This Guy Wants To Sell Me His 1329 Opt In List For Just $75? What gives?

I'm curious to know why one person on my Skype wants to sell me an opt in list for just $75, the list has 1329 opt ins.

I am wondering if I am started to getting scammed by "fake list sellers"?

Is this common in this industry? After all, you just write random gmails and claim they are "real" e-mails part of a list?

If someone offers tons of opt ins for a cheap price, that should ring some alarm clocks in my mind?

I have told him "I don't have the money yet" and he said he "could wait" and he has, but now he is even calling on my freakin cell phone from his country (crazy, he lives in Asia).

Because of his actions seem to be like needy guy calling a woman every day I am wondering if he really does not stand behind the quality of the list (that the e-mails are true).

What are your experiences with people telling they got e-mail lists to sell to you?

    it's probably fake generated emails.

your better off throwing your money in the trash can.

It's probably a scam, nobody would sell a list so cheap. Not one making money anyway.

Even if the list is real, you have to wonder how many other people he's trying to sell it to.

Let's put it this way. I wouldn't touch that offer with your ten foot pole...
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7949713].message }}
  • I would ask more specific questions, maybe your seller is unaware to similar pricing of such lists that have merit? Ask how the list was generated? Why he no longer needs the list? How can he guarantee it will be sold to you and to you alone?

Maybe it's legit, maybe not. Dig deeper.

Not sure the legalities of this but how do you expect to use this list? Are you in the same niche as him? I'm fairly positive that those on the list will realize the "switch" of users and will start to drop off. That and you have no idea how the list was created nor if he's sending this list off to a multitude a people. Hell he may even be re-selling a list someone else had. Personally I wouldn't buy into it nor entertain his offers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if his list was transferred to you, then to comply with anti-spam laws your new list MUST re-confirm their subscription, in which case you would stand to lose around 2/3 of your list.

Yea it is most likely a scam.

Or he build the list using Adf.ly in witch you can get results like that in a day with cheap as traffic and the list will be completely unresponsive.

    I wouldn't go near it.

Really? Is it not that obvious? He's taking you for a ride. People sell legitimate email lists, but they require working with the autoresponder provider, and are usually packaged with websites that are for sale.

This guy is just spamming people on skype...which is becoming the new channel for spammers to work their dirty deeds.

I wouldn't buy it. Sounds like he's "desperate" to get rid of it. I also wouldn't buy a list that I didn't know how it was created. Is it a legit list that is targeted to what you have to sell? Are they double optin? Are they freebie seekers? Did they really optin or were they put on the list without their knowledge? Too many variables.

    Don't do it.

You can give it a try if you have spare cash..
It might turn out to be a good list..
    Who know..

I personally will not buy it.
I won't sell my list as it is against my
    Agreement with my subscribers during
    Their opt-in..

There are all sorts of people in IM..
You just have to take care of yourself.

I'll go against the grain, again. Ask him if you can mail to the list once to see what the results are. If he agrees get the password to his AR account and see what happens.

Thank you very much for your replies!

I actually "bought" (for a few bucks so no problems without losing a few bucks here) one smaller list from him and when he started a few weeks later up till now talking about a "better" and "bigger" list, my knowledge about Commitment & Consistency popped up in my mind and I thought, "Hey, wait a minute, that's a principle of influence, cool!"

I started to get skeptical here, particularly when he was really wanting to sell it "just to me" and how he had refused others to buy it because he claimed, "they would only spam the lists with crap, but you seem to want to provide value".

I do not know this, but I guess he would say the very same thing to everyone else he maybe tried to sell it to as well! ;-)

Furthermore, when I created this post, he saw it (he is apparently active here, probably looking for more people, I will not expose him though, I think people will be able to spot the fake from a mile away).

When he saw this thread he said "I had hurt him and he thought that we were friends" and I immediately saw the emotional games some girls run on their wussy boyfriends and it was too laughable to me.

Then I dropped the bomb and he went offline, "If you are TRULY not in it for the money, then you would give me the list for free, it's as simple as that. Don't waste your time playing emotional games with me, because it is obvious it is ridiculous "

I guess, we all learn something new every day and this was a good experience for me to have gone through! :-)

Thank you very much once again for sharing what was too obvious in your eyes (third-parties tend to see through one's blind-spots).

Take Care & Have An Awesome Day, Fellow Warriors! / Max "MaxTheMarketer" K.

