What Do You Do In The Event That Great Content Isn't Producing Results?

If you are posting great content on social media or your blog/website and it's still not attracting any traffic/sign ups or sales do you become discouraged and say "screw these people I'm not wasting anymore time." or find a way to improve on what's wrong to hopefully bring in results?

Honestly, most people are targeting the wrong audience.

Step one: Figure out who your real target audience should be.
Step two: Create great content for the right market.

Have to agree with TPW here, you may be creating fantastic content, but if you don't understand who your ideal customer could be, it may just be mistargeted. Take some time to think about who you are aiming your messages at, and start up some meaningful conversations with potential customers, ask them what their biggest challenges are in the market / niche you're targeting, get real feedback from people first on exactly what they want, and adjust your content to their responses.

You'll be surprised how off the mark you can be when you don't have a conversation with your market and listen to the feeedback...

    No.

I'd say "screw social media and the idea of just posting outstanding content on my own blog/site only and hoping people will somehow find it there". It comes really easily to me to say that, too, because I've never thought that either of these approaches would bring me any traffic anyway. (Which is why I don't use them).

If you have great content, you need to get it published in front of the people who are already looking (and not through a search engine!) for whatever it is you're writing about. It isn't about how much content you have. It's about where you get it published. Great content does produce results (but it won't help you much just sitting on your own site or, typically, through social media - that isn't really "targeting", for the most part).

You're assuming everything is closely related and it's not.

You need to go out and find the right people and bring them to your site.

You need to make sure you're writing the content they want.

You need to optimize your opt-in forms.

    The real question is...

How long have you been publishing content?

    There's a big difference between..

"I've been doing this now for 2 years and nothing", as opposed to ...

"I've been doing this for a week, and nothing"

It depends on a variety of factors. How many visitors are you getting? What's the product? What's the funnel?

If you are getting any of those factors right, then you can generally tinker with the others to make it work. For example, nobody should give up on a site that is getting 800 visitors a day, nor on a sales page that gets a 2% conversion with little traffic.

There's never anything to lose from great content, though. It will bring you visitors in the long run. Even if you want to give up on angle, you should be able to monetise them a little, and that would be enough to fetch a decent fee at Flippa.
