Hey Warriors,

I'm going to tell you some methods to get more opt-ins to your e-mail lists, you may already know some or all of these, but I'm sure it will help out some list builders here!

1.) Forums

You can make free giveaways or contests and advertise it in your signature (or in a thread in some cases).

2.) Free Bonus

You can ask other marketers to redirect their buyers to your page after they purchase something so you offer something for free, people will opt-in to download the "bonus". It will provide high quality (buyer) opt-ins.

3.) "Ask the Expert"

You can create a form where people can ask questions related to your niche, they will receive answers to their e-mails. Every question will be an opt-in.

4.) Solo Ads

This is one of the most effective ways to build your list fast, but it needs budget. You can reduce the advertising costs by offering a OTO to your subscribers.

5.) Swaps

You can exchange clicks with other list builders.

6.) Youtube

You can create videos related to your niche, offer freebies and tell them to visit your page.

That's all for now, I hope it helped! If you know other good methods (free/paid) don't forget to share below!

  • Thanks for sharing your tips,

It is important to stick with just one method until you master it and then jump on the next one

    • Thanks for the tips...I was studying this topic again. I see where two items on your list seem to be everybody's favorite methods. Solo ads and swaps. But I differ when I say that instead of mastering one and then moving on, take a minute to try both and see which works best for you, and then plan the rest of your strategy around your results.

  • Thanks nice post I personally use solo ads to build list & even YouTube to gain opt ins.
  • Thanks for sharing these list-building fundamentals. As an indie publisher/fiction author, I'm always looking to stay focused and make the most of my time when I'm marketing. And few things are more important than your list
  • You forgot Socialmedia marketing like Facebook, Twitter etc...

  • On Twitter, I often start a dialogue with people that post the message "I need a job" and some others but that phrase.... it gets tweeted so often.

    My response?

"You need money...no one needs a job" which usually gets an LOL and a retweet.

Generally they look at my sig and I get whatever the offer the flavor of the day is in my sig from there.

    Hope that was helpful.

    Regards

  • I like to go with solo ads
  • Thanks for the tips !

I also get results with classified ads, both free and paid, online and offline. Banner ads, social media sites and even Yahoo answers will work too.
  • JV Giveaways missing, and also PPC and PPV traffic.
  • Hi,

I have seen a lot of people talk about different strategies, one of which I haven't yet had a go at is solo ads.

Morphius I see you prefer solo ads, I would love to get your input if you have built your list through solo ads.

    I have some questions:

How do you know the quality of someone's list? I have seen a LOT of people advertising solo ads and I just don't know how to judge the quality of a list, you see some people offer 1,000 clicks for $70 and others 1000 clicks for $300.

Now thats a large different in cost per click, however we all know that it is not about the number of clicks, it is about the number of leads added to your list and then after that the number of paying customers.

So how do you judge whether a solo ad provider has a good list or a not so good list?

I am not expecting to find the "perfect" solo ad provider, I simply want to be aware of what I am facing, from reading a LOT of different posts I think this is a good way to go.

I really appreciate any/all of your input!

    Thanks

  • Great advice! I'll def work on it
  • Don't forget a Free WSO does very well for the money as well.
  • Solo ads are probably your best bet not all in niches. Not all niches use these advertising practices while other newsletter owners may charge higher minimum fees. In mmo/biz opp prices are way more reasonable. But I think Once you have a great responsive email list you can use your email to help jump start social signals for you.

For example you do some kind of pre launch to whatever and you send them to a page and have a viral social button as the only call to action....especially if you have great content on the page to help entice the share. Once they share that button on their profile (for example a tweet) It should share a link where brand new people can optin to your list and also grow through your pre launch sequence. Also if you did on site seo optimization all you have to do is keep sending people to that page to get more social signals to help with natural serp ranking for more potential traffic.

Nothing is a guarantee. Always test!
  • Solo Ads are great previously.
Nowadays, the results/conversions are dropping tremendously.

You need to have a high-converting squeeze page to perform well.

Some of my best lists are actually from more traditional methods such as
    1. article marketing,
    2. Forum Marketing
    3. Guest Blogging
    4. JV Giveaways.

Though the list is relatively small compared to my solo ad lists, the sales conversion is much higher.

I strongly suggest that you segmented your lists into various traffic sources.
There are so many poor-converting solo ads vendors in the market.
These guys simply whack their lists with offers/solos/ swaps.

Always buy solo ads with small quantity..
Only scale up when the conversion is good.

