First of all write content that people want to read, not spun/no fiver gigs/$10 articles...

Once you have a decent article that address a problem, advice or gives the reader something. Post it on your facebook and twitter account (this should give you about 100 visitors and index the article).

second phase - find a forum related to the article i.e if I was writing about seo, I would have the article as a signature.

third phase - article marketing- two ways of doing this
first - have the key points of the article rewritten into about 400 words, then have ''the full article can be found at http://www.xyz or use anchor text.

or write a whole fresh article ie article b. Have article a link into article b ie 'For more articles about topic xyz click here'

never never have the same article link into the same article does not make sense, so frustrating to be reading an article, you see a follow up link, click on it, and its the same article again - easiest way to make sure the reader never comes back.

fourth phase - depending on what the article is and if it can generate cash, speak to marketers with huge email lists, I know some marketers that have up to 100k subscribers, now if they send out a email regarding your article and how they found it use full you will get traffic but they not going to do this for free (I would rather have 50% of something than 100% of nothing.

fifth phase - my favorite /hardest - guest blogging, if you can be featured on a related blog you can get that 1k easy mode.

please take note, each phase is just an option, no written rule that you need to do all or any of them or in that order.

I know you said free but sometimes guys dont work out the ROI of paid traffic.

    sorry for being critical

looking at the blog you have set up, you are entering a very difficult market, just on this forum I have read so many of the, my journey to seo.

fact - every one knows, no marketer will give away their gems for free/$7. Now I don't mean good advice I mean the gems. Every marketer though trial and error finds a gems and makes the most of it.

You have to use social media, talk to people, visit other blogs, comment on other blogs in your niche. Follow people in your social media, use it extensively. This means twitter, facebook (and facebook page), google plus. Google plus is good too, make sure to connect your Google plus account to your blog (google how to do that). Maybe even use pinterest, though it's hard because you really have to use eye popping pictures, not really for the marketing niche. Get it anyway, get everything.

Your website does need more content though, besides the actual posts. The calendar on the side is not necessary.

Also talk about things that will help people learn. This should be fine for you since you are starting out, it's good to document what you've learned, what you shouldn't do, mistakes, etc. Especially document any success.

I think that 90 day challenge this is interesting. Good way to start.

Speaking of social media, you need a social media plugin badly. One that shows your personal social media pages, and one for your posts so people can share your posts.

Everytime you do a post, you have should share it through all your social media outlets.

maybe visit Pat Flynn's blog, it's a good model to follow.

Oh and how can I forget, social media bookmarks (reddit, stumbleupon, digg... too many to name, just look up a list).

Social media is the key basically. If you really want to, get a youtube channel.

I agree. Other than the learning value in creating a blog / site, there is not much reason for anyone to visit unless it is from this thread checking it out. Maybe you should build an online business before dishing out posts on how to build an online business?

Beyond that, it is generic with no focus or targeting.

There should be a purpose in getting traffic. Conceptually, you could put up a blank page and ask how to get 1000 visitors to see that work of art. If you focus on the purpose then that often leads to getting SEO traffic and backlinks.

My first 1000 visitors were to a piece I wrote consisting of an expert article (over 2000 words) laser focused on a very specific and narrow legal problem I know a lot about. It still gets traffic today 15 years later.

      .

Perhaps it's my writing style that I need to look at, but the blog is about me starting an online business. - the fundamentals of building and growing a business is the same offline as online - only the tools and processes are different.

I have started and run 3 offline consultancy businesses in the last 19 years, and this is my first venture into online business, so I'm a newbie in the online area and happy to say so.

Not sure how writing about my progress is 'dishing out' posts on how to run an online business, but, hey ho.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

          Hi Gary,

The nice way to increase your traffic is to comment on other people's blogs. The task gets a bit easier when you find commentluv blogs. There, your last post (or the one you choose) will be displayed and so when other people comment they will see your link. And if your link is interesting they will click on your link and will visit your blog.

As well, try to comment early on after the post was just published (sign yourself up for Google Alerts). If you provide a thoughtful comment you increase the chances of your post link to be clicked.

          Good luck

          Dita

I never reach 500 visitor until someday I do something out of the box after getting many feedback from my list that ask me to bring out the visual out of my WP blog. As we know WP is a blogging platform that is not good to work with images. So I use tumblr anyway, that is how desperate I am to make at least 1000 visitor a day.
Basically, I use auto cross-link plugins that let tumblr visitor to go to my WordPress blog and get more information in there. If you niche is depend on an image as a way to promote it, try tumblr. I get more than 800 unique visitor a day from tumblr alone.

My first 1,000 visitors? Have to dig deep in the old gray matter for that one, as it was almost 17 years ago...

Seems to me it was a combination of messages in Usenet newsgroups, links on FFA pages, a banner exchange and some then-acceptable SEO that would get you banned in a heartbeat today.

If I had to do it today, I'd do it with a combination of forum marketing, content syndication, guest blogging and commenting, and paid ads. Mostly the paid ads to jumpstart things. For the first 1,000, SEO is often very slow. I do reasonable onpage SEO (mainly what can be built into my site templates) and let it go at that. Life's too short to spend it worrying what the next animal out of the Google ark will be.

This is so correct! 12 years ago, using a lot of the methods John mentions, I was able to dominate Google. For one very competitive term I actually had 7 of my sites on G's page one. This brought in around $20,000 a month while it lasted (a couple of years) but would get you a ban in an instant if you tried the same methods today.

I would proceed as John suggests plus some YouTube marketing. Progress may not be as fast as you'd like, but you'll most likely find success and not get your site penalised.

Hmm, well building my first site, registering with all the search engines and waiting... nothing. Got impatient and starting buying Adwords. Started to get traffic and sales, but not that many. Continued to add to my site, adding lots of content, then noticed started getting some organic traffic from Google - then added more pages, more content, then at some point it started to flow every day

Just keep at it, always add more to your site, but don't be afraid to try Adwords just for the experience, you can have a budget of $5 a day if you want

right now I get content for my site here: http://content-for-your-site.com

You first make sure you have enough good content on your website...or a good/interesting offer for your future visitors. My first visitors are always my friends...I tell them about my new website and share my website on Facebook. Then I start using traffic exchanges, blog comment and forum signatures to get more traffic.

Put a real value in your blog. And people will appreciate you later.

As an example, Yesterday I got a huge amount of traffic from Alexander Krulik email list...This is because I put a big value in my video tutorial about how I demonstrated my step by step tutorial using Magic Submitter.

That was not in my strategy at all..an unexpected traffic from Alex..!!

The second strategy is to find your audience online...forum, active social media like facebook page and google alert !!

    Hope that helps ya..

Do keyword search at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal , choose keywords which have low competition.

Write a lot of articles for posting them to your blog. All articles must be original and copypass 100%.

By using this method, you will get 1000+ real visitors monthly.

Do you have a business plan? That'd be a good place to start. It should all be listed in your business plan, if it isn't or you don't have one. Then I'm sorry to say it you still don't have your head screwed on and you're not focused.

The Internet is not an easy environment to flourish in, not any more - and by golly if you've not got a strategy or a plan of what the heck you're going to do. You're already starting to fail again.

    That's the cold hard truth.

While Social media is a great platform where people build their traffic for the last couple of years.

You should look at youtube as well as doing interviews with industry experts. This seems to be the trend in getting good traffic in recent months.
