Replacing Income within a year

So a little background on me. I'm in the military and my enlistment is up in November of this year. I have two websites right now, one is a blog and another is a video tutorial site. I'm slowly building up the second site to become the money maker. I know it will take plenty of work but is it realistic to expect to make $3000 a month within a year?

I know it's hard to say without knowing much but I tend to make money primarily through ebooks and a digital store (royalties). I'm sure I'll include other revenue sources as I go along but my goal is to replace my income (I currently make $3600 a month) by November with the very least needing $1600 a month to make ends meet.

I've already hired a VA who is doing a lot of my web design work and once I feel my current site is where I want it I want to venture into some web apps and maybe some mobile apps as well. Right now I'm saving some money and working on my sites everyday creating content and learning through places like this to get better and better at this stuff. Thoughts? Words of advice? Thanks

The first thing I learnt from this thread is how cheap the military are. $36,000/year? What a joke. Surely that's below the average. The average income in Australia is something like $62,000 per year.

Anyway, that aside, yes it's possible. It really depends how much time and effort you have to dedicate to it as to how fast you will reach those goals. Before you start worrying about web apps or mobile apps, I would first concentrate on getting one thing working and making money for you. The classic mistake most people make is spreading themselves too thin so all they end up with is a bunch of half assed and half finished projects. Just put all your time and effort into getting the one thing working first and then go from there.

What Will said. See if you can get one thing going and build it up a little before you branch out into other areas. And honestly, if it were me I'd take that one thing and rinse and repeat a few times before venturing into something different. For example, if you can get an affiliate site going and scale it up a bit, I'd build another two or three affiliate sites before trying to get into something like making my own product. (And vice versa if you started out with your own product.)

Agreed with Will. It I possible if you put your time and effort into it. Find your niche, master it, and promote promote promote. What also helps is if you narrow down your target market (ex. Military) so you have a common interest with your crowd. My sister was is the navy and they amount that she got paid for all the work she did was rediculous considering that she had her life on the line. Thank you for serving our country

You're in a military and still your technical, that's great! But I just wanted to advise you from an SEO standpoint that it just takes a little time to get the sites up and running. I would rather suggest you focus on building one blog at a time focussing on the 3 largest niches-health,make money or relatonships rather than focus on many websites.Focus on creating an authority blog with 100 articles rather than 100 websites with thin content.

You can easily make 3K/M! A little hard work goes a long way. You might want to start doing wordpress sites so your VA can do content for you. Are you doing affiliate marketing, adsense, selling your own product, or a combo? Good luck 3K should be very doable for you!

Absolutely possible. Really depends on the skills you currently have, or in your case, the skills your VA also has, and how well you work together, and what you invest in to make money.

If you're thinking of throwing up a site, and it making money - unlikely. So long as you're aware that there's a lot more to it than just throwing the site up.

I'd be interested to know how you get on anyway!!

Is your sites making any money today? I mean do you get consistant traffic from the search engines? If so, you're on the right way, if not, you still want to make this your first priority (after great content). Start by building up the site with good unique manually written content and try to get REAL traffic to your site. Do so by making youtube videos, twitter messages and so on... I have also gotten some traffic from fiverr gigs, but it's not a sure thing...

I've done it within a year, but it's not passive income.

I quit my teaching and translation jobs to focus on my copywriting business. Now, I'm making more than I was before and have time to work on the passive income part.

In terms of replacing your income with passive income, it's likely going to take you more than a year (learning + planning + acting). I've been able to get around $1,000 a month passively, but probably won't hit the $3,000 per month point for several more months.

    Good luck to you, though!

Appreciate the advice everyone. Yes the military doesn't pay much and believe it or not I've been in almost 8 years! Right now my sites aren't making money as I have mostly been focusing on building content for them. One is a game design tutorial site and another is a blog in which I share what I've learned in regards to making money online. I have a Youtube channel (see profile) as well where I have about 47 videos since December of last year. That is steadily increasing day by day (100 views a day, 1 subscriber every other day).

I started the blog in July of 2012 when I turned 26, the exact day. I want to document my progress within a year so one of my big goals is to be able to make enough money to leave the military by the time I turn 27. It's a lofty goal but it gives me something to work towards.

I agree I will focus on one thing at a time. My tutorial site will be pretty big and honestly I plan on making it a popular brand that will eventually compete with the big boys. I'm going to start making one small ebook per month essentially just repacking my tutorials into an ebook format and start selling them online. I've written a book before, but it's free online currently because I just didn't feel it was going to make any decent money due to the type of book it was.

As far as my skills go, I work in IT in the military so I could always do some "consulting" on that part. I consider myself fairly computer savvy so I may look into doing something like that if need be. Personally I don't want to work in IT even if there's good money in it, I just want to pursue what I'm currently doing.

I really want to get really good at IM and building businesses online so much so that I wouldn't even consider working for someone else anymore because it would just be ridiculous to do so. I'm still in the learning stages right now, but just wanted to know from others here what they thought. Thanks!

The key is finding a hungry niche and then offering that niche what they are hungry for. Of course you need to be able to prove that you can help them. If you work hard you and hit the right niche, get the timing right you can make a lot more than $3000 a month.

Thanks, I believe I found a good niche. It's pretty specific but I believe my niche is enough to make a pretty good income then eventually I can expand from there. I personally got involved with this niche because I personally got tired of not being able to find good quality content for learning this stuff and after many months finally decided to do it myself.

As others in this thread have already stated you need to focus on only one method at a time and make that one method successful before venturing into other areas. It is possible to make $3,000 per month online if you work hard enough, smart enough, and follow through on your goals.
