  As a freelancer, you can provide services and bid on open jobs at the sites mention above as well as on freelancer.com. If you want to start a business online, it is a different approach altogether.

You can make money by doing some freelance jobs and sell services on Fiverr. If you have a few bucks to invest, buy some domains and web hosting to make a website and flip (sell) it.

  If you are a classic freelancer, then visit oDesk.com, Freelancer.com, Elance.com and try to get some job there. If you are a new member there, then take first few jobs almost wihtout charging your services as you will need reputation. When you collect some reputation then you can start charging normal price.

Not sure how to answer this, but if you're a freelancer, you must have some good experience dealing with clients and is used to work on deadline. I suggest you to reminiscence you past job and see what kind of of gig that can pay your very well in a long term. It means your employer is having a good money from that type of job. So you can start your move with that experience in your hand.

I also believe using your professional experience to your advantage helps in starting your own business ventures.

Well, write an ebook about your personal journey in freelance world.
Include :

all the tears, joy and sadness. Tips and tricks.
How to deal with mass orders.
Your insights of freelance career the next 10 years. - Prediction
Sort of Freelance 101 guide.
Put a catchy title
ex: The Ultimate Black Book of Freelance by Wahaha

And put it on Kindle.

Then set up a membership course.

Step 1: Find a profitable niche / product. Find out what you are good at or what most people want. Go to 43Things, Google Trends and Now Relevant.

Step 2: Sign up for online marketplaces Amazon and Clickbank. Amazon sells physical products while Clickbank sells info products.

Step 3: See if Amazon and Clickbank has the products that most people want or need in 43Things, Google Trends and Now Relevant.

Step 4: Once you decided what product you want to promote, see if the product has an affiliate program that provides relevant keywords.

You can find out by scrolling all the way to the bottom of the salespage. See if there is this word affiliatesat the footer.

Step 5: Go to Google Keyword Tool and target keywords with 2K searches and more with low to medium competition. If you are promoting Amazon products, target brand-related keywords like Apple iPhone Reviews, Apple iPhone Info etc.

Step 6: Gather 30-40 keywords, download to Excel and save it to your PC.

Step 7: Register for Hostgator for web hosting and Namecheap for domain registration. From 30-40 keywords, choose the keyword with highest searches and lowest competition as your domain name. If it is not available, pick the next keyword until you find that is available for registration.

Also sign up for Aweber to build your list and send autoresponder emails and followups.

Step 8: Install Wordpress using your web hosting control panel. Look for that smiling face icon that says Fantasico. Follow the instructions to have your wordpress set up.

I used to do this manually but now I used Chris Reeves' Money Site Maker and XSitePro to create all my Wordpress and html sites.

Step 9: Generate 20-40 articles based on those keywords. Remember to put the keyword like Apple iPhone Reviews in title and first or second sentence of opening paragraph.

If you have no idea and do not want to spend money yet, sign up for this site called Free PLR Articles and this guy Robert Dickson will email you articles everyday on different topics for next 8-9 months.

Step 10: From 20-40 articles, select 10 for your site, 5 for your free report , 10 for article submission, another 10 for web 2.0 properties and the final 5 for press releases.

Also used some of them for your email swipes.

From the remaining 10 keywords if you gathered 50 words, created classifed sites and post them to free classified ads. You can also use them as PPC ads for either Google Adwords or Facebook Ads.

You can also create bookmarks and videos from those keywords. But it will be too long for me to explain everything here.

Some affiliate programs are kind enough to provide resources like product reviews, articles, ads and banners or images while others do not.

Step 11: Submit them to article, bookmarking, blogging, classified, PDF, press releases and video sharing sites.

Step 12: Rinse and repeat.

This is what I do everyday online. You will NOT make money immediately and I do confess NOT all sites make me money even if I do all these.

If you ask me what is the quickest way to make $ online, I honestly do not know. Even if I do, what works for me might not work for you.

You just have to find out what you are good at, making sure this is what people want and need and then keep on doing what I mentioned above and believing you can make money online until you start seeing results.

The other way is to create a squeeze page on any topic you like with a free report or video or both and participate in JV Giveaways and forums like this to get more people to see your site and optin to your list.

Even if you finally made money online, do not spent it all. Instead reinvest some into your business like hosting, domain and autoresponder which usually charges monthly.

To be honest I don't even know why people bother responding to these type of threads anymore...

If you really wanted to know how to make money online you would be doing some research and studying the mountains of information that's already on the internet.

If you have to ask this type of question in a public forum you probably shouldn't even be trying to make money online. Go find a desk job and work for someone who's going to boss you around for the rest of your life.

If you really want to make money online, you better start using your brain.

As others have mentioned on here, there are many ways to make money online. My personal experience has been with creating and selling my own info products such as reports and e-books.

I find that these work quite well and they sell well too. However, the key to making them sell well is reaching a target audience with them.

You can also do teleseminars, webinars and even create your own audio products or video products and sell them too.
