For those who do email marketing or at least sending out emails to your members/list, pls dont insult your members intelligence.

There are many examples i can give, but this is the latest.

It is from a very respectable warrior here.
One of the pioneers.
I have been on his list for about 2 + years.

But i havent been opening his mails or IM mails for that matter.

And guess what was the email saying.
it goes something like this.

"Hey, stop what you;re doing now and listen up.
I wasnt planning to share this but i finally decided to share this with my most active members.
And you qualified! - (my email here)

Quickly head over here and watch this before the general public gets hold of this.
And i will be taking it down in 24 hours.
"

Okay lets see what is wrong.

1. they always had to start with "STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING"
(i was reading your email, so shall i stop?? lol )

2. I didnt even open your email b4 in 2 years? How is that considered active, how did i qualified under your most active members?

3. Fake rush. It said go there b4 the public knows and it will be saturated, but wait, i thought u only told ur most active members?

4. I received the mail on friday, well past 24 hours, and the link is still active.

Seriously??

Dont treat ur members like idiots.
You just lose their respect.

This post initially got my curiosity.

    Now you've got my attention.

Btw, have to agree with the points.

Unfortunately some people just copy paste email templates and a blast its to their list. That is a sure fire way to decrease the message relevance.

That is right, but I am sure the guy who sent the email doesn't mean to be rude and insult their client. These guys are just inclined to use a method that "works". Maybe that is the limit of his creativity and he just lose respect because of that. I read that email and it is full of fake emotions. Please don't blame these people, you should tell him to stop and warn him. Taking the high road is quite hard but it worth the journey.

This phenomenum is very frequent on the web and it is harmful to other email marketers as well since it makes reading emails boring.

When I first saw the subject line, my reaction was to wonder how one would sound laughing seriously.

One of the mistakes made most often is forgetting that at the other end of the email is a real person. Not a wallet or a credit card or a mindless lump of goo.

I think you are being too generous. You sound like a nice person, but when people signed up to the list, they didn't do it to receive junk that is "full of fake emotions", and dishonest high pressure sales tactics, and they don't deserve it. Regardless of the intention, the actual practice is a shabby way to treat people who you are supposed to look out for.

I don't think the senders are evil, but they sure aren't looking out for the best interests of their lists. Rather, they are just doing what they think "works", as you said; but not what works for their people. Rather, what works to get money out of their people by engaging in deception instead of finding real ways to contribute.

While it is useless to dwell on "blaming" them, it certainly isn't anyone elses fault they abused the list. The high road could be getting off their lists asap. They are more likely to learn something from getting a lot of unsubs than from any warning imo.

I really wonder whether these emails do work any more.
I may well open the email, and then be so annoyed that I would unsubscribe.

I know I am very cynical about nearly all offers, deals, false urgency etc. these days, and it's not just people in the IM niche who can see through this stuff.
It's not going to come across as genuine--because it's not..

        Thats the whole point.

Because people on your list buy when they trust you.
And if this small things you lie to them, even an idiot would not trust him anymore.
And it affects the conversion rate.

Even when i was new to all this, my brain will automatically question stuff when it seems too good to be true.

I see a count down timer, i will be like, "sure a not, maybe this is fake, let me try refreshing." Then i will make a note to try to come back again tmr, and the week after just to see.

Then when they say dont click close, this is the final offer, i will purposely press close to see if he offer me another pop up.

Then slowly, when i want to buy any offer, i click the close button all the way to find out how many discounts they give b4 buying if i eventually want to buy.

So this shows that even new online buyer in any niche, will know all this sales gimmick are fake.
Not only ppl in the IM niche.

Unless you're a kid, but then again, if you under 18, u cant be buying anything online urself!

    SOP for email marketing.
So much so that it's become cliche.
I've received that same email from 4 - 5 different IMers for the same product, on the same day.

One of my favorites is the count-down timer.
Go to the page and the the copy says you MUST act in the next x amount of time and then I'm pulling this offer down.
Go to the page later and, miraculously the timer has been re-set.

I started in IM in 2003 and they were doing it then.

Well, there is 2 ways of looking at this.

    1. Whatever the subject heading was (stop what you're doing) - It worked. You by your own admission said you hadn't done that in years, but you opened this one. That's positive

    2. Insulted your intelligence with lame tired copy. That's negative.

Yea Accendo you're right on that. I was gonna say the same thing. If they hadn't gotten you to open an email in years, that all changed today. That's what matters. You even took the time to post about it.

He posted about it because he found it ridiculous. Sure, the subject line may have grabbed his attention, but the sender isn't going to make a dime for grabbing attention, if that attention is on the thought "I will never do business with this...person".