P.S. I agree that one should build one's own list instead of buying because then the subscribers have osme sense of what is happening when an e-mail pops up in their inboxes.

Both classic scammers tricks, along with getting cross with you when you start to smell a rat.

These are the same tactics the romance scammers use.

The list maybe real but there's a good chance that the list is dead. (or maybe not) Also like others have said, the seller probably will or have sold the same exact list to many others. Needless to say if your still thinking about buying get some more information from seller like.

    1. How was the list obtained / how he generated leads.
    2. What's the list niche
    3. What offers have been promoted to the list and how often
    4. What's the open rate / if he has one or if he tracked it to begin with.

Stuff like that. In the end live and learn.

Thank you very much for all your replies fellow warriors!

At the end of the day, I never purchased from him. I think it is better if I build my list as I will know what kind of people I gather (right niche-targeted people) so my follow-ups with them are congruent and makes sense to them as well.

It was a fun experience though!

And to add the sweet ice cream one the cake; he said, "Buy this and I will also give you 10,000,000 mails too that friends of mine got for me!"

Now that is not really being able to understand the concept of "value" and "price" haha! ^^,

My suggestion. Since you probably have idea of the niche. Put offer together for the niche. It can be cheap offer. Track your link to know number of clicks. And if their is any sales at all.

This guy is probably one of those people who are going around and selling their buyers email addresses. Don't make the mistake of buying an email list since you can't just randomly start emailing people who don't know you. Well you can but it won't work very well.

I would also have it a bet that you are not the only person he is trying to sell this list to. He probably goes around selling it to anyone who is stupid enough to say yes. Walk away and if he's a member of this forum then report him to the helpdesk.

That's a no-go. That size of list for only $75? With one email to this list you could probably make $200... assuming it was targeted though - which i believe it's not. Don't buy it. Doesn't make sense.

    What gives?

The guy looking to sell it to you doesn't think it's worth $75.

How do I know this? He's looking to sell it to you! If he thought it was worth more for him...he'd keep it, eh?

That doesn't necessarily make it a scam or bad for you...plenty of people sell things that aren't worth as much to them but are extremely valuable to others.

If you think that's the case here, snatch it up.

    Hi,
It's probably a scam so watch out! No one will sell you his opt list for such a price. It takes a long time to create a good and effective opt list that can actually yield money, so it doesn't make any sense! Invest your 75$ rather throw it to the garbage.

    GOOD LUCK!

    Hello MaxTheMarketer,

You always have to be careful purchasing other people's contact lists. Usually, you should only do it via very verifiable, trusted sources, then follow up with them in the proper manner (i.e. introduce yourself, let them know how you came to acquire their contact information, and give them the option of opting out).

I find it very odd that a guy with well over 1,000 names, email addresses (?- what exact contact information is he offering? Maybe you mentioned this and I missed it?) is only selling it for $75. Would seem to me, as others have mentioned, that he's either not making money from the list (i.e. not targeted), he got this list through illegal means (harvesting), and/or he's trying to sell the list to more than just you.

You can dig deeper, but I'd be VERY leery of doing business with this guy- too much seems fishy, never mind the fact now he's calling your personal cell phone. He really seems like he wants to close this deal, and at a relatively low amount for a list that size - why?

Personally, I'd look elsewhere at verifiable, reputable sources if I wanted to buy leads. Just my 2 cents.

Hope this helps- good luck, and be careful!

    Take care,

You'd have to do your due dilligence.

I'd say that it's probably a bit list of freebie seekers, or they don't know the value of their list and are trying to make some money from it somehow. That's not necessarily a bad thing, if you can monetise the list.

The thing you have to be wary of is how the list was built, what niche the list is built around, and whether it has made any sales ever. You could easily have a list of 10,000 subscriber, particularly if they came from PPV, and not make any money from them...

To put this in perspective though, you would expect only 150-200 click solo ad for this money, which at best is going to result in about a 50% opt-in rate. So yes, it is very cheap.

I would not trust the guy, it's sounds like a scam, I don't believe anyone with a descent list would sell it of completely at all.
You probably would never actually receive the lists and they probably if you did receive them are generated through something like fakename.com or similar.
I guarantee he has sold this same bogus list to others before.

Stay clear is my suggestion. Try email or adswaps instead just pay to mail to a reputable list in your niche and offer them something for free when they opt in. Doing something like this you will probably spend a little more but you will get a targeted list and real people to market to in the future.
