Traffic from Blankrefer.com ?

I've been getting quite a lot of referral traffic from blankrefer.com . Wasn't aware of this site but apparently it allows you to hide your site from showing up as the referrer when your visitors are referred to another site.

So.. why would one use that? If you're linking/referring to me, why hide?
And another thing, any way for me to bypass this and find that specific referrer?

Thanks!

If a content thief was linking to the download URL for your product, they would hide the referrer, so that you could not figure out how to stop people from stealing your product.

There are lots of additional reasons to hide referrer.

most of them blackhat. Often times doing so is a violation of terms of service policies for affiliate programs and such as well. Its done a lot by cpa guys. although they use more complex methods.

Are there any things on your site that people have to pay for? It could be that those links are from blackhat sites or similar.

Just as important as the referrer is the page they're visiting so check that out too.

If you find they're linking to a download page then that's the reason.

I'm not offering my own products, just affiliated ones, so no download/payment on my site.
The landing page is mainly the homepage, but a few other as well.

Any Anti-Blankrefer tool to see where it's coming from?

not that i am aware of.

However you can filter traffic by refer and thus redirect all traffic from blankrefer.com to a different place. From there, you might be able to get creative and come up with a way to figure out why someone is using this tactic on your site.

I have done this kind of thing before.

Doing so was quite profitable when a former competitor was linking to me next to an attempt to smear my service.

I redirected those users to a custom sales page.

Within just a few weeks, the competitor removed the link from his site. LOL

If you use Wordpress there are anti-spam/security plugins that could work. I know one makes it so the person can't visit the site if they are using a proxy address. It uses a lot of memory, but if you can't track it backwards you should be able to stop their access.

Sounds like your product probably ended up on a blackhat forum.
