1st ever domain registration.

Hey Guys,

I'm taking the plunge in IM and registering my first ever domain.

I'm from the UK but want to buy a .com domain that I'm looking at. I want to target the US, so I need to register with a US firm right?

Can anyone recommend the best provider for my to achieve this? Cheaper would be nice but not exchanging cheap for quality.

Thanks

Godaddy or namecheap is what you need. Simply buy a .com and set your GEO target on web master tools to ''USA''

It doesn't really matter as far as domain registrations but I prefer NameCheap. Just do not go with the Daddy for hosting your domain. That's my 2 cents.

Personally, if I were you, I'd ask around friends and family first. Someone might have web hosting capabilities or know someone who does and they're often easier than the other suppliers. I've had no trouble with mine and after the first 6 months it's been much cheaper than GoDaddy, Hostgator, etc., claim to be.

It doesn't really matter where you register the domain, but I would, anyway (I always use Namecheap). What might matter is that if you're targeting the US you should have the site hosted in the US.

Never host the site in the same place where you register the domain-name: keep those two functions separate.

    Good luck!

I would do keyword research first on the topic you want to promote. Choose a .com domain name based on those keywords. I would purchase the domain from Namecheap and host with Hostgator. You will find lots of videos on how to do this on Youtube

I agree. Although exact match domains carry less weight with Google than they used to do I think it is still beneficial to have your keyword included somewhere in your domain. Do the all important keyword research first and THEN consider the domain.

I trust GoDaddy the most. Seen too many domain names being hung up by failed companies or by mergers.

Give godaddy a go, they're very cheap but there are also many others of a similar price range. Just bear in mind that you get what you pay for, so if you're using shared hosting then you have to be prepared to have occasional downtime where your websites will not be working. Although pretty rare this does happen every few months.

I prefer Namecheap. I used Godaddy for a few years, but eventually transferred them all out. Either one is better than an unknown registrar. Don't host with either of them though. Always keep your domain registration and hosting separate. You don't want one company to have complete control over both domain and hosting.

    Hey Buddy,
With domain name, there are no quality lost anywhere. Simply visit Namecheap or Godaddy.
    BTW, how about hosting?

I think what you need to look for is your overall business. You want to know what registrar and host had passed the test of time.

If that sound cool, I dig bluehost, hostgator or even hostpapa.
Lastly, wish you success in your IM career.

I know its chilling in London now. Im in south east.

Thanks for all the advice and comments too many to multiquote and say thanks, really does go to show that you will actually get help and listeners from a wider audience, if you pull your finger out of your arse and just actually start doing it, not saying it.

Got my domain at namecheap, and I'm arranging hosting with hostgator now

    Thanks again

    No.

.com domains are regsitered by ICANN Accredited Registrars - list at ICANN | ICANN-Accredited Registrars

Reasons to pick one registrar over another
    * Ideally pick one that offers telephone support (as things can/do go wrong)
    * One you can pay in your local ccy - saves any "conversion" issues
    * Provides the services you want (if any) beyond simple registration - whois/id protection for example
    etc
