Subliminal Messages on a Website?

This idea just flashed into my mind today. Does anyone know if such code exists already? Imagine putting short subliminal messages appearing on your website every 0.02 seconds or so, enough not to be spotted by the naked eye but registered by the subconscious.

This was proven to work. That's why it's banned from TV commercials and other advertisement media today.

Could there be a market for such plugin/code/script? Perhaps I could offer it for free, open source. Would you install it on your websites? If not, why not?

I'm still learning to code, but maybe someone else here has more experience and would perhaps like to discuss this idea more with me.

Cheers,
Zannix

  • Hell yea.. Frank Kern uses it. LOL.. I watched a video where he uses some custom settings in his Porsche to dish out subliminal messaging that makes people want to buy..

    Some might see it as unethical but imagine using it for Amazon products and things people actually want and need. Sales would be through the roof

    • I was not sure abt this but I have been from watching some Frank Kern videos on youtube and I felt violated by the wierd antics that could suggest subliminal messages
      I watched it anyway

      AND BY THE WAY. ALERT!!! I can see a subliminal on this page. I am not sure how that happened??? but if you wait a couple of seconds you will notice some words flicker on the screen
  • That actually sounds pretty cool. Wouldn't be that hard to do.
  • No I definitely would NOT use your plugin if you created it.

    I want my audience to see what I'm offering - in open
    view - and help them to make an informed decision on
    whether it's right for them.

    Why don't you spend your time and talent creating REAL
    value in the marketplace?

  • There have been some marketing pages using many different forms of subliminal messaging, in the past.

    The model you propose has a very big downside, and that is the speed of a pageload.

    When your pc memory is just about spent, or you are downloading a big file, or the web server is backing up, all these things can slow down the speed of your page, exposing your subliminal message, for all the world to see.

    There are other ways, you will just need to think differently.

    • Something like that could probably be easily accomplished by a simple javascript, which is run on the client side, so page loading wouldn't really be affected.
  • Manipulating people into purchasing your products...hmmm...alarm bells are ringing. How ethical does it sound to you inside your head?

    • Unfortunately, subliminal messages do NOT work. They're just a bunch of hype. Not a single well-done, independent study on their effects has proven them to have any meaningful effect. Of course, this doesn't stop the subliminal messages industry from being a multi-million dollar industry.
    • As ethical as using half naked female models to sell your products on TV.

      Perhaps you're right. I can't argue there because I admit I haven't done much research on the subject, I've just heard about it having an effect...
  • Since Websites are considered "other advertisement media" I believe you've answered your own question. Why not contact the FTC and ask.

    • But I don't think a blog is necessarily an advertisement media? I mean, it's a potential advertisement media, but so is almost anything everywhere. Would a subliminal "subscribe now" message be considered illegal used on a freebie squeeze page?

  • They still use subliminals in Vegas casinos... But if your product/sales page is strong enough, you shouldn't have to.

    • Why don't you get their address, go around to their house and hold a gun to their head?

      I bet it would increase conversions by more than 20%.

  • The following code will wait three seconds after page load and then flash the phrase "Buy Now!" on the screen for 3/100 of a second (paste in between body tags):

    ------------------------------------------------
    <script>

    function sublim(){
    var h = $(window).height();
    var w = $(window).width();
    $('body').prepend('<div id="sublim" style="color:blue;font-size:80px;margin:auto;position:absolute;z-index:1000;width:'+w+'px;height:'+h+'px;text-align:center;line-height:'+h+'px">Buy Now!<\/div>')
    setTimeout(function(){$('#sublim').remove()},30);
    }
    $(function() {
    setTimeout(sublim,3000);
    });

    </script>
    ---------------------------------------------

    If you aren't using jquery already, you will need to add the following in between your head tags:

    Code:

    <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.9.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
    P.S. - To the mods, for some reason, the system is crashing when I try to put the javascript between the code tags.

    • Amazing if there was a WP plugin for this, I'm sure it'd be popular

  • The best way to get your message across is to do it subliminally. Those flashing banners that scream out to you to click on them don't get good click through rates. When you put an optin form on your blog make it blend in with the design. You'll usually get a better optin rate if you do that.
  • I found some code for this on a google search a year ago for this. The only thing is that it was in html.

    • BTW, I would definitely use subliminal any copy writer worth their weight is using some type of subliminal persuasion.

      For those who say they wouldn't think about everything you do every day that you were taught and think about how/why your customers will not buy from you if you don't.

      It could be something so simple as writing dear at the beginning of a letter or saying please, or thank you.

      I know if I use red that you are going to focus on mundane things like sex, security, clothing.

      I know if I use yellow you are going to think about food.

      I know if I use blue you will focus in on communications.

      I know that people love circles in the prices 9, 5.

      So, don't tell me you won't use subliminal persuasion you already do.
  • Thanks for a thought-provoking topic! I'm with GlenShep above. Sure, everyone uses some Visual Marketing methods (one of my area of expertise) to help influence visitors.

    Sometimes it's unconscious, like the preconscious/subconscious Limbic system effect on a new visitor in the first milliseconds (before their thinking brain engages). Or it's simply directing the eye path with color, or doing color emphasis or even color scheme choice. Sometimes it's conscious, like your choice of layout, photos, boxes and buttons, etc. But it's not usually hidden from a savvy viewer.

