Making money online is like playing a video game

I was at my daughter's school a while back where parents were asked to talk about their careers.

One student asked me how hard it is to make money online, so I tried to explain it to them in terms they could understand and to teach them about persistence.

There are two common scenarios when one decides to begin playing video games. Some start out by scanning through the entire instruction manual, familiarizing themselves with the controls. Others would simply jump right into the game, figuring things out as they went along.

These are basically the same options you get when you decide to make money online. As a beginner in the industry you choose to either sit down and take time to learn as much as you can on how to make money online, or you can play it by ear, learning as you go along.

When playing a video game you generally start out with nothing, then as you progress you get a little better as you figure out how the game works. You acquire better gear/weapons, gold, level up and get stronger and better. At times, you may stumble but you will definitely get right back into it as soon as you can right? You don't quit, you may get frustrated but you keep trying until you get past that section of the game, the whole time getting better and better at playing.

In no time, you get a good handle of matters. Eventually, you are ready to take on the big boss. And, as with many first encounters, you will find it difficult but you will not give up. You didn't come this far for nothing, right? Some people will win on their first try. And for most it is going to take you a few times before you actually succeed in defeating the boss. But the thing that matters is that you eventually do.

So my advice to noobs, is that if you take a similar approach by not giving up and keep working at it, you're going to make money online. It's easy to make money online, how much money you make really depends on how much time and effort you spend on it. There is no quick cheat or hack to make money fast, no matter what people tell you.

That is actually very good advice. I'm actually very good at video games. I guess if anyone puts in the time and focus that I've put into gaming of course they'd have success with it.

Yeah its kind of like playing video games, but with making money there is no set path to follow like most games. Its more like a sand box massively multiplayer game where the only goal is to make money, and you can do it many ways.

  • If you simplify the matter down to such level, then the same priciples apply to every aspect of life: marriage, sport training, getting a college degree, etc.

Simplifications like this is what actually make people fail: you overlook the "beef" of the matter, the details, and success/failure in any venture you undertake are often separated by just a fistful of those details.

Well I guess it can be true to a point because there is strategy involved and there will always be challenges ahead as if it was a video game.

A lot of people want the quick fix that will make them money fast, or a diet pill that will make them slim fast. It takes a lot of work to make money, just like it losing weight takes time.

I really love when people use that analogy, especially considering my business revolves around gaming. I'm also a member on NerdFitness and they use the same analogy towards being healthy and fit.

It's very true. Anything in life is like a video game, after all video games just imitate life in their own way. Level up, and you can now do bigger and better things. If you "level up" in your business you may have more connections, more resources to which you can now do more with.

I've thought that way about business/internet marketing since I was in High School. A lot of things in life share parallels with video games, but that's still a great "broad transfer" that you've made on your own, so I commend you for that.

just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and eventually you'll get there.

  • Totally agree mate. This morning I got up and actually said to myself "time to start playing my real life video game for the day" lol. Video games also got me started in the internet biz. In 1999 I remember I was at home playing Ultima Online. I had my character standing at a lake and fishing. I was improving my characters fishing skill or something in the game, and I remember thinking to myself "Why don't I do something on the internet that makes me real money instead of selling fish in a video game". It inspired me to play the real life game of online marketing and it changed my life forever.

    I agree.
