Are you treating Internet Marketing like a Business or just a Hobby?

The people who become successful online are the people who treat Internet Marketing exactly like a business (which it is.)

The people who generally fail online are the ones who try one method, and then next week you catch them trying a completely new method.

They suffer from what I call "Shiny Object Syndrome"

Their stuck looking for the next magic pill, trying to "Get Rich Quick"

Of course they never end up getting rich, only ending up more broker.

The key to success online is to stay focused and to only follow tried and true methods that have stood the test of time.

The point is,

Treat Internet Marketing like a business and it will pay you like a Business.

Treat Internet Marketing like a hobby and it will pay you like a Hobby.

That was nice advice on how to succeed in the IM field.
I was already earning money when everything went south as I treated things lightly and got sidetracked by other things.

I am currently refocusing all of my thoughts and efforts to regain the past glory.
Just like what was said, "Treating IM just like how you would treat a business".

    Thanks for the share.

You welcolm. Honestly speaking, succeeding online comes down to the simple things such as staying focused, building a list, and taking action.

Like a lot of things, it's the 20% that gives you 80% of your results.

"Shiny object" syndrome soon disappears when you've got to get food on the table before the kids come home from school. What needs to be done becomes glaringly and urgently obvious.

Think like that and you'll find reserves of creativity and resourcefulness that you never knew you had.

    Cheers,

    Yes, you are right...

The biggest problem I see is people are not willing to spend money for this real business, I consider this uncceptable:

    1. Only spend $3 - for a business logo
    2. Buy their websites for 100-200 bucks
    3. Get the cheapest hosting plan they can find
    4. To lazy to learn or pay someone to help set up a real email address i.e. contact@website.com instead of using gmail, hotmail or yahoo

So they are ending up spending approximately 300 bucks on a "business" and maybe 1000 more on "the next IM product" and wonder why I am not making any money.

You can't expect to invest a few hundred bucks and call it a business. Of course some people can get lucky but the reality its that not everyone is that lucky.

Yes, so very true. Many newbies are way too afraid to invest in their business because they don't quite understand one basic fact:

It takes money to make money.

Here's a fact: Most offline businesses do not become profitable until after 2 years, and yet many newbies and beginners are not able to wait for a few weeks or even months to become profitable.

It's been proven time an again.

Get Rich Quick schemes DO NOT WORK (in the long run).

It's always better to focus your attention and efforts on building a Real solid business that will last you for the long haul.

I'd go a step further and say treat IM like you're in the military battlefield, or, like you're in the mafia.

Be "dead serious" as if your life depend on it.

Robert Greene mentioned a chapter in the original freakonomics edition in which "the drug game mirrors business", and, you have to approach it as such.

Ex. You have all kinds of people who will come to you with schemes and dreams( think ads trying to sell you stuff). People who are out to scam you, time wasters, tire kickers, and, haters that will sabatoge your business by setting you up.

Yes business is brutal and people will use spy tactics to try to squeeze info about your business. Beware of freely talking too much, or, someone will steal your niche.

Use the art of disinformation & say things that throw people off in threads so they dont think too much of you.

Keep competition & future competitors off balance. When you get to work work with a zen like focus because your life is on the line in the battlefield.

Now that I wrote this time to take my own advice....

    Maybe

I treat it like a business.

If you gonna treat it like a hobby, you tend to have the same mindset as most people out there. Making little or no money at all.

But more importantly you got to give value to people.

Let's face the cold hard truth. We all have aspirations, dreams and goals but if we cannot translate those into value for people to invest their time and money, we are not going to make any money or the amount we wanted to really change our lives.

Also considering the fact that understanding and applying he basics and fundamentals take time, you got to treat it like a business rather than get rich quick action plan.

So true. Offering value is extremely important if you want to make money online. In fact I'd venture to say that you will NOT make money unless you offer value to the people you do business with.

A business. And not too many business make a killing right off the bat. They do require time, attention, and financial investments. That's my attitude, and being humble enough to realize when I've made a misstep along the way.

One should definitely treat IM as a proper business because that is what it actually is! Those who treat it as a hobby almost never make it "long-term" wise. But it also comes down to the fact that most "newbies" don't make it because they don't really understand it or take the time to research and find out exactly how it works but instead they always checking out the next best thing and eventually just end up with information overload. If theres one thing I learnt in this industry is that you should treat an online business the exaxt same way you would an offline business.....

Actually many people have made a great deal of money with minimum investment. I am not saying this is the norm, but it certainly does happen. Just because some people can find things for a bargain and get a site up and running for less than $50 does not mean they can't turn it into a profitable business.

That's the great thing about an online business, if you have the knowledge and the network of skilled individuals you can get things done fairly cheap.

It all comes down to skilset you have and what you are an expert in. It is like asking advice from two people with two different expertise. One will tell you how you can be a shoestring king, while the other cant even comprehend how to make money without having an investment to make money.

I agree with this. It is certainly possible to make money online without investing a great deal of money. To be honest, the only basics that every internet marketer must have is hosting, a domain name, and an autoresponder. If you have those, you'll be in good shape.

Actually, when I first started I always said to myself it was just a hobby, spending a lot of money in a lot of programs, jumping from one thing to the next and actually not making any progress. I then decided to treat it like a business, got a mentor and things started to get better, and now is my primary income. So yeah TREAT IT LIKE A BUSINESS!

People have made businesses out of their hobbies and that is fine. Doing what you love and making a living at it. Then you will never "work" another day in your life. You do have to be serious about it just like you would any other job or career. I so enjoy the people I get to know being in IM. So many great minds and great advice/knowledge.

    Thanks to everyone.
