How many posts per month do you blog?

That's in actuality.

Hypothetically, if the quality were equal and in your budget, how many posts per month would you like to publish?

This isn't a Google SEO question, but your personal preference.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. It's helpful. Blogging daily is my ideal. But is that the reality? Not always! I've just started a new one and hope to get it to that point.

Quite simply the answer is EVERY DAY. Why? I have some personal theories:

      1. It makes you a better writer. More practice = more perfect.
      2. It gets you into a routine which is very important.
      3. You look MUCH more legitimate if your blog has at least one post, every single day, forever.
      4. Google does like it more. (although you said it's not a google seo question)

There's a great article about Jerry Seinfeld and what made him successful and he mentions the theory of "Not Breaking The Chain" and practicing and improving every single day. It definitely ties into this discussion IMO.
Great advice - love the bit about Seinfeld!
I've read where some IMers are content to post once-twice a week; but I wonder if they'd do more if they could, or if the minimum is fine for them.

I totally agree!!! This comment totally speaks my mind. The first thing is always "practice makes it better". There was some time I made blogging breaks due to travel or study. And when I tried to get back to it it was super difficult for me to type a word. Since then I try not to take a blog break ever, even just a week. Because it makes my function so slow to restart again!

But of course, quantity is over quality. I would say 3-4 times/week is quite a decent number for myself.

For me, the answer in actuality and hypothetically is the same - as often as I feel is needed, but only if I have something worthwhile to say.

I believe that, so long as your content is good and relevant, then you can't post too many times. But there's not much point in posting just for the sake of it. You won't enjoy it, your readers will likely not enjoy it and you'll just be filling your blog with garbage.

So ultimately, unless you're only posting once in a blue moon, I think the number of posts isn't that important. I don't actually even know how many posts I make in a month. To hazard a guess off the top of my head, I'd say it's probably something like 15-20 on average, but I've never actually thought about it before

its not so much about quantity but quality of your posts. if you post once a day, but crappy articles, your readership will go down the drain. however, if you post awesome content that your audience will take the time to read/comment, it doesnt matter how often you post.

tim ferris for example, only blogs about 1-2x per month while thesimpledollar.com posts almost daily. BOTH however have awesome content and strong readership - resulting in low bounce rate and higher time on site, which is good for SEO too

Good replies, very helpful! You know, web publishers around here really do seem to know how to make a successful blog or website.

I mean you'd have to be living under a rock not to have heard of the Google Panda/Penguin updates by now, right?

So why are so many bloggers still sourcing filler? On the other hand, some would rather update more often than less often. If you have a super duper expert posting once a month - it still seems like a pretty good waste of potential.

I'd like to publish about 33% fewer than I do now, I think.

I publish a new post on each of my business blogs 3 times per month (I have 8 of them, though, so that's 24 posts per month!), and am thinking of possibly reducing that to twice per month, so that it would leave me more time for other things.

I'm not convinced that I need quite as much "content" as I'm producing at the moment.

My situation may be slightly unusual, in that I'm an article marketer, and the blog posts I'm referring to here are also my articles for that purpose. Article marketing isn't about how many articles you have, of course: it's about who reads them (i.e. where else you get them published in front of the highly targeted traffic you want to attract), and cutting all my sites/niches down from "three times per month" to "twice per month" would give me more time to get them even more widely published than I do now. And that's really where the money is.

Posting content "just on your own site" and trying to do it very frequently seems almost hopelessly misguided, to me. Just about all you're ever going to attract that way is search engine traffic - not exactly an "ideal" way to build a business, to put it rather mildly! .

You need to understand the numbers

If 1 post is equal to x money a month/day

Then you need to understand how much is cost you create such post (money/time)

If its profitable, you should publish more,

If not you need to focus on making it more profitable/reduce costs

I have blogs that I have 10 posts a day, and I have blogs with 0 posts a day,

      Its a numbers game!

For example if you can hire 10 full time writers and be profitable much more than now, then its something to consider! if you can hire and manage 100 writers and be more profitable its even better!

Its all depend on the math,

Its a bit differernt because you might have a personal blog, but here is the same case also, in the end your goal is to make money (I assume you don't just do it for fun)

and in that case all come down to numbers.

I don't go by a specific number and if you aren't thinking in terms of "SEO" as you stated then you shouldn't do either.

I publish blog posts as and when I have something to share... usually for my subscribers. It's a great central hub in which to share ideas, news, products or content.

This might be one blog post every two weeks or three in one week. If you reverse your thinking and base it on "when you have something worthy or important to share" rather than trying to stick to a "number"... you'll be on the right path.

If you put out good content then whether it is once per fornight or 3 times per week your readers will visit and read your posts.

I think this is very much niche/topic dependent. Some niches can take multiple posts per day and others just multiple posts per week. As long as the posts are high quality and add value - that is the key!

My point is, don't sacrifice quality just to have a huge quantity of posts published.

