Please advice me - Mass to Niche

Hi mates,

I have a website (example : abcstore.com) that is about Gifts for men, and I am promoting amazon products on it. But it is really really hard to get sales as far as "Gifts for men" is a pretty mass topic to cover up. I would say, I had got about less than US$10 sales over a year via that site.

I had noticed that many guys are saying that to target niche market, like products only. For example : Laptops, Micro oven, Coffee makers or etc. I am sure that is worth to have it, because the conversion rate may be high specially from Google traffic.

Now my question is, If I decided to get go for only one product and promote using same site called (example) abcstore.com. Will it be harder in terms of promoting? (Reason is, already I have many backlinks pointing to the site using gifts for men related keywords)

I know, I can go for new domain and promote it, it will be easier, but I love my old domain and I don't like to give it up without earning any sales using that domain

Any advice?

It's usually better to "niche down" as far as possible until you can really own that niche.

i.e. Gifts > Gifts For Men > Gifts For Young Men > Gifts For Young, Male College Students > Gifts For Young, Male College Students Far From Home...etc.

There's no way you can be the "authority" for Gifts...and probably not for Gifts For Men either. But...you COULD be the authority on buying gifts for young men in college and away from home! :-)

Just as a thought...a theme of "Gifts For Men You Don't Know Well" might be kinda fun and interesting enough to grab attention. (Your purple cow) It always sucks to buy gifts for people you don't know very well...what will they like? How do I know they'll like it? You could play with that theme on the site and offer "cool" gifts for guys...

    Hi

You don't need to "niche down" or change your domain, but you also don't need to target every device available for men.

You are talking about an Amazon/affiliate site so I would look for products aimed at men and start posting reviews about them. You can start with one or two catagories and add more as your site grows.

Look for new and upcoming products. Look for products with lots of models and designs. Look for things men search for on the Internet.

You can have categories like: Style, Sports, Gear, Tools, Luxury, Travel

Then just post a selection of products you want to target.

For sports you could look for latest golf equipment, new off-trail bikes, camping gear, tents, etc.

For example look up a great new camping tent and write a review about it. You don't have to have hundreds of reviews of tents, maye one or two articles about specific models in your "outdoor" category.

Then review a few of the latest bikes for triathletes coming this spring.

Review a new electric shaver. Men's watches is a good category.

A few Amazon Warriors like Gaz and Wolfmiii recommend 'brandable' domains in large niches and then target specific low competition products and new products in that space.

It sounds like you have a good start for something like this and just need to find products and content for your site.

As the site and content grows your categories will fill out.

You could also look for weird and unusual gifts to feature on the site.

I would use social media to drive traffic- Pinterest, facebook, twitter, YouTube - and use pictures and curiosity to drive traffic.

Much like the web site 'This is why I'm broke': ThisIsWhyImBroke.com :: The Internet's Mall

That site is not targeted to a niche and does not have organized categories.

But it gets a TON of traffic because it socializes the pictures and the "uniqueness" of some of the products it promotes.

Here are some good examples in the 'men's stuff' niche:

Gadgets and Gifts for Men | inStash

werd.com | Men's Gear, Gadgets For Guys | Gift Guide For Men

Mahlon, that is great advice, thanks for that.

So, It is better to have "gifts for dad","Gifts for bf" and etc, as well as a store with products categorized like Style, Sports, Gear, Tools, Luxury, Travel related gifts...and under each category, target individual products and brands... isn't?

I am sure, it is going to take time to find such products, let me start slowly...

I would rather opt for a completely different, more long-term strategy. Pick a niche you are passionate about & with good potential for monetisation. Create a fanbase (with a blog, Facebook...) - create a good relationship with your audience - build a list - provide them with excellent & useful information - every now and then, promote a high quality affiliate product to your list - create your own product offering - over time, build a great backend sales funnel.

Become better and better at what you are doing, help your audience as much as you can... everything else falls in place.

Micro niche and sniper sites worked very well in the past, but it's getting tougher and tougher - build a proper business.
