So what's the deal with this marketing technique. Does it really increase sales? What's the theory behind it?

thanks!

Anything that reduces risk for the buyer - increases conversions.

Example of this include money back guarantees, free trials, etc.

It ensures people that if they buy the product, they will be able to get their money back. Basically, if you have a crap product you rely on the people that won't do a chargeback.

It convinces people to at least give your product a try.

It will only increase them until you get a page full of negative reviews and then not even a guarantee will help with conversion. Point is, focus on developing a good quality product and you wont have to worry about a high level refund.

Money back guarantee definitely works. I wouldn't sell anything without it. Your "shifting" the risk from your prospect onto YOUR behalf. And the longer the guarantee, the better.

Lots of real answers here, of course it works or no one would use it! Everyone wants to know that you stand behind your product enough to give them their money back if it's not what you say it is.
