To Invest or to Not Invest In Coaching..

So just got off a call with a personal IM coach who has an excellent track record, has helps tons of people reach their financial goals, and has a three month coaching program that he offers for right around $3000.00.

For those of you who have sought out a coach/mentor such as this who provides actual one on one help and only works with a few students, can you give me some insight as to if it is worth the financial investment, if you feel like you could have figured most stuff out on your own, or if you feel like it's the best money you've ever spent and can't imagine being where you are now without the help of your mentor...

I've gone through this before with another person. Similar experience. They both kind of asked me questions about me and what my goals are, talked about why a lot of internet marketers fail, and then gave a bit of a pitch about why their service will circumvent those problems.

The difference between the two is the first coach I worked with did not have any real system for me to follow. She basically just reviewed my work and made minor changes. She ultimately didn't really help me that much other than to be an accountability partner.

This person I just talked to actually has a system to follow.

I feel like I could benefit greatly from this, however, it's a huge investment and I don't know what I should do.

Anybody who's had personal coaches/mentors in the past, please respond. I'd love to hear your input.

Thanks guys!!

That certainly is a lot of money. I don't teach IM, but I do teach how to safely source small or large quantities direct from factories at factory prices, and how to import them without learning all the rules and regulations.

For someone wanting to sell physical products the $50 investment could save them thousands, but many people baulk at spending $50 for a lifetime's experience plus ongoing support. Maybe I should charge $3,000.

I must say I would never spend $3,000 unless I had absolute proof that the person has helped others succeed and has a real system to follow.

To be honest with you, if you interact with the warriors here for a good month on warrior forum, you will get some amazing knowledge out of here. I never had a coach until I became well familiar with the warriors here. My coach worked with me for FREE and we also started a joint venture together that made us some good money.
I say $3000 is way too steep.

$3000 sounds fairly expensive but I've seen pricier.

    Definitely check the coaches credentials.

Are you fairly experienced already? If not, make sure to sift around the forums for a few months first.

Compared to the income potential, $3,000 is a drop in the bucket.

The fact that the prospective coach has a system is a big plus.

But here's the most important question: will you implement?

Be honest with yourself. Think back to your past efforts and your current motivation level. Will you persist when the inevitable bumps in the road occur?

I think the answer lies with you actually. If you have had a coach that was an accountability partner and that didn't do the trick, you've been reading through the forum and that didn't do the trick, then you are faced with a circumstance in which you need someone to walk you through a system and MAKE you accountable.

I think the next question - if you can be successful with this coaching system (and it could be the best one for you right now) - then will you continue after the coach no longer makes you accountable?

If your hold up is that you don't want to try anything for fear that you might be doing the wrong thing, then coaching could be just what the doctor ordered.

If you can afford the coaching and the coach has great testimonials and you know the marketing strategies he/she is using are the ones you want to learn - what is holding you up?

Very well said, you touched on everything I was thinking.

I paid 3K for a 4 week coaching program that was very exclusive and it's paying off very well. This was not your typical IM product and I there was a interview process and accountability on both ends..

Unless you have had some prior results with a coach through a product or recommendation then you might want to think twice before forking over your cash.

$3,000 is a lot of money if it is not cleared what is being offered. It does depend on their track record and I would want to speak with some others that have gone through the program as well (although this does not mean they are not paid to give a good referral.)

People do have the misconception that coaching should not cost anything or not be expesive. When you go to the gym, you usually sign a contract with a fitness coach if you are looking for personal training. Do you search for one that is the cheapest but does not give good results, or find someone that is decently priced and can get you the results you are after.

Same way for sports. If you are looking for someone to teach you basketball, would you want someone like Michael Jordan or someone that can barely dribble the ball?

I would do my research and really decide if their system and leadership align with what you are trying to accompish overall. If you do your part and take action on their system, will they offer you a guarantee? So, yes $3000 is a lot of money for most people, but you need to know what you are getting in return if you decide to go that route.

$3000 is a good bit of money, but, if if you learn to make 5K a month (or more), how worth it would that be ?

It depends on how serious you are about your business, the situation you are currently in, and the conversation you have with the potential coach.

If you're looking to make an extra 1-3K a month, you can probably struggle through and over time (probably considerable time) make that kind of money. However, if you want to build a real business that is stable, that is professional, and that can earn you upwards of 10K-25K per month then coach is absolutely the way to go.

