Can't seem to get traffic...

Hi,

A few months ago I opened up my first proper website ( www.webhostfocus.net ) with the intention of earning money off of web host affiliate programs like HostGator etc... I'm still building on the site and hope to add new features in soon but so far it hasn't been very successful. I haven't yet earned anything out of the site, at the moment I'm more focusing on content but I can't seem to get any traffic to these articles!

I have a facebook page, a twitter account and have registered on web hosting forums to post around and promote my website but I can't seem to get a consistent flow of traffic. Right now, I'm probably getting about 10-15 UV's at the most. I don't have much money to spend on advertising right now, and I'm kind of stuck on what to do.

Thanks
#traffic

That's a rough niche.. I've made a few sales through bluehost affiliate program by doing videos on YouTube. Example: Show people how to build a website using Wordpress through the bluehost cpanel. Make sure to put a call to action at the end of the video and ask them to use the link in the description.

Another thing that seems to really work still is buying quality comments, views and likes for the video. The sky is the limit with all of the free scripts you can install through cpanel. You can show people how to build a forum, classified ads site, chat system you name it.

Looks very messy to me. When I got there I just wanted to leave. I think you need a clearer homepage which tells people the value of the site and what you want them to do.

    nothing to see here.

I used to have a reseller account with YouHosting (which I don't advise anymore lol) and I had the same problem as you.

I started driving traffic via PPC using Google Adwords and Bing. Now our sites are a little different bc mine wasn't set up as a blog but rather an actual service "web hosting" I would say build a static sales page and keep building your blog as well

With PPC you could target things like "cheap web hosting" "unlimited web hosting" ect. I had some good success creating banners rather than search engine txt ads. Also I was targeting world wide so I was getting clicks for close to $0.05. On average I would get 100 new sign ups a month and spend like $50 in advertising. Not bad at all.

Hope this gives you some ideas

Thanks, might give Adwords a shot then with a few dollars.

      Thanks.

I'll look into making a static home page that's maybe more attractive. Just don't have the money right now to invest in a custom theme.

Every time, creating a new adwords account is not a bad idea I think.

I looked at the site and it does not really 'excite me'. Don't get me wrong.... not trying to make you feel down. Just expressing my view hopefully taken as constructive criticism.

What is your USP? (Unique Selling Proposition) Why would 'I' want to visit your www and / or tell friends to visit? Is there an offer or some other benefit for me to visit (and hence 'click') your site? Look at it from your visitor's perspective.

I agree with using PPC as this may be your best bet in such a competitive market. Keywords would be extremely important here. So spend some quality research time.

      Hope you get through.

I see you are hanging out on webhostingtalk.com and that should be good for you over time. What I don't really see is what sets you apart right now. Your site is new and it takes time to build up traffic and a regular readership. It can take years, but a few small steps at a time and you should be able to see progress. Work on helping real people, not just putting up content, getting links and assuming google will do the rest.

use forum, blogs, articles and press releasees.

Everyone always whines about not getting traffic, but what if you have a list of 100 people 200 people dang it, lets say 2000 people..then all you need to do is send a message and hit send, and instantly you have visitors coming to your site.

then for the lifetime they are on your list, or until they unsubscribe you can have endless amounts of traffic.

This is how we have gone from websites with not traffic to making consistant sales each and every day, and then sold those sites for massive amounts of money. :-)

Its so simple yet no one does this.

do not underestimate listbuilding that is for sure.

      Hi there, Ewan!

First, please don't get mad ... the following is intended as a constructive criticism

      Your site:
      Google PR: 0
      Alexa Rank: 4,147,225
Links: 23 links, 16 of them Twitter.

You don't have an SEO problem, you have a content problem!

      - You went and picked the most crowded niche there is (web hosting). Don't believe me? OK. Do this: make a small site about a much less contested topic, say model trains. Your web hosting site has only about 3,000 words worth of unique content, so this should not be a big deal ... and do the same amount of SEO as you did in the web hosting site (26 links, so no big deal here either). Then watch your Google PR and Alexa rank zoom past your web hosting site.

      - You are going into this ultra-crowded, difficult-as-hell niche with about 3,000 words worth of content, total (16 articles of about 150 words each) ... that's like going into a gun fight with a knife!

      - The articles are very small, very vague and just general simple stuff (but then again, they are 150 words or so each!). There is very little or no value in the articles--a Wiki page would give your viewers 10-100 times more information, and better.

      - Your SEO was limited to some twitter stuff and a couple of low-value links. BUT ... no amount of SEO will make this site rank, anyway, because of the content. I'm not saying you need to make a 1,000+ page site with Megabytes of content, just that 3,000 words ain't enough, and particularly not in this niche.

      - You have so little content that if you were to place a bunch of ads on the right-hand panel the ads will be much bigger than the text ... bad idea!

Soo ... make content! When you talk about shared vs. dedicated hosting, for example, you are just giving them 5 paragraphs with the simplest stuff. What about: OK, here are the best 5 hosting sites, with a review for each one? Or these are the cheapest hosting sites, or the highest-quality, best service, whatever?

Finally, how about putting some meta tags in your site? Might help! :p
Get the SEOquake plug-in, you will see all the stats I am giving you ...

    Thanks everyone for replying.

Before I set up the site, I done some basic research about the niche but I guess I only concentrated on how much buyers there were instead of competition. I was hoping to add a page where users can click on a list of web hosts and submit a review of them, but I've yet to find a way of doing it like I want without advanced coding.

I'll take all the advice on board, and I'll try creating some more longer unique articles to put on the site. I'll give it a couple more months to see if there's an improvement, and if not move to another niche.

What is your bounce rate, I took a look at your site and I have to say I would hit the back button as soon as I arrived. Take a look at this http://mashable.com/ I know they have alot more money to spend on their site but look at how colourful if is and all of the images and videos.

I see three colours when I visit your site and no type of media except for text. You'll have trouble ranking on Google and attracting any reputable authoritative website links if you don't mix it up. I value my visitors and if I had a website in your niche I'm affraid I wouldn't send any traffic your way for fear of losing credibility with my regular visitors.

I'm not trying to bring you down, call it tough love, revamp your site before you start trying to drive more serious traffic to it.

Thanks, I don't have the money for a custom theme at the moment. I took a look at some premium themes but I don't want to download them as from what I've heard lots tend to be viruses and some have dodgy code.

Affiliate marketing is not easy now days. Google has it's scope on sites that are mostly affiliate links/content. You have to make most of your content unique and interesting in some way first then offer affiliate content. Affiliate content can't come first.

There are alot of free marketing techniques that i think you aren't utilizing. Plus i think your site could use a redesign. I would start with some PPC to test the niche, and if you get positive results, continue to operate in the niche. If it isn't profitable, switch niches. May sound like grunt work at first, but if a niche isn't responsive... it just isn't responsive. Best to just switch niches.

I have had some success with 7search and few other PPC sites. Fiverr has great online advertising gigs. Try Craigslist or backpage. These are all very cheap/free methods of advertising.

    Thanks for the replies.

I haven't got much money left to spend but I'll try spending the rest on PPC and if it doesn't work out switch niche...

Think the site would sell for much if I decided to change niche?

I'm going to try and get a refund (billed today) for this months billing and cancel my account and move on to a less competitive niche.

If I don't, I'll give it another couple of weeks with the site to see if I can improve it and if not sell it and move on.
