First and foremost, don't be mislead by the thread title. Creating a logical, actionable plan is hugely important to the success of your business.

However planning, tweaking, planning again, more tweaking, more planning (the cycle continues) will get you nowhere.

Let me expand...

I recently met up with an ex colleague of mine who I worked with in 2010. Prior to me leaving the company where we both worked (and the colleague still works today) he had made some great plans for his assault on the Internet Marketing arena in late 2010.

This is a guy who knows his stuff. He delivers SEO seminars to online businesses that go down like a storm time and time again.

I met up with him for an update and low and behold, he is no further in his IM journey than he was in 2010....

But he had some 'fresh plans' for me to cast my eyes over.

I had a feeling of deja vu...

His mistake is that he is seeking perfection.

I've seen guys become millionaires in this marketplace because they take action and go with their gut. Many are far from perfect.

Rarely will you create plans that you are 100% happy with. Entrepreneurship is about taking chances. So if you create plans that you are 90% with, go with your gut and take action.

If you're waiting for perfect plans - it's highly likely that your business will never get off the ground.

Take logical action and succeed!

    Agree with this completely. In this business, even a bad plan put into action is better than the best plan left to gather dust.

      Good advice.

      But nothing wrong with planning indeed, I would say it was essential for any project providing the good old S.M.A.R.T. mnemonicis is used.

      The first four are important (Specific, Measureable, Achievable or Attainable and Realistic), but it is the fifth area where a lot of good plans can bite the dust. T is for Time. What are the TIME constraints for the plan i.e when does the plan begin and end? When does ACTION need to be taken to have the plan succeed?

      It works for me ...................

    Hey 4dayweekend,

    Thanks for this, I know this to be true but still I find myself guilty of planning things too much! I guess I just love planning and have got paid a couple of times to help others plan out their businesses. However everytime I have just gone for it with a rough plan I have had the best success!

    Yes plan things out but start putting them into action straight away! Get some of the tasks ticked off on day one to give yourself some momentum!

    Of course you have to know that the action you are taking will pay of, but in my experience you NEVER know! Not for sure, not 100% - also you have to put in 100% effort rather than "I will just give this a go..."

    People looking to "just give it a go..." rarely win the race!

    and being a perfectionist, has been one of the greatest mistakes I have made in my life. I would have gone much farther indeed. Whenever I took action, EVEN though I failed, I always felt good about it. Always thought 'hey, what the hell, I took a shot.'. Because that's all anyone can do, taking a shot. I am not a subscriber of all that crap that says 'anything is possible', that's just moronic. But you are spot on about taking chances. Especially if the risks aren't truly great. Unless you are risking your income or your health, then yes, take risks. And if you are young, get used to this as much as possible.

    i totally agree and couldnt have said it any better myself. I personally have experienced this myself and is the reason why I wasted so many years. Now I teach what not to do to my students.

    Thank you for this inspiring post, I have a lot of plan in my mind, and I keep focusing one one idea all the time. Thinking about it with my BF, with my mom, with my friend, in my work place, etc. But I never take any action, because I need to make my plan perfect. Maybe because I am afraid to fail, but deep inside, I am just a perfectionist freak and I need to change this part of me ASAP.

    I used to think that all you need is action, don't need a plan. I was wrong. We needed a plan to guide our action. But we don't need to have a perfect plan. There is no perfect plan, as all plans will require adjustments as you go along.

    Agree, and two lines I pump into my own clients are these:

    1) Perfection Is Your Enemy
    2) Good Enough Is Good Enough


    As mentioned, you need a plan - there is no point in flailing around 'trying' things, just to try them. Have a plan, and execute that plan. Mistakes will happen, nothing will be perfect, and good enough is good enough!

      Excellent two points.

      I think it's important to realise that there is no such thing as perfect. So those seeking perfection are on an endless journey and for many, that endless journey is a barrier to entry from launching what could be a hugely profitable business.

      A good plan executed is better than a virtuoso plan that never materialises.

        In some ways I can empathise with your colleague. I used to be like that too but then I decided to just 'get something out there'. I didn't see much success initially but now things are coming together and I am seeing results.

        On the other hand if this guy is 'talking the talk' about SEO to all these businesses then he is a right tool if he isn't 'walking the walk' and cashing in on his knowledge.

        The next step for me is to scale it up by outsourcing. Great thing is that now I am pulling in enough regular income to make this a possibility. I can see the day when I can do IM full time and won't have to bother with doing boring stuff like seo seminars

    Great solid post. This is a thread that many people need to see. Not to just read it, but to fully understand it. Once you begin taking action, you will begin to find more success. Planning is great, but it's the execution of those ideas which separates the successful from the unsuccessful. The Action Takers are the ones who usually wind up making all of the money. Solid post.

    It is kind of like the Right Brothers when they were launching their first airplanes into the air. Sure they had some failures, but they kept on trying until they finally succeeded.

    Sure they had plans, probably lots of them, but with those plans came action on each of them. They acted on the plans tht they had until they finally got a working prototype airplain that they could be proud of.

    This is why being a perfectionist really doesn't work in this business because if you're trying to be perfect, like was mentioned in the post above, your business will never get off the ground and fly. Action is the key to success because without it, there is no success of any kind whatsoever.