So I would say, no, that is not what matters; what matters is did the email help the relationship, and lead in the direction of selling something good to the prospect?

It did not. The attention that was grabbed led nowhere but to a negative post; hardly a win. The sender will probably never do business with the recipient as a result of the email; that is what matters; bottom line is it was a failure, unless the sender's goal is to piss people off.

You havent been reading or getting any of our points?

If his goal was just for me to open without buying then okay, i give it to you that he was successful.

But what is his goal in sending an email like that?
I submit to you that he wanted me to buy something thus the fake hype.

So open rates itself doesnt mean anything.

Its like when u do ppc marketing, you see that many people click on your ad, which is good, for level 1.
But that is not your ultimate goal.
You want conversions!! You want the dough man!

Ppl clicking is a good sign as your ad may be interesting, BUT there are many other reasons why people click.
          - i may see this ad familiar and so im just checking it out.
          - i am in the same niche thus i am checking my competitor out.
          - accidental clicks [very rare, but still happens]
          - people who dont know better [like me in the past] when i want to open a new window to search for something, i will click on an ad to trigger a pop up and then i use that window to surf other stuff, not actually looking at the ad. [and i do it on a daily basis, very often! ]

So with all this reasons, you are getting low level responds but not your ultimate goal.

So i definitely beg to defer that he was successful in his email marketing.
          [at least to me]

The number of email subject lines that can grab my attention is very few. Content-wise, it's even fewer, but I do subscribe to perhaps three or four marketers who do it well. Once again you all are missing a very important point: most "members" are newbies. We as experienced (to whatever degree ) marketers are not the "target" market.

These tactics work like gangbusters on the inexperienced. That's why so many use them. They don't care if you un-sub. There are many thousands of others who won't.

maybe he wasn't marketing to the intelligent.

often, well lately I get a lot of video ads which I open, but realize these guys aren't marketing to everyone as some of us like to read copy. so again most of the marketing is towards the less intelligent.

maybe, you should take it as a lesson learned and when you do your marketing make sure you market to everyone. also, realize just because someone is said to be a guru they can make mistakes too.

And that's why I've had an incredible love/hate relationship with IM in the 14 years I've been involved in it.

So many people seek out the "quick buck" and don't give a moments thought to the fact that there is a real, live, breathing human being on the other end of that email, and they have a story we'll never know.

Late last year, I decided that my business would live or die based on my ability to reach out to people, help them and teach them.

It's the only way that I can operate in this industry.

I may not make as much money as the guys who blast out endless "buy this amazing stuff before it's gone" types of emails. But in the end, I'll be able to go to bed at night knowing that I did everything I could to make a difference in the lives of those who decided to trust me with their email address.

It doesn't mean that I don't function as a marketer at all - some marketing is necessary in this business for survival. But what it does mean is that the marketing I do is a much softer, more honest sell - one that fully acknowledges and respects the real person on the other end reading (and trusting in) what I have to say.

It doesn't matter what works or what doesn't work. You don't just treat your subscribers like idiots because 'it works'. Well sadly a lot of marketers do but it's not going to keep you in this game very long.

Unfortunately I receive emails like the one the OP listed every single day of the week. A lot of them are from well known marketers who just peddle crap to keep the money coming in. It's so clear from a mile away that they look at their lists as nothing more than a money tree. They promote every product under the sun and then try and tell themselves they are helping people? Yeah right.

One of the best things you can ever do is to never forget that on the end of every email is a real person. It could be your mother, your father, your sister or your bother. How would you want them treated? A person who had to go and work to earn the money you are asking them to spend on your products. A person who is giving you their money instead of spending that money on food or clothes for their family.

Far too many marketers take their lists for granted, that's for sure.

      This.

There's way too much 'de-humanizing' of leads going on in the MMO community for my taste.

People treat their leads and customers like dollar signs, and not like the individuals they are.

I can tell you, people do not enjoy being taken for a ride. And even if you can rope 'em in now with those tactics, there will be a point where they wise up and the cash flow stops.

      Respect is a two-way street.

Do you want to be the snake oil salesman that has to constantly peddle crap to new suckers?

Or do you want to be the respected provider who helps others and is rewarded with happy, repeat customer base?

The most irritating aspect is that the "Regular Updates" rarely materialise!

Tanya, if you willingly gave them your contact info, the emails you get may be annoying, insulting or something else, but they are NOT spam.

If what they send is above and beyond the bounds of the permission you gave, unsubscribe. Too many people reporting any annoying email as spam biases the mechanical spam filters ISPs use and makes it harder for legitimate businesses to get their email delivered.

