Traffic spike +1000% any ideas?

Hello All,

On my main website I get a bout 200 - 300 daily visits but over the last 3 days it has increased to 1500+ per day! Not that I am complaining but I checked google analytics and they are saying its all from America and they are just going onto the homepage and leaving again?

I was thinking it could be some sort of bot or something. Additionally none of them are returning well outside of the 200 - 300? Its all direct traffic so its not like from say the same IP... Should I be worried?

It is probably some spammer using proxies and a bot to send you clicks.
If you don't use something like adsense you will be fine. Because sometimes, such spammers click bomb your ads and force a ban from adsense on you.

If not then nothing, other than your hosting charges, to worry about.

I do use adsense, but I checked that they are just landing on my homepage for 15secs and going off again lol

If you go to Google Analytics, set it to the past 3 days (Top right) Click traffic source down the left hand side, and then click overview. It should tell you where these have come from.

You might also go to webmaster tools and see if you can cross check that with the keywords.

It could be bots, but it also could be visitors not finding the content they are looking for under those keywords.

It's possible that you are getting more traffic because of the recent Panda Update.

I once had that with a site of mine. about 50 uniques a day and then overnight was getting about 500 uniques. this lasted for months and I had adsense up as well. I only got traffic through SEO but i had no high rankings for any keyword.

        Never knew why that happened.

I'm starting to notice that with some of my sites...getting traffic from long-tail keywords that I wasn't even trying to rank for.

Yea possible but I can see they are coming from Solana Beach in the US staying for 15secs then leaving. Hence my curiosity. Suppose if its not affecting me then might as well ignore it.

It seems one of the common denominators between you all saying you have had this same thing happen is that your are using Adsense. As mentioned, this could very well be people sending you junk traffic to get your Adsense accounts shut down.

    Be careful.
