Where do you get all your images from?

Hi

I wanted to buy some images for my site but I noticed that prices of $1 per image can quickly sum up to high amounts if you have a site with a lot of posts and only one image per post is not enough.

Would it be possible to use images found on Google images when we also insert the source info of those images?

I don't tend to risk the free route - iStockphoto is what I use mostly, they're pretty good. Sure $1 a picture does mount up, but what's your end goal? Are you putting a call to action for a post? If not then you don't get the action that leads to the sale that should cover the $1.

I'd rather risk paying $1 and not making it back than pay nothing then get someone trying to sue me for illegal use of the picture for a few thousand...

Someone posted a list recently in this thread http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ee-images.html

A word of caution, make sure you read each site's T&Cs and licence agreement.

You can often get good pictures in the creative commons section of Flickr but you have to give them a credit for it with a link to their photostream. It can be at the bottom of a blog post.

Kozzi.com do both paid and free images although their search is not too good for the free images.

I am using stockphotofsorfree right now, they have more than 200k free photos for commercial use, and they offer it for free. The best section for me is the aerial photos, usually this is the place where photographer give out a sample of their work. I also like to visit their international section to take one or two images for my site.

Regarding commons section of Flickr - We need to give them a link even I check "Find content to use commercially" ?

I don't know about that...where did you read this? I need to take a look at this because I use a lot of their creative commons section of Flickr pictures and never credit with a link..

Using Free Images can cause all sorts of problems in the long term, I use photoxpress for mine. depending on what you you want them for 20 or so that you can recycle can often be enough for most sites.

You could end up getting your ass sued!

You see an image you like that free so you grab it and use it. You don't know where it originally came from.

If it was originally copyrighted you can get sued even though you though it was free.

There are thousands of cases of this happening, search for stuff about getty images suing people I am sure there are lots of threads here already

I always suggest purchasing images. Even on free sites you never know who uploaded those images and whether they had the right to do so. It's very risky and all it takes is ONE image to screw you over big time.

If you can't afford $1 per image then I would question how serious you are about your blog.

Treat this like a real business if you want it to be. If you don't treat it like a real business then it never will be.

I prefer Istockphoto, not only because of the selection, but also I don't have worry about licensing and rights. The quality is excellent, and if you can consistently get images at only $1 a piece then count yourself lucky. Not a bad price at all.

Yeah I don't understand why people pay for images (unless of course they are using them directly to make money, ex as an image on an ecover) Because (and correct me if I'm wrong) I always figured that most images on google, pinterest, fb, all have a certain level of "fair use" and that as long as you're not exploiting the image for profit, you can post it and share however you'd like... so if I had a blog about cooking and recipes and used a random image of pumpkin from google in my post about "pumpkin pie" it would be fine. Can someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that? thanks.

If that was my picture of a pumpkin then I could request you remove it and recompense me.

If you take a photograph, you own the copyright.

If anyone uses it without your permission then they are in breach of copyright.

So unless the image has a specific license allowing use then ..whoops!

Also if you have a picture on a blog that allows use for non commercial uses, and you have any adverts on there or anything that allows monetization... whoops breach of copyright.

The easiest way to deal with photos is to treat it like music.. would you use a track from a cd you bought on a video? (hopefully you answer no!)

There are thousands of cases of people being sued by companies like getty images. Just go to google and search for... Getty Images Sue

Would you like it if I came along to your website, copied a load of content, and then went and used it on my own website? No? Well that's what you are doing when using other people's images you have no permission to use. They are not owned by you and so you have no right to use them and if the owner wanted to, they could take legal action against you.

Is that really how you want to run your business? I hope not.

Just make sure you purchase images like every normal business does. This isn't something to play around with.

People these days seem to have a far too laxed attitude towards issues such as copyright.

      It amazes me.

I honestly think anyone telling you to go and use free images is just doing your business a disservice.

How are "copyright holders" not suing the hell out of pinterest then if what you guys are saying is true... that's what the entire site is all about... sharing other people's pictures. That's all I would be doing if I had a picture of a pumpkin on my website... sharing the picture. Not selling it, or making a pumpkin calendar of others pictures and selling that... I'm just sharing it with whoever happens to view my site. just like pinterest...

I actually have an account with 123rf.com and have purchased a few photos for my site... but I also contacted a webmaster and asked him what he thinks about using images from google etc and he said for the most part as long as you are not making money DIRECTLY from the picture, most cases pictures are fair use, especially if a citation is given back to the original source. (which let's be honest is sometimes really hard to find if you're collecting pictures from tumblr, google, pinterest, etc)

just wanted to see what you guys thought about that...

I use Istockphoto but not always, only when I needed images for a professional project. I also make sure to look for alternative sources like stockphotosforfree.com for daily blog posts. It can be a big problem if you have a good source of images so better make sure that you only get them from reputable websites despite being free.

Sharing a site's image on Pinterest or Facebook the normal way is editorial in nature, meaning it is being used as an editorial of that original source, for the purpose of even promoting the original source. But even then you should be careful.

Whereas stealing pictures from other websites/blogs without permission to "photo up" your own content, including using the tool of lazy thieves everywhere, Google images, will and should get you in a lot of very deep and very expensive crap.

Except in the case of permission through licensing, "giving credit" to the source to make it all better, is a myth that is perpetuated in forums by those who have never read a full sentence from copyright laws.

If you have permission from the photographer...which may then be given to stock photo websites, and the photo is of something or someone legally taken, only then would it be safe to use images free or not.

You can use Google to find legal to use images for almost anything.

Just search for what you are looking for in Google Images, click on 'Advanced Settings' and then at the bottom change 'not filtered by license' to 'free to use or share, even commercially'. This brings up all the photos that have been licensed to be reused on websites (even ones that make money), and as long as you give proper attribution to the original author (i.e 'By *insert name, licensed under the Creative Commons License') then your all set, you don't even need permission from the original author.

You can find images for almost anything by doing this, I use it for most of my websites.

Creative Commons CC BY and CC BY-SA is the image's source giving their permission in advance.

But, in the case of Flickr, for example, a Creative Commons license is to assume that the uploader of the image actually had the right to share the image in the first place....under ANY license at all. Where did they get the image from in the first place? ...and has their permission to re-license it been confirmed?

Then not to mention facial features in images and the whole "model release" issues.

And what about all of those screenshots of copyrighted websites? Those are copyrighted sites, whose snapshots are abundantly being distributed under a CC licenses. Yeah...that's safe

And also understanding that most (that is a good assumption) people won't be able to FIND or even look for the Google option to filter by license in the first place.

It is safer to use mainstream sites like istock where you are paying them as little as a buck, to cover your rear end and confirm all licensing and model releases.
