New software and lack of promotion

Hello, this is my first post.

I was reading topics from time to time on Warrior Forum, especially regarding various promotion techniques.

I'm a programmer in Exeone, worked on System Navigator file manager application for the last 7 years.
Last year we launched 1st release, we had certain amount of users but general marketing was awful.

We mostly focused on download sites but I think that submitting PADs is nothing more then waste of time. Even at popular sites such as download.com etc. Cause if you don't give someone purpose to download/use your program he won't even bother to detect it with the blink of the eye.

That is why we thought that the next step should be writing press articles.

I would like to hear more about people experience on this issue.

We would like campaign over prweb.com etc.

Is this a clever method.

We spent 7 years to develop this file manager. It's not modest to say that it's a best file manager ever but it is. People just need to hear about it, like they heard for some Lady Duck and didn't hear for some real artists.