Don't forget about providing your list with great content.
This does not mean free offers from Ad Swaps..
    Real good Content!!
  • nice tips.
But I think solo ads require substantial capital for a newbie.
  • Thanks for the share man. Good thread. This will really be helpful to a lot of marketers.
  • It is better if you know which solo ads that can provide you with many unique click. some people are also using paid traffic rather than solo ads because there are some paid traffic that can give you a lot of unique traffic better than solo ads. You can also trying to put more effort on the sales copy ads, maybe even hire a copywriter if you have just made a big profit from one of your campaign.
  • Thank you very much for the helpful information.
  • I like the 'Ask the expert' idea. Seems a good way to get interactive traffic that is more responsive.
  • I would like to add one more.

    7) Social networks:

I am experimenting with pinterest now, and the traffic potential of sites like pinterest is astonishing. Granted, users in those sites are not really in a buying mood, but they have absolutely no problem giving out their email address for a relevant freebie. So, social networks can be a great source of traffic for list building.
  • Here's another tip that I use regularly.

    8. Surveys

You can create short survey's to get people to respond to you and then have them opt in to get the results. I use this frequently on LinkedIn groups and Facebook. For example, I post something like this...

Take the 2013 XXX Salary Survey and Find Out How Your Salary Compares

Where XXX is whatever Niche employment industry, For example, Accounting, Civil Engineering, or whatever...

I then take them to a brief salary survey, they complete it and then get directed to a squeeze page that asks them to opt in so that I can send them the results. Once they optin I take them to a OTO product. BOOM! They're now on my list, in my sales funnel and potentially just bought something. ALL because of a free post about a salary survey.
  • Great idea's here, don't forget FB ads!
  • Thanks for sharing typoo999 and others for their additions. I am currently building in the IM niche and my key way of doing this is through hosting a JVGiveaway (still looking for contributors if anyone is interested ).

One question I have for everyone with regards to list building... This thread has 8 maybe 9 different techniques for list building, do people find the quality of the traffic or subscribers varies with these methods? Is any one method better for the number of subscribers or buyers it provides?
  • Getting my fee wet with Facebook. its always interesting to learn when you didn't know what you didn't know.
  • Great thread for list building.
Thanks for sharing those very useful tips.

My best tool is: Solo Ads.
  • you got all the answers, now just scoop them into your funnel!
  • Great tips! But I want to know about something which won't require any initial capital. Is it possible to build a list with SEO?

    • You can write an article on your blog (if you have one) about a specific topic on your niche, like giving tips and then offer a full report -stick an optin form for that. Make sure your blog is searchable with relevant keywords, and all the usual SEO optimised strategies on you blog or website.
    • It is possible Rituraj, but it takes time. A quicker way is to buy some cheap solo's (you can get 50 clicks for as little as $20 and sometime less) to build a seed list. And then start doing swaps. I've been doing this very successfully using the safeswaps website.

    Thanks for sharing.
  • Thanks for posting the tips...building a list is not hard; just do the fundamentals consistently. K.I.S.S
  • Ya stick with 1 or 2 of these strategies and get really good at them and you will be passively building a list in no time.
  • JV Giveaways can be effective too if done right...
  • It is easy to build a list through forum marketing. However, the key is; is that you continually do it which means a lot of work for you to do, but isn't that what marketing online is all about anyway?

If you're afraid of good hard work, then you don't need to run an online business plain and simple. As was show above, there are many ways that you can build a list, but I am going to offer a few more here.

for starters, you can write a free e-book and give it away, and then engourage other people such as those on your list to give the book away and so on. Just make sure that you place a link to your squeeze page inside the book so that new subscribers can opt in and get the product that you're offering.

Write and submit articles with links to your squeeze pages, that's a number 1 way to build y our list and then there are social bookmarking sites too that you can use.

And, here's another that not too many people realize that can help you to build a list and that is to use Yahoo Answers. Simply provide an answer to a question that somebody has and make sure that you ahve a link back to your squeeze page.
  • Free giveaways for optins, swaps and making a video related to my niche,
these are the best that always work for me
  • Dear, thanks for your sharing, I personally care about building list using Social Network. What the best strategies that you think work well? And which is better, Facebook, Twitter or Linkdle? Thanks.
  • And one more point I want to ask is that how to drive traffic to the opt-in form (since the website hasn't been quite well-known) - So, we have to apply SEO or run PPC program before collecting subscribers? Thanks for every answers.
  • Hey great post typoo! Short, to the point and provides lots of value. And that's great because it covers what I now know to be the number one most important thing to do in IM and that is to build a list.

I've personally been doing swaps and am getting great results with safeswaps. I'm discovering there's more to it than just simple swapping though. You still need to give the subscriber as much value as possible or they'll become immune.

But it's definitely working for me and I recommend it highly to others here on the forum. All you need is a squeeze page, and an auto-responder and you're good to go. It's an excellent way to build your list on a budget.
  • Nice information on building a list. I would also add facebook ads as a way to drive traffic and build a list.
