Free e book offer...optin..opt out - is it worth it?

Hi,

I am new to IM and am starting to get disillusioned by it all.

I have a free weightloss e book as the free gift at sign up.

I have found that quite a few people sign up, download the book then opt out.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Im starting to think that a free gift isn't worth it.

If they like your site & info they will subscribe regardless of a free gift.

Any thoughts?

    You need to look more closely at WHY people are unsubscribing.

    Are you hammering them with offers?

    Are you providing them with exactly what you promised them on the optin page?

    Is the free information you are giving away actually valuable?

    If you add true value to people's lives then it's very unlikely they will unsubscribe.

      Hi,

      No not hammering them with offers. This opt out was 30 min after the opt in...maybe the download didnt work.

      My tech skills are basic..so I'm struggling at the moment.

    The peoples Who downloads The product and then opts out of your list means that they are interested in your product, not YOU!

    It depends on time.

    1.If the unsubscribe just after downloading the ebook or product, it means that they liked the product, not the presentation.

    If you've put the optin box on you blogs then they might think you're not so professional to guide them through making money online but you seemed to have a good product.

    2. If they optout by about 5 hours to 1 day from your list then it means you're product wasn't so good to impress the member.

    3. If the person unsubscribes after 4 to 5 months or so from joining date, It means that He has received good products and tips till now but nowadays you're selling junk and they don't want to be at your list.

    I've been in this situations and learned from it. Unsubscribers let you know what is the quality of your product and how your future products should be for upcoming optins.

      Thanks, the opt outs were within 30 minutes...all from the USA and many from something called dentistas baristas...or something odd like that.

    Find out why they are opting out. Maybe your content isn't related to the ebook. Maybe your ebook sucks or your content does. Maybe you send them too many offers. Maybe you email too often.

    Survey them. Ask them questions. Find out what they like and don't like. Test things.

    Some people will always just opt in for your freebie then not even open the first email to get it or get the ebook and never open another email, it happens. It happens less when you're not sending all your traffic directly to a squeeze page and warming them up first through your blog.

    Chrissy, do a quick search for "free weight loss ebook". Go ahead. I'll wait...

    How many did you come up with? I'll bet there's at least one comma in the number of results.

    Without seeing what you're doing, I'm going to guess that you're selling the free gift, not the emails that come afterward. So people sign up, get the freebie, and opt out.

    You want people signing up for the list to get the content, with the freebie as a bonus/sample (if you wrote it yourself).

    Yes. To some extent, you can't avoid it. It's a fact of life that some of the most dedicated freebie hunters on the planet live on the Internet.

    Another factor is where you are getting your visitors from. Some sources seem to gravitate towards freebie hunters.

    It may be that this particular free gift isn't worth it. Or maybe it's just positioned wrong. Or offered to the wrong people.

    The concept works. Right now, your execution of it does not.

    Don't get discouraged, though. Every successful business owner I've ever met has had their nose bloodied a few times. It's part of the learning process.

    Keep your chin up. If you keep at it, trying new things (like different freebies, different traffic sources, different value offers, etc. - not giving yourself a case of Shiny Object Syndrome), this does get easier. I promise...

      I will join a list for a free report or short ebook. If it delivers something of value I will stay on the list. If it is rehashed info I do not learn anything from I will eventually unsubscribe because I can only handle so many worthless emails a day.

      This is something to think about when you give away a free ebook in exchange for a person's name and email address.

    You should be setting the stage in the first email. Let them know what to expect. Currently the subscribers don't see any value in hanging around for the next email...

    So try this...

    In the first email explain to them how you will be helping them get on the right track to losing weight by sending them the best tips, exercises and weight loss products...

    End the email with "I know you are going to love the secret tip I have prepared for you in the next email..."

    This should help get some of these folks to stick around. You could also put a survey on your opt-out page to gather some data as well.

      An 'exit interview' can work very well for gathering helpful feedback.

      Two tips:

      > Make it a text box where they have to type something in. If you given them choices, they will pick one at random or the one that makes them look the best. Asking for comments doesn't let them off the hook.

      > Make it anonymous. This lets people tell the truth without fear, of either reprisals, nasty confrontations or attempts to persuade them to resubscribe.

      Most people won't bother to fill them in, but those who do can help you much more than simply staying on your list and ignoring your messages.

    Yes letting them know what they can expect in the follow up emails helps them stay on it. I have a 'In The Next Email' section in each email I send telling them what to expect next and what the email will be called plus when it will arrive, results in high open rates.