Say what you want, but internet marketing is NOT easy. Like anything, there are the exceptions... but in general, it is not easy. While I have no idea of the coach, I can tell you that in general "you get what you pay for" and purchasing a $12 WSO (or a whole boatload of them... even mine), will not by themselves get you to the level of making serious money.

Have a long conversation with the prospective coach, make sure they understand your goals and you understand their promises, coaching style, time frame, etc.

If you can do it, get a coach.

It's definitely a good idea to learn as much as possible from other people. However, the real question you should be asking yourself is: will you make more than what you invested using this system that you talk about?

Have others already achieved success following his method? How many others have failed? You should really dig deeper into the coaching offer and there's only one person who can decide: YOU.

The type of coaching this guys is offering is pretty exclusive from what he explained. He doesn't have a huge sales page for his coaching. He works only with a few students at a time and provides personal access to him through email on a daily basis along with two coaching calls per week.

He also offers video modules that explain the process he does from start to finish. Starting with finding potential markets, testing and tracking a traffic source and surveying the traffic, then creating a front end product plus upsells and potentially a membership program people have the option of subscribing to.

He then will help me create and optimize a proper sales funnel, then walks me through and teaches me how to test and track various traffic sources to allow me to automate the business as much as possible once all of the initial work is done.

My primary concern is not with being held accountable. I can hold myself accountable once I finally see some kind of result from my work. My biggest problem is being pulled in a thousand different directions from different people and this system seems to make the most sense to me and seems to be the standard IM business model. Create a front end product, create some upsells and then cross promote affiliate offers. Rinse. Repeat. (give or take some creative angles you can use in a given market..)

I have very little experience in testing and tracking traffic sources, optimizing sales funnels (referring to your own back end products and upsets, not just creating different squeeze pages), and most definitely creating my own products.

I could spend tons of time and money learning how all of this is done from various IM veterans and do it myself, or I could treat it like a true education and learn from someone who has everything figured out and ready for me to copy and implement much like training would be for a brick and mortar business. Thats why I want a coach and lastly, to stop being alone on this.

I truly appreciate the feedback. This forum is always helpful. I will definitely be digging a bit deeper tomorrow and maybe find some more testimonials and verify his track record before taking the plunge. If all checks out then I think I'll go for it. I'm tired of screwing around and not being serious. I need a legitimate business plan and I don't have one so what is one to do? Find somebody who does and have them teach it to you.

Thanks again guys. I think I have my answer.

Any additional thoughts are more than welcome!!

What you describe here is not coaching...it is mentoring/training/consulting.

I've spent a LOT more than the figure you mentioned and found that it really helped speed up the learning. As others have said, you will more likely put things into action if you are paying for advice than if you go it alone.

You need to have a clearer understanding of the differences between coaching and mentoring etc....they are VERY different.

I think at this stage you need mentoring more than coaching. When you have developed a system that is making some money then you can go on and do some coaching where you'll be helped to develop and set higher goals.

I have never regretted any of the money I've ever spent on coaching and mentoring. You'll be using some of the things you've learned years later. A great investment.

      Good luck

Well, Mentoring/Coaching help you to move faster and reach your goal.
        ----
The most important element is to find a mentor/coach who can really help you with your plan. Honestly, it will be challenging to find a mentor/coach that will help you in great deal.
        1. Know your affordable spending limit.
        2. Ask people who has worked with the mentor/coach before about the program
        3. Ask questions directly form the mentor/coach.
        4. Try to understand the morals of the person who offers such a program.

Every time you take actions towards your goal, you will be one step closer to your goal. You may spend some money for sure, you will learn valuable lessons out of that. Another words, it's more than worth the money you spent.

Focus is the key, move forward. Like ford says"Go Further"

$3,000 is not much at all for proper one on one coaching.

    Group coaching is different.

Think about it for a second. What successful person in their right mind is going to be able to offer you one on one coaching for anything less than that. In fact if it were me I would be charging a lot more than $3,000 for one on one coaching. It puts a huge drain on my time and resources and so I would need to be compensated appropriately. Otherwise there is absolutely no point in doing it since I would just be losing time I could spend on much more profitable things inside my business.

So think about it like that.

If someone is able to offer you any type of one on one coaching for less than that kind of fee, they really wouldn't be the type of person I would want to learn from because they obviously have too much spare time on their hands and are willing to give it away far too cheaply. A good coach and the type of person you want to learn from is someone who is so busy and so profitable in their business that they need to be heavily compensated if they are to take time out to coach you one on one.

I may be rare, but what I do as a hobby amounts to one on one coaching, though not person to person or face to face.