    Really, your job is to build trust and a long-term business relationship based on that trust. If your visitors ever discovered you were using such tactics, all that built up trust would turn against you in an instant. Some people would probably be pissed off enough to try to put you out of business.

    Call me old-fashioned and tell me I'm "leaving money on the table, but I'd never do to my visitors anything I wouldn't want done to me.

    • I think if you tell them you are doing and make light of it they won't be pissed.

    their is a self development software out their that does thAT.

    Hypnosis - Faster & Easier than Hypnosis (Free Trial Download) - YouTube

    if the link doesn't work just type in "self hypnosis confidence" and the ad should be at the very top of the results.

    It would probably be a good idea to integrate this into every software product out their. I wonder if you could use this to build a zombie army. Like if you flashed words like, you're a zombie, you're really dead but you don't know it, you like eating brains. I picture a bunch of people just standing around waiting to be commanded.

    ZOMBIE ARMY!!
  • You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking about using such a sleazy and unethical tactic which preys on the unsuspecting to line your pockets with money. Shame shame. It's just wrong, unethical, immoral, and bad like things which are bad. Naughty, naughty. I can't believe marketers have sunk to such desperate lows. It's despicable.

    • haha that was awesome. anyway, i didn't mean to offend anyone, this thought occured more out of curiosity and interest in human psychology than an "arrogant attempt to boost my sales" or w/e.

      i apologize once again if I offended your moral stands, although I can imagine there are far worse things being done in the IM arena, such as offering shitty outdated and rehashed products.

      if subliminal messages are a method of persuassion, and so are sales copies, then what are you guys even talking about? why don't you just put up a bullet points and let your products sell themselves?

      yes i know these two methods differ in transparency, but there are many other details that improve conversions and affect your visitors on a subconscious level, even if it just means using different language patterns and colors. yet, we all do this and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.
    • There it is, sorry for raising an alarm...what does it say anyway?

      Oh! I will not send you $20, can I send $100? lol

  • I still think such a software could be useful. Not to deceive and manipulate people but for personal growth.

    It could be used for affirmations for example and sold to the self help niche. To help people reprogram their own minds while they are on the computer.

    I think it would sell if marketed well. After all, we all want to improve ourselves without doing nothing.

  • I'm sure I remember reading that this sort of subliminal message doesn't actually work - an urban myth. Yes, it was banned, but that was way back in the days when they didn't know any better.

    • way to late lol

      LOL if something doesn't work why would there be a need to ban it? I remember hearing about the ban ages ago, but after studying a little psychology and from those who actually use the technology to me it's like they need to start banning all the stuff being done today.

      When I saw the topic I was surprised that people were so against while all these different types of psychology, and technologies are used on us daily right down to the nanochip. It's more like we should be working on our own and also wondering how people would behave if they didn't have controls and handlers.
  • Interesting discussion. Actually, I need code to add subliminal messages on my web page; but unlike others using this technique secretively, I plan to inform people ahead of time that this is going to happen. There is a growing body of literature in the social sciences that suggest that subliminal priming can have a powerful effect on self-esteem, positivity, affect regulation, and openness to differences.

    I am putting together a web site, that augments my psychotherapy practice, where clients can practice building on strategies that they are learning in therapy. I plan to be very transparent about the techniques I will be using - called Secure Base Priming.

    Based on attachment theory, SBP helps people with insecure attachment to behave more open and flexible (the hallmark of secure attachment) for a short period of time. I am interested in testing out whether or not continual priming (five days a week over one or two months) will have longer-lasting effects. There is a growing body of data that suggests that mindfulness practice changes the brain. I am hoping for similar effects of SBP.

    What I need is this. One of the priming techniques used in social science literature is the flashing of words (20msec) on a computer screen while people are working at a neutral task. The words I would be using for example are love, secure, hug, etc. I need them to rotate as well as be located on various parts of the screen.

    The reason I need this on a web site, rather than sell an app is two fold. I can't program an app, but I want it to be cross platform and be even used on a tablet if people want. Is there a way to do this with java script or html? Thanks in advance for your ideas.
  • I know there are times when marketers want to sound sophisticated and
    intellectual but I see so many webpages that are not using the 101
    things that do work, why try to waste time with things that DON'T
    work? Beats me.

    Subliminal, NLP ... and the list goes on.

    -Ray Edwards
  • I would not put it on my site because i know that it does work! However, I want my customer to make their buying decision totally on their on.
  • Heck yeah, Subliminal messages are like Hypnosis, you can not make them do what they didn't want too, You are just adding twigs to the fire to get it started is all.

    I will keep my mouth shut on the negative posts but yes I would definitely use it and not feel none the worse about it. If they want it your just giving a push.
  • No, it wasn't.

    Then how do you know it has "proven to be true"?
    Tom Sawyer believed you could get rid of warts with a dead cat and the full moon. Good luck with that.

    Then they're not subliminal, are they.

    If it's text directly on the screen, then it is not "subliminal." It may be persuasive and it may trigger emotion or thought, but it is not subliminal. Psychological =/= subliminal.

    Which isn't subliminal.

    Red makes me think of strawberries.

    Yellow makes me think of boardgames and sweaters.

    Blue makes me think about how every single social media website seems to want to be some sort of shade of blue, and then I end up clicking over to the warrior forum so that I can imagine purple. (Get it?!)
