel.

Time to Launch!

So now you have your landing page and your 2 weeks worth of tweets what do you do next? Simple, you say hi to all of your followers by making a tweet that will definitely spike their curiosity. You will know if this has worked because you will get a tonne of direct messages. If you try and fail, do not worry too much. One of the things we have learnt about Twitter and this process is that people quickly forget a tweet, so you have several chances to get this right - which is more than can be said for most other media. Wait until you are sure that initial tweet has had an impact and then go with the 2 week cycle. Then you can deliver that killer link!

Much of this is very familiar to those people who run email campaigns and have been selling products for some time, but there are core differences when working with Twitter and there are not many tools out there that will automate the sorts of processes I have talked about.

That's a great post man. I use Twitter a lot, and that is the proper way to automate it and introduce your product. The one thing you didn't mention was to make a really attractive Twitter backround. What is your twitter account? Mine is Anthony and Justin (WBNetwork) on Twitter

It's really a gold mine but it does take some exposure and thought to get a grip on how best to use it.

The background thing is interesting, I quite like yours. I prefer to have a solid invigorating background colour so as to focus the reader. I think it's largely because I am so fed up of looking at hideous myspace pages =/
