How do I make my blog pop?

I am a blog newbie and I want to make my new blog about toxic beauty products look better so I can get more visitors. I want it to have a little more style...Eventually I want to create anther web site where I will be selling my ebook. Is my next step to create an e-mail list or should I try to give away a freebie to get people to subscribe to my blog?
How do I put ads on my blog of the types of companies I like? Also how can I look up on my admin page to see who or how many people have visited my site? Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You should check out the Wordpress flexibility theme at Flexibility Theme for WordPress. I'm using it on one of my hobby sites at Electric Chili. I just converted this site over to wordpress from Joomla.

Also, see my sig for my newsletter which I send out once a week that gives wordpress tips and tutorials.

Thanks, Rich. I was looking at some other posts that mentioned flexibility themes.

If you already had a blog link to show me that would help a bit, there are a bunch of things you can do, an audio or video intro or sidebar widget is always really cool, good content and consistant navigation is a key.

I'm really not supposed to give out this link to much as we are trying to restructure things but I have some blogging videos at wordpress.thedesktoptutor.com Check it out, I will be changing it up/taking it down in the next couple weeks.

You can shoot me a pm or email if you have any other thoughts/questions.

      Hi Blaine,

Thanks for your reply! How do I send you my page as the forum will not let me because I am new? I cannot PM either yet because I do not have enough posts. Thanks to all the other people who replied also!

  • Hey Organic Girl!

Glad to hear you're doing some blogging -- it's a terrific way to boost your ranking AND connect with your audience (if you update regularly with valuable information, and optimize it effectively for your targeted keywords).

If you want to make it attractive and more "readable", here are our tips:

    1. Choose a simple template -- anything too flashy is difficult to scan and read and may frustrate your visitors. Also, it may not load properly in old browsers.

    2. Go for black text on a white background for your actual posts. This is, again, best for your readers' eyes. Also make sure to break up your posts into small paragraphs, and use lots of bullet points and subheads to add "scannability".

    3. Use images that relate to the content of the posts, but make sure to size them properly so they don't break up your template.

    4. Don't overdo sidebar links (if you have a blogroll or suggested links, put them on another page or tab on your blog.) You'll end up sending people away from your posts before they've had a chance to absorb your information.

    5. Categorize and tag each of your posts with relevant terms your readers would use to search on, and look through your information. Don't overdo the options, though -- keep it as simple and focused as possible.

    6. Blinking or flashing ads can be distracting, as are ads that are larger than your posts or post images.

    7. Some of the most desirable advertisers won't put up an ad on your blog until you have some decent traffic (including those who use the major blog ad networks). Once you do see some traffic, try signing up with BlogAds and Chitika and CrispAds to get started. Also, make sure to set up some targeted Google AdSense.

    Hope that helps!