Good point SarahZT. It only takes one bad post for a follower to lose interest! So get in a routine of writing or brainstorming a little each day and you'll find that you have plenty of good content. You could also segment 1 idea into multiple posts and just go a little bit more in depth. That way you get more bang for your buck for each topic you write about. Cheers and happy blogging.

I write every day, so that I can improve my skills, but I only post once or twice per week. So I guess that equates to approx. 4-8 times per month.

I don't really have a reason why, other than I find that I run out of post ideas if I try to post upwards of three to four times per week. I think that I made the mistake of posting so much more than I was promoting, which led to a lot of content with no readers.

Trying to find the balance is key. Posting once or twice per week seems to be the sweet spot for me.

It depends. If you've just launched your blog there's no point in posting articles every day because you are essentially wasting your content because you've no traffic. I prefer to just put up 5-6 posts to begin with then start promoting those posts and the blog in general.

If you have thousands of visitors per day then posting every day or two might make more sense but I prefer quality over quantity anyway.

I totally agree. I scanned through this thread and see some people writing once a day, others 2-3 a week etc. But, the real question is... how much traffic is all that writing bringing you? Are you wasting your time?

I used to post 2 articles per week, then I came up with an arbitrary goal of posting 5 a day. Well, long story short, I stopped posting any per week for a while. I checked my analytics and guess what... the daily traffic stayed the same!

So now I'm down to 1 new article per week. I figured that is good enough for now and have not seen a big influx in traffic. Stays about the same.

However, there are some blog posts I add that give my site a big spike in visitors because another blog will link to it. But then the traffic tapers off again.

Is anyone else experiencing similar results???

Posting articles to your site won't bring you any traffic to your site (at least not enough to matter) you need to be actively promoting each and every one of those posts to your target audience whether through syndicating on other blogs, sharing it on social media, creating a YT video about it and getting it ranked, posting to Reddit, stumbling it, blog commenting and forum posting and linking back to it and so on.

People don't seem to realise that just posting articles isn't enough.

Let's see... I've published 104 posts on my blog
in the last 10 months which is just over 10 per
    month on average.

I keep going back and forth between posting daily
and posting weekly. One month I'll feel like daily
content is the best, then the next I'll post 4-6
times and promote the same posts more.

So far this month I've published 2 posts and it's
the 10th. However, those two posts have generated
more traffic and subscribers than all my posts
    last month.

From reading through these responses, I feel
inspired to write more often and for more sites
    than just my own.

Either way, I stay in consistent communication
with my email list (my main audience) which I find
much more important than writing daily.

    Anyways...

To give a straight answer to the original question:

I'd like to post daily on multiple sites!

You know, this discussion reminds me of a school experiment I once read about. The teacher said "We're going into the Newspaper Hat business." He divided the class in two.

One group would concentrate their creative energy on creating and perfecting one newspaper hat design.

The other half would crank out as many hats as the group could come up with.

The "highest quality" hat design would indicate the winner.

Who do you think won? Quantity or Quality?

Someone suggested submitting one post per day, to get higher rankings on Google.

I did this and in just over a week Google did take more notice of my blog posts and a few of them got on the first page of Google.

The difficulty is finding something to write about every day. However what I did was just write a few headings down on a piece of paper and used these to give me an idea for each blog post.

All of the posts were fairly short about 300 words each or less.

A few ideas if you need ideas are to look at other blogs in your niche and comment on them.

    Work with lists:

For example a list of the best things in your niche.

The favourite books in your niche

The favourite writers, gurus in your niche and why.

Once I had over 50 different posts I did some on page SEO, just linking different articles to other articles on my blog, as I heard this would benefit my site on Google.

The encouraging thing about this is that I have only written a couple of extra posts this year on that blog, but I am still getting some good traffic from Google and other sources from it (over 2000 per month).

So it is worth putting the effort in I am sure you will be rewarded, but its best to think of a blog as a fairly long term project - I received very little traffic if any in the first couple of months, but after 6 months to a year I started to receive more traffic.

I hope you succeed with your blog.

Agree that practice makes perfect and ideally a writer should try to write everyday to hone his craft. However, if you are writing blog posts everyday (see: 365 days per year), it might lead to burn out. Writing a decent article, say around 500 words, takes probably between 1-4 hours, depending on your knowledge of the topic. If blogging is your business, treat it like a job. TAKE WEEKENDS OFF, AND GET A LIFE.

All these people saying to blog every day are wrong if you still haven't got an audience and no 6 months worth of blogging to get 500 visitors per month is NOT good.

Writing posts does not bring traffic unless you take every one of those posts and push it into your audiences faces and drive them to your site so stop wasting your time!

Less posting and more promoting will work!

And when you do make a post make sure every single one is ******* EPIC so that people take notice. If you write epic shit it will get shared, liked, tweeted, pinned, linked to and so on...basically doing all the promo work for you. Write mediocre shit and no one will pay attention.
