Best way to manage 12k+ list

So I run an online community and am on almost 12k members with no paid advertising. All signups are stored in my mysql database.

I want to start a monthly newsletter and was wondering what people thought the best way to do this would? And if it used another company, would the email addresses be passed over on every sign up?

Thanks!

It's completely custom, I wrote it myself.

Well, I was wondering if it was vbulletin as I know they recently integrated a mailing system (iContact I believe) but dont quote me might be another one. So in short not sure, but I'm sure someone here will help you.

Im guessing the best way would be to run an email list on your own server. Or just interact with them on the forum and ask them to sign up to your list, (something like aweber) . Add a sign up link, maybe a drop down bar from the top to grab there attention and hopefully after a while the majority of the old members will sign up. Offer them something free to sign up.

Again I'm sure someone here can help more than I can, but this is just what came to me at this point .

    Good luck

ps; good job on creating your own forums software. Im sure that took a lot of time and effort. Do you have a link to your site ?

Thanks, just PMd you. Unfortunately a large junk of the 12k aren't active so I can't ask them to sign up to a newsletter.

Better you use an autoresponder like Email Marketing Software & Email Marketing Services from AWeber or Email Marketing Software & Autoresponder from GetResponse because that's the way to manage email marketing.

I would suggest getting an Aweber autoresponder account and emailing your subscribers helping tips every week and promoting the occasional product every now and then.