People pay $50 for my book on importing, and for that they not only get all they need to know to get started, but I give ongoing support on a one to one basis.

I was forced to retire after heart surgery left me a near invalid. Being a Type A personality, and having for 22 years run a highly successful importing and B2B marketing business which I franchised in 4 countries, I would go crazy doing nothing.

Writing and publishing my book and helping the new entrepreneurs gives me great pleasure and keeps my brain active. When they write and tell me how well their new enterprise is going that gives me a great boost.

Without this activity I would have too much spare time on my hands.

I was just talking in general. That's great if that works for you. A coach or mentor though will generally charge what they feel they are worth. If I was getting coaching or mentoring I wouldn't want it from someone who is doing it because they have spare time on their hands. That's just my personal preference though. I would want to be taught by someone who is actively doing what it is they are teaching me and are very successful at it. In most cases those people will not have time to do one on one coaching OR they will charge a lot of money for it.

Glad to see you've found your answer. Money is easily made with the right knowledge and more importantly the right discipline and that is why coaching is never a bad idea—provided the coach is legit and has results. Those of us for whom this is a living know that IM is a constant process and we are always trying to stay ahead of the curve. The number one thing is treating this like the true goldmine that it is! You have to dig, but if you’re willing, there is a lot to be gained. You are who you hang out with, so surround yourself with the type of people you want to be like. Learn from those who do what you want to do. Work hard and best of luck!

well i think that there is enough info around the forums and utubethe list goes on too learn how to sell stuff, saying that the best investment you can make is investing in yourself and your growth i believe the best money spent on coaching would to just have someone to be accountable too that going to check up on you and make sure you are taking action im sure you have all read enough ebooks and bought enough products to know what to do working by yourself can make you a little lay or doubt you abilities come on you know what to do if you need a coach find a local life or success coach that makes you write your goals and goes through the steps on what is needed to get there and then calls you and make sure your taking action everyday and sticking to your goals go to a seminar meet new people get into a master mind group there are many free options

Another thing to keep in mind is the business model being taught...

There are a few folks running around teaching people to run certain business models that shouldn't be the primary income source... Mainly solo ads...

If you are planning to get coaching on how to build a list to sell solo ads then save your money! Find a coach that is teaching a LONG TERM business model and not a churn and burn business model.

    Just my 2 cents

A coach or a mentor is important, as long as you see this in the right way.

One of our biggest obstacle to getting whatever we want is lack of confidence which in turn leads to lack of action. The methodology to achieve anything worthwhile is available to most people. For example, you can discover more from "Guru Mastermind" from Eben Pagan than any coach can actually show yo.

However, you'll have second doubts. You'll achieve results that may or may not be the same as your projections. And that's when a coach is ideal. If in that moment a person can tell you "don't worry, you are doing fine, keep doing it, it's just a glass ceiling" or "let me take a look at it - ok, you are on the right path but you've overlooked this important detail", then it's worth far more than $3000.

But you must understand that a coach is not an encyclopedia. He's not there to be some form of Wikipedia for your IM needs. He's there in order to get you back on track provided that you already know a lot and you need course corrections from time to time.

A GOOD coach is the person you call once a week after you've invested 60 hours of work and you are stuck. A bad coach is the one that stays 24/7 on Skype explaining you things. This is because a good coach uses what he preaches while someone who spends 24/7 explaining things, even the most basic ones could do something better with his time.

Yes I would stick with it, if the 3k is a lot of money for you right now then maybe search for a cheaper coach but in the end if the quality of what he teaches is worth the 3k then stick with it.
I have had coaching on a number of occasions and spent over 2-3k for each coach and after the year I have been able to implement the things that I have been taught and am now able to work from home.
So it depends on whether you are doing this in the hope to find an easy way to make money online fast or whether you want to create a real business which will take time and money.
Good luck with your coaching and remember the most important thing is to implement what you learn.
    Information is useless without action.

Check background of this coach but coaching has turned my business in the right direction and may actually be the best 3k you can invest. Imagine if you invest 3k you will have the chance to make 20k, 50k, or 100k from that advice. Then you tell me if you think it is worth it. And the only difference between making nothing to 100k is an actionable plan and taking action every day to get one step closer.

Only thing is I am not just starting. I have been learning and researching to find the best possible business model that I could use to make money consistently and I feel that this would be the best model for me. This has been over the course of the better part of 1-2 years. I didn't just stumble upon this and thought.. "wow... I can make money on the internet..???"

