Coaching without perfect english?

Hey Warriors,

Unfortunately, my english is not perfect, and my accent is ridiculous. I would like to start a 1on1 coaching for those people who can't make money or make little money online.

You could ask the question, how the hell I even make money (sometimes x,xxx a day) if I don't even speak english correctly... well, when I need english content, I outsource it usually...

What do you think, is that possible somehow? Or people won't like my coaching, so I should just forget about it? Maybe I should create an ebook or video training instead of 1on1 live coaching, and hire someone to correct my grammar errors in the book or speak under my video with native english?

I'm from Hungary btw.

Thanks.

I think you should try American English Pronunciation Accent Reduction Classes And Training | Pronunciation Pro it's really a great site. I recommend you to try the option in the middle, it's really great.

I bookmarked it! Looks promising, thanks!

Well, my bigger problem than my accent is sometimes I can't understand those who speak english fast, if I ask them to speak slower or write down what they said, that sounds lame lol. Thanks for your reply!

I think you should forget about it. If you want you can try creating a product in this market, but it's heavily saturated and I wouldn't recommend it.

Its not your accent that matters, its your ability to communicate that is most important. If you can communicate well with a coaching student and they find what you are teaching valuable, then there shouldn't be any problem at all.

If your communication hinders the learning experience, then a product or an alternative method of delivering your information should be looked into...

Well, I think my english coaching couldn't be that impressive like I would speak in hungarian. Now I realized a product will work better for me. (why couldn't I've been born in the US... )

A strong accent could easily hinder ones ability to communicate so a strong accent could most defiantly be a problem. Look at one of the more recent stories surrounding the American X-Factor, Cheryl Cole was going to be a judge on the show but her accent was to hard for some Americans to understand. She had to go through classes to change the way she spoke so people could understand her.

I agree with the rest though, being able to communicate well with people on a 1 to 1 basis is a must. If you can not at least communicate to them at a good standard the native speaker will become frustrated trying to figure what you are actually trying to say.

Have you tried out Rosetta Stone to learn how to speak correctly OP?

Your writing is fine, how do you plan to actually do the coaching? Video, phone, email?
I think if you can provide coaching by using skype and a video call, it might make it easier for someone to understand you and vice versa.

I planned it through Skype call/video call, but I imagined what would happen if i don't understand my student because he/she speaks too fast, it would be totally lame if I ask them to write down what they said because i didn't understand lol.

It sounds like you feel you may have a hard time understanding english speaking students, rather than them understanding you?
That might be more of an issue, but keep working on your training and watch more english videos on you tube or TV if you get shows from the US in Hungary.

              Good luck

Great tip I watch every movie and TV series with english dub and english subtitles. I do understand them mostly but sometimes I need to look down at the subtitles because I didn't recognize the words I heard.

Well, I hope my english will be good enough in a few years to do such things like coaching. The truth is my english improved a lot since i got into IM and make my living online, so I hope it be even better.

If you are coaching about making money... that has to be your strong suit.

You need to speak enough English to communicate effectively, but that is about it.

The world is huge, not only native English speakers use English to communicate. Anyone using English as a second language will have no issues whatsoever. Those who have English as first language will not either if you deliver in the bottom line... hep them improve their business.

You might not have discriminating language purists among your clients (Paul Myers calls them wombats)... oh well, many of those do not necessarily have what it takes to make it anyway (obstructive mentality).

                  Just my 0.00002 cents...

I'm from Hungary, and yea, the average monthly income here is $500-1000 per month, so after paying rent, bills, etc, no one have money to spend on my coaching...

There is one more reason, there are not too much internet marketers here, they don't buy courses, if they want to sell something, they put their stuff on classifieds or they just add their websites to website directories and their sites will rank. This is how Google works here lol! I could be #1 for any keyword but I wouldn't make money even close to my current earnings.

Being a student and a huge sucker for coachings and info products I would suggest you to go for it.

    It can be your USP.

By reading your thread a visitor might feel that if this guy who can't even speak proper English can make it in IM even I can.

I would suggest you to be very upfront about it, may be even use it as a headline:

"Discover how a regular guy who can't even speak proper English makes six figures from his online business"

You could certainly coach without perfect English. Your buyers are buying what they hope is a positive result. Your customers care about making money themselves.

If you can teach them that they won't care.

    Hi,
you will be surprised but many internet marketers don't have good English. First of all I suggest that you will take an English lessons. Knowing English will make it much easier for you to manage. Secondly making a video is a great idea not only because of your English, but also because it's a great way to reach more people in minimum time. The people with weak English that I know also use outsourcing so I guess it's good solution. Also I believe that foreign accent won't make you look bad. There are a few great internet marketers I know that teach IM with strong foreign accent and they are still considered to be the best in their field.

    Good Luck!

These are two very different issues. People are going to vary a lot in their reactions to this. I suspect that for most of your potential clients, your accent really isn't going to matter too much. Your English is another matter (it might, but your posts certainly make it look adequate?).

I decided to create a product instead, im sure I have to practice english before I even think about coaching people. I want to impress people, want them to treat me as a smart guy who knows his thing - and I feel I just can't express myself enough with my current english.

      This.

People won't give a toss about your accent and pronunciation if you make 'em rich. If this really is a big concern to you, then take on a couple of members to coach for free, let them post their results, and you'll have a stampede of sign-ups. It would be a rather refreshing change from super-slick, insubstantial marketing products.

If you have the desire to coach, then go for it. Don't let anyone steal your dreams man. To be honest, all of us have some type of barrier in our way. We just have to make a decision to overcome it just as you are. Who are we to tell you not to pursue what's in your heart?

One other thought I had was that you could even partner with someone that had better communication skills than yourself, and you guys could work your coaching together. Where there is a will, there is a way.

My coach is from Austria, and although he has an accent, I can understand him. He makes sure he speaks clearly and slowly. Coaching is good money. I do it. So, if you desire to do it, then just do it. Charge less, speak slowly, and you will naturally get better at English.

    Good luck!

Accents don't matter if you have a story worth telling IMO. So if you know your s*** and you can teach someone to get them on the right path so they start making money - then that is all that matters - the end; that they are making money.

I think people are more interested in the content when choosing a coach, As ong as you provide valuable information, that turns out to be succesfull I don't think people will mind your accent. The important thing is to be able to get the message through, despite grammar or spelling errors.

Not to mention, that judging strictly by your post, you English is not that bad.

    Hey,

Don't bother with accent. I am ex captain and I have been everywhere in the world. I was understood by everybody and I could understand people everywhere. As one of my British friend says he knows two languages - one is English and another one is English for foreigners. That means slowly and aloud.

If you know your subject just do it. Good luck!

Judging from your posts you dont have a problem in writing in English. You can use instant messaging to do it? most coaches prefer instant messaging as compared to voice or video calls and it is still quite effective.

Here's something no one has mentioned yet. Don't worry about asking people to speak slowly so you can understand them better. It won't sound lame or at least it shouldn't. If they refuse to help you help them, just insist on doing the coaching in Hungarian. My guess is that your English is far superior to their Hungarian.

As far as being born a native English speaker...

A few years ago, I was on a cruise. While waiting in line for a tender to take us to the port, I eavesdropped on a couple of guys 'trying' to talk football. One was from Texas in the USA, the other was from Manchester in the UK. Talk about two people seperated by a common language! Both accents were so thick it was hard to identify either as English. I don't think they even realized that they were talking about completely different games...
