How are they getting more traffic than me?

I have an herbal supplement company that does pretty well. But our competitor consistently gets a lot more traffic than we do (looks about 5x at last check).

Our Company --> A2xanxiety.com Traffic and Demographic Statistics by Quantcast
Their Company --> Lumiday.com Traffic and Demographic Statistics by Quantcast

We advertise pretty much exclusively on Google Display. We used to do Google Search until it just kind of stopped working. I think it was quality score related but I can't seem to return it to profitability. We've tried other advertising sources like Adblade, Adsonar, and some media buys with SiteScout with limited success.

I just can't seem to figure out how they are getting so much more traffic than us. Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to figure out where all this traffic to their website it coming from, and how I can tap into the same sources?

It's difficult to say without seeing both the adverts in question, as well as the landing pages of each.

The fact that your google search just stopped working, due to quality score, tells me that your advert might not be closely related to your landing page for example. I'm guessing you'd probably pay more than they do too...

Could be a variety of reasons. How long have they been in business? Are they doing PPC? If so which ones? Are you combining free marketing with your paid advertising? Do you have an affiliate program? Do THEY have an affiliate program? Are you willing to run more ads?

I personally wouldn't worry about competitors... do what you do to get sales, market to customers over and over again to get more profits, and market your site like a madman.

I would say look into CPV for mass exposure. Switch things up a bit, split test and see how it works out for you.

Your traffic is always directly proportional to the number of links you have in the wild -- in places where your target audience is looking to find information.

Maybe they have done some press releases and article marketing? Maybe they have a strong social media presence? Maybe they do video marketing in YouTube and other video sites?

Maybe they buy banner advertising on relevant health-related websites?

As soon as you said that you advertise "exclusively" on Google Display, I pretty much realized that your traffic problem most likely originates in the word "exclusively".

Traffic depends on how long are you in the field of business. If they are older than you and have more quality back links, stronger social media presence than you then they would obviously get more traffic than you.

Could be so many things... Display traffic isn't always "good" traffic, which I'm sure you've found out. Also, your keywords and ads could be performing poorly. I had a conversation when I was starting with an Adwords support person (yes, they do exist), and they gave me a ton of great tips which led to much improvement on my ads performance, and the quality of traffic I was receiving.