My problem, again, is that I work much better and more productively when I have structure. When I have a real plan that I KNOW is going to make me money and that I'm doing things correctly. Kind of like I explained in a previous post.

For instance, I used to work for PayPal. They put you through a 4 week paid training program before they even put you out on the floor. You're getting paid during that time because ultimately, you're improving their customer experience which in turn brings in more customers which THEN in turn makes them more and more money. They have no problem paying you during training and giving you tons of benefits to working there so you can make you and them more successful.

Same thing goes for IM coaching. If you go into it like you're starting a new job and KNOW that you have specific tasks you have to complete in order to turn a profit for only YOU and NOT the coach then pulling somebody away from their own business to teach you what they know should make up for how much they would have made in that time period in their own business.

So there lies my problem.. I really don't know if I'm doing things correctly and I don't have the time or money to waste figuring out if I am.

I do have the money to invest one time for proper training and to cut my learning curve by years and most importantly, learn how to manage my ad/profit ratio so I don't lose my shirt...

Has the person offered to walk you through the method and have they promised you earnings? What I'm asking is, have they promised you that they'll teach you the system and work with you till you reach your goals, or whatever goals they've told you is possible with this system, and do you think they are good enough to follow through on their promise?

From your post, I can see that that's exactly what you want, so if you are sure this person can provide you that, and if you can afford that $3000, I'd tell you to go for it.

You have asked a great question but unfortunately you have
asked the wrong group of people. The general consensus here
is that you don't need a coach for anything. Everything is
on the Warrior Forum and you can read and learn for
    yourself.

That's because the vast majority of Warriors simply
cannot afford $3,000 for a coach and so cannot answer
that question from personal experience. You asked
those who used a coach to respond and most of the
response are from people who NEVER used a coach.

I've used a coach when I started internet marketing
and it was worth it. It short cut my learning and
gave me confidence where I lacked it.

This does not mean that all "coaching" are created
equal but you do sound like you have a great program
in mind if the information is factual.

A coach is only as good as the student who will use the methods.

I've never used a coach and now I wish I did when I started. I coached a few friends and they were able to make more money in 2 weeks than I did in 2 years.

I decided to use a personal coach, but I was a complete newb and needed to be shown everything. I went with Chris Ferrell, who after a year of being with him, I am still sold and will stay a customer for many years to come.

He is a little over 300 bucks a for a year with free hosting. You can pay monthly as well. Tons of videos on his site, teaching the basics and then ramping it up a bit for people just past the basics.

And truthfully, because I was lazy...I didnt do anything with the program for about 9 months. But in the last three months, I have made some pretty good strides.

So, I believe in coaches, if the price is right.

    Good luck

I think coaching is extremely important. You need guidance to make your way up. You can do it on your own, but the hard way. Or, you can invest in coaching and make it worth.

Absolutely - IF you are ready to 100% apply yourself and you are convinced the coach you go with has both a winning system (one that he can prove works) as well as a system that fits your strengths and passions...

For example, you could seek out a coach that has built a $100K business around Adsense sites, but if you don't like that business model, can't stand building a bunch of sites or content - then he is the wrong coach for you.

Look for a coach to both provide structure (system), but also to give you strong feedback along the way.

When I first started out in early 2000's I paid approx. $5000 to two coaches that helped me quickly learn the ropes, and get a jump on learning copywriting (how to sell via words) - the $5K was returned to me many times over within the first year.

What I would look for is would he split the $3K over two payments, the second payment coming a few weeks into the coaching so you can limit your risk until you become familiar with his coaching from the "inside"

Finally, make sure you look at all options, there are some very good systems with coaching for 1/3-1/2 of what you are about to pay this coach...depending on the type of business model you want to follow online.

It's a given that a coach/mentor/teacher is needed for long lasting success in any industry. Maybe the question is more "Would you pay $3,000 for a IM coach?" That is not something I can't answer because I don't know what you perceive as value truly and/or your expectations for $3,000 fully. If your answers line up with this trainer then roll with it. Lest you will learn is how not to pick a coach.

I've spent a total of $12.5K with my coach: $3K in 2010 and $9.5K in 2012. (This doesn't count the thousands of dollars I've spend on other courses and programs.) It was some of the best money I ever spent.

In general, I think spending money on coaching is some of the best money you could ever spend. One of the principles of success is to find someone who's successful doing what you want to do and model what they do. That's what a coach does: they teach/show you how to do it (whatever "it" is) successfully.

