Legality of embedding a Youtube Video

Hi Folks

I'm in the planning stages right now to put together an authority site. I was looking in Youtube and it just so happens that there is a video (not mine) made by someone giving a glowing testimonial to a product that I'm looking to promote.

Is it OK to embed that video as another form of testimonial on my site? I will be using snippets of text testimonials from other users but thought video might add to increase the conversion rate.

I guess the downside is if the video gets pulled, then I'll have a dead link.

Thanks in advance

As long as the 'embed' code is enabled, you can use it. Some videos disengage the embedding feature though.

The author of the video relinquishes all rights to YouTube once they upload it. YouTube in turn not only allows you to embed any video on your website, they encourage you to do so by providing the exact embedding code.

Unless they have disabled embedding, then you are fine. That's the reason most people post on YouTube anyway, they hope it will go viral.

Just make sure there isn't some sort of "leak" from the video. If the person in the video is trying to lead visitors to his website or another website, it could cost you sales and send your traffic away from you.

Yep, what they said. If the video's owner allows embedding, you can embed it. I agree with Minisite Nerd that you'd need to make sure there wasn't some kind of leak that would send your potential buyers to their site instead.

You could just create your own video, and hope that people use yours around the web promoting that product instead

Jenn is right. You may be best off with your own video if you can make one - not hard.

That way you might even get some traffic from YouTube and/or search engines. Plus all the views that you drive to it from your website will start to add up and that will help you rank higher in YouTube search results.

Yeah, the whole reason people put up videos is to have others watch them. If an embed code is available, you can post it to your site.
