Is there a business here somewhere?

Guys I love music and all my friends and even people who meet me, they are really impressed that I'm so good when it comes to finding good music.

I wanted to know if there is a business here or what platform should I use to help people find good music.

If I can do this with my friends, I'm sure I can do it for other people as well.

What do you suggest?

Try to sell it on fiverr. If you find a hungry market on there, you'll have your answer.

People love lists. So why not try a top 10 gimmick?

A website that has top 10 lists for a multitude of musical sub-genres, a list for music to study to, to exercise to etc. You wouldn't just embed a YouTube video of a particular song, but explain in a few paragraphs exactly why it stands out from the crowd.

Could turn into a proper authority site with, eventually, the chance to create spin-off books for Kindle or something.

ElGuapo and rocket2uranus thanks for your reply. Both are great ideas and yes the top 10 songs really got me thinking. I'm a fairly social person so I won't mind doing youtube videos as well. The whole copyright issue (I believe I can have 30 second samples) is what's holding me back kinda. Thanks for your input anyways. Cheers! JB

I'm not sure what you mean by helping people find good music.

Is it really something people would be willing to pay for?

How would you monetize it and turn it into a business?

Im with Will on this, I am not really understanding what you are actually asking for... There are plenty of good people who can find good songs online or are you good at finding undiscovered talent?

Yeah, i don't see "finding good music" as a talent you can make money from...

dammit lol Well I guess what I meant was helping people discover good music. Like sometimes I go to a friends house or at a social gathering and when I help them find a song they usually "Oh wow, I never heard that one' and it doesn't necessarily have to be a new song either.

The thing is everyone has different taste. So your top 10 list would only be for you. It's not likely that many people will enjoy the same music as you. If the song is popular enough, then it will be on the billboard top 100.

Maybe start a blog. Feature 3-5 songs a day and talk about their meaning or message??? Set up an amazon affiliate account and put links to the digital downloads or CD's. Other than that, I don't really see much demand for helping people find good music.

    Good luck

I really dont see how you can actually make a living out of this. Everyone has different taste and preferences when it comes to music so your top 10 or top 20 may not cater to everyone.

The only way I have ever made money from musicians is by helping upcoming musicians get a online presence through little mini sites and managing the websites every month for a small fee.

Thanks for your reply everyone. Just trying to monetize my passion for music somehow. Hmmm but I have to say HarrieB, you really got me scratching my noggin here . . . this just might work out. Cheers all! HAPPY EASTER! JB

jbthemummy, hang on. You can monetize telling people about music you like. Want proof people are looking for this very thing? There are Billboard 100's and Top 40's and other such lists/sites.

    Plus, a little story...

A long, long time ago on a blog not so far away - it was MY blog, and now and again, I made a post about what I was listening to on either the radio or in my Napster playlist. Come to think of it, "What's in the Playlist" was the title I used for most of the posts.

In this post, I would list the title of the song I was listening to, the band or person who sang it, and then I'd give a little blurb about why I liked the song or how it made me feel when I listened to it. Sometimes, the "how it makes me feel" would be the reason I listened in the first place.

Ever get bogged down in life, and just need a pick-me-up? Some people turn to drugs. I turn to music that affects me as a pick-me-up. And on my blog, in these playlist posts, I told people about it.

Those posts were some of the most accessed/most viewed posts on my blog. People want to know what you like, what you're listening to, and why. They will visit to see if you are like them, in musical taste.

So, how to monetize? Use AdWords ads. Let others pay you to list related ads on your post. Doesn't even have to be music-related. The ad can be "feel" related. For example: "This song makes me feel free to be myself." You could place an ad for a product about self-confidence building. <shrug>

Others may not agree with me, but I know from experience people will visit, and people will pay you to put their products in front of eyeballs.

    Hope this helps,
    Tina