        A couple of caveats:

        1. If a coach guarantees you'll make a certain amount of money with their program, run! No coach can guarantee your success.

They may guarantee you'll make a certain amount or your money back -- and that's ok. But only YOU can determine whether you'll succeed with something.

        2. I firmly believe in coaching, but I don't think it's always for the complete newbie. If you're completely new to IM, you might be better served buying a few courses and getting your feet wet before investing any money in coaching.

My experience has been that I got a lot more out of coaching because I already had a basic IM education.

        3. Your personal circumstances will tell you if this is right for you at this time.

If you're a complete newbie and this is your last $3K, then it may not be right for you at this time. In this case, it's a timing issue.

Only you can know that. So the bottom line is "it depends."

As for the price, of course, I don't know what all is included, but $3K sounds extremely reasonable to me (assuming the coach is trustworthy and has results to back up his claims).

        I hope these guidelines help!

Not sure I would pay $3,000 for coaching.

I learned a LOT (and felt like I was being coached) from 3 different guys on here after buying their WSO´s which were multiple videos showing step by step what needed to be done. They even answered my questions when I wrote to them.

I would say I learned 80% of what I now have under my belt from them, the rest I have learned on my own from other sources or my own experiments.

I once found an ebook on "3 ways to make money online"

The first was : Hire a mentor

At the time I thought it was very funny, like "I will teach you how to drive - 1st lesson: Find an instructor!" but come to think about it there could be another option: "Lesson 1: Drive!" and crash a few cars until you learn.

Most people in IM are self-taught and maybe that's why the failure rate is so high. Maybe hiring a mentor is not that bad advice after all.

I think it is only smart to get a Mentor or Coach if you really want to know what you are doing. Like in ANY BUSINESS ENDEAVOR, you need to get TRAINED BY SOMEBODY to really learn fast. You can of course teach yourself if you dont mind wasting years and lots of money and energy doing trial and error

I have 4 degrees in Law including a PH.D, (and I own several companies including Law Firms in 2 countries and two offline MLM Companies) before trying to learn IM but I knew I still needed a mentor to quickly understand this new IM game when i decided to look at IM in Dec of 2012.

The trick though is to get the RIGHT COACH OR MENTOR (by the way $3,000 is NOT a lot to pay depending on the Coach). For intance, I found Mike Filsaime last week after almost paying $5,000 to another awesome Coach who is really good too. When I discovered Mike Filsaime and after going through some of his archives of past Masterminds, I would have gladly paid him $20,000 to train me.

Right now I simply signed up for a website system he has that only cost like $29 a month and then he gave access to LOTS OF MATERMINDS AND MENORRSHIP MATERIALS that simply blew me away FOR FREE. Just listening and watching the training videos and past training calls he had with his old mastermind groups in the last one week has given me knowledge that i think is worth over $50,000 and I will be the first to pay whatever he wants for his next mastermind (I have applied but they saw there is a waiting list! So, I will be going ith my $5000 guy from London next month after meeting him in person)

Of ocurse not everyone can afford $5,000 and I am not suggesting that. There are ways you can even get coaching for FREE from guys who have made millions consistently on the internet that you can independently verify. I got one that way and will be happy to give oyu the link to his $19 product that will give you access to years of mentoring and training videos that will simply drive you insane with joy (I cant post link here becos I am not sure of the rules and I try ot stay safe from being banned!)

So, I will suggest you find a credible coach WHO HAS ACTUALLY MADE MONEY IN A VERIFIABLE WAY. Too many newbies are also starting coaching programs becos thats what the gurus teach and its a free for all now. I COULD HAVE STARTED A MASTERMIND MYSELF TOO IF I WANTED though I am only 3 months into IM (Yeah, I joined IM in dec before Christmas and travelled out for 2 months before coming back in March but I have launched two WSOs htat sold a combined 120 copies within 10days RIGHT HERE on WF).
Of course I know now that is a joke compared to what big boys were doing, but I did it in March after being totally inacitve for my first two months!).

However, I know right now that if I do that, I will be ripping people off becos I am still learning myself. Once I have made some more serious demonstrable income by June (watch out!), I will of course start one too with proof of what a newbie can do in 3 months.

SO, I think dont look at the money you are paying but what you are getting. I would suggest you only sign up for their Masterminds first (most have a $1 trial offer) and then go through what they have in their Mastermind group BEFORE CONSIDERING ANYONE FOR MENTOR OR COACH AND PAYING ANY MONEY.