If you think someone is abusing your email address, report them to their autoresponder service and let them handle that individual.

Ray, it's not just Warriors. It's quite common for sellers' only update to be "hey, I found something else to plug for a commission."

One such clown told me, after I complained about him abusing my permission, that he was sending me updates. He was updating me on his latest offer. He never said he would update the product. The coup de grace was a lecture about "marketers whining about marketing", a phrase anyone who's been around here for any length of time has seen more than once to justify someone's hustle.

This is the reason why I don't use email swipes. They are written as if you're talking to 10 year olds. If you're selling to your list the least you can do is write a personal email to them. Or better still send them a video tutorial as to why the product or service you are promoting works.

I you want people to really read that what you have to say make it simple without those "high attention" phrases.
Always offer a personal contact and not just expect them to sign up for something. Show respect to people, especially if you are trying to sell them something. Be clear with that what you offering and tot just say "you can't miss this". Before clicking on the link that you offered let people know what it is about and how they will benefit from it.
I noticed many IM trying to sell stuff using WOW phrases, but it may work with newbies only and not in most cases.
It was the way of selling at the very beginning when IM just launched and people was over exited about any thing related to this, but these days people want to know what they buying, why they should by this and how they will benefit from this purchase.
I would just ignore messages like the one in OP as usually they are sent by someone who think they are cool when they actually need to find a good mentor and learn for them before sending any thing to people.
Wow phrases are good if they supported by respect, option of a personal contact and explanation on what is so WOW there.

I consider myself to be on the other side as of now... I'm a noob with not much experience under my belt. I've bought helpful WSO's to get me started, some not so much, but I've opted in to many lists.

I can't count how many 24 hour gifts I've gotten... that are still there after 24 hours. Then it redirects me to a WSO I should fork over my money to. The gift as well as info on what the hell I'm being redirected to would be nice... especially if you have done what's in that WSO and gave a report. Those I really like personally.

The ones that annoy me are the ones where I already bought their WSO, but they push an upsell, and that's basically it. No other helpful information, just BUY THIS IF YOU -insert fluff here-.

Like people have said, we are people too. The worse are those apart of email swapping. The guy didn't even hide the fact that he was apart of it, and I didn't click the link either. I thought you're suppose to build a relationship with your list? Where is the longevity?

Eventually people with unsubscribe or just not open up your emails. Or worse, spread that your emails to your lists are garbage lol.

I swear when I build my list one day I won't be such a snake that throws 24 hour gifts -_-

Any crap like this lands in my inbox and the unsubscribe button gets hit straight away.
I am currently on 2 people's list only, WillR and Wolfmmi, both rarely send emails and when they do its usually decent info in there. As a result I have bought from both.
THAT'S how you treat your list.

      Yup its true.

Sooner or later even if they believed it, they will find out.
      Just through curiosity.
They will purposely revisit the link again or refresh the page just to see the countdown timer reset.

Yes, there's a lot of this sort of thing popping up.

I'm guessing that some 'guru' said to do it this way, so everyone is having a try at it.

I don't think its insulting, just poorly thought out.

False scarcity is a silly thing to do anyway - people can always see through it. And this particular example is dumb! He's looking after you by giving you a sneak peek then he's going to release it to the public where it will become over saturated. The meaning is, don't buy this because even if you get on board early it will become over saturated by all the public having a go.

The problem with this from the start is it doesn't say anything about what the subscribers' interests are, or how this will related to those interests.

This might as well be written on a flyer, and blow around in the breeze until someone finally picks it up and puts it in the bin.

The 80:20 rule applies more like 99:1 when it comes to whose email we actually open!!

I am on the list of about 15-20 such people (just so that I know what's happening around) but for the past couple of weeks, the only emails I ever open are from Perry Marshall and Glenn Livingstone.

      Hi Georgia
      glad it lightened your day.

Yes i get alot of those you've got payment.

I tot i read in some terms of use from 3rd party autoresponder companies that there are some kind of regulation/restriction on how the subject should be.
No false info such as payment etc.
They literally gave the example of fake payment.

Or "you have won lottery" kind of subject lines.

      Dont know which one already..

People are so attuned to this now, that I've had people genuinely flip out when I've warned that an offer is ending at such and such a time, and they go to the offer after the deadline and it really is gone.

Crafting by knowing what they know and applying other tactics is not the way.

      Honesty is the best way.

People can feel the sincerity and trust you.

But what i was saying in my last post is when i actually was thinking if i want to limit my offer at the same time i dont want to appear all hypee by limiting it cos its been over done without actually limiting it.
