Large video files ...Help!!

Hi fellow Warriors,

I'm building a site on Wordpress hosted on BlueHost. I plan to integrate it with OptimisePress and DAP later to create a membership site.

The site will host interviews of 45 - 60 mins duration and the file sizes will be large; around 3 - 5GB. How do I upload such large files?? Esp. since the media manager on WP does not allow anything above 10MB.

Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

First off, you'll want to compress your videos.

3-5GB is HUGE for a 45-60 minute video (unless you're having like blue ray quality)

Second, you'll (more than likely) need to host outside of BlueHost. For example, store your videos on Amazon S3.

Oh yes, you do not want to upload those files on to your server or your server resources will suffer big time.

You must use an external hosting solution and Amazon S3 is definitely the standard for that nowadays. Those are still very big files. I would look at converting them into a format where the file sizes are smaller and/or breaking them up into smaller videos.

    Hi Ironviks,

Use the free tool Handbrake - HandBrake - to re-encode your video files as .mp4 files optimized for web playback.

Then if you purchased the DAP Unlimited-site license license, you also got our S3MediaVault plugin for free, that you can use to host your media on Amazon S3, and then put a secure link to the media on your site.

It's not just video files, but we recommend that you store all media , big and small - like audio files, zip files, PDF reports, etc - on Amazon S3.

And then for added security, you would also protect the page that has the S3MV embed code, using DAP.

    Hope this makes sense.

Ravi, I am so blown away by what Handbrake can do in terms of decreasing file size without noticable decrease in quality. My 1.3 GB files are down to 0.2 GB!!

      Thank you for the recco.

I don't know what software you use but the quality of the video might suffer if you convert them from the current format (which is probably wmv or avi) to mp4.

So try to export them into H264 (mp4) format directly. You could also try FLV since those are even smaller in size.

        Hi Vikram,

Yes, I heartily endorse what has been said about HandBrake, which you can get for free at:

I've found it will shrink video files down to a third of the original size without any perceivable loss of quality.

You could also consider hosting your videos on Screencast, which is run by TechSmith, creators of Camtasia.

You get 2GB of storage and 2GB of bandwidth a month free of charge.

Then you need more, later, it's about 14 bucks a month. And they will serve up your videos so they look at their best, regardless of what device the viewer is using - smart phone ... lap top et cetera.

And, no, I'm NOT an affiliate for either of these - just a delighted user.

Good luck with your new site!

        Paul

Since WP doesn't allow files larger than 10MB, I suggest you upload it manually using a software called filezilla. You can upload it directly to your host (you need ftp account on your host) then link it in your wordpress blog.

The worst advice ever is to host these files on your own server.

      Absolute worst.

In fact it's not even an option worth considering.

Thanks WillR, I'm getting around to that point of view myself that, I'll need to host them on Amazon S3.

well then get an offshore server who doesn't care on what files you put on their servers as long its not heavy for the servers.

or upload it to filehosting sites which support streaming.

I use Optimize Press, DAP, and host my video files on Amazon S3. My work flow:

I take mov. file and optimize for web and large file at HD, and then I reduce file further in Handbrake. My settings in handbrake:

Step 1: choose iphone & ipod touch setting.
Step 2: Ensure format is MP4 and codec is H.264.
Step 3: Check "large file size" and "web optimized" (don't worry this will not change the Iphone & Ipod setting although it looks like it does.)
Step 4: Choose Advanced setting: "reference frames" at 4.
Step 5: Choose picture settings, then choose width and height with aspect ratio kept in place. Basically choose whatever ratio is good for the Optimize Press page you are using.

That's it, and my videos load super fast and never any playback issues, or download issues.

          Hope that helps!

          Be well,

          Lane

Best solusion is to host your video files on a host and stream it, Best service around the market is Amazon S3. It is free to start and give you 5GB storage and some bandwith. Most importantly you pay a very reasonable price since they charge based on the usage so at the beginnig cost is minimal.

To compress videos, Handbrake is the best optin. It is open source which is free for every one.

To upload videos you can use a plugin S3FOX organizer which is a firefox browser plugin.

See here -->How To Find And Use Online Content Storage.

You will be set once you have these three components.

It's not an issue with the server not allowing it. It is the fact that as soon as you have a few large media files being hosted and downloaded/streamed on your server by multiple users at the same time, your server resources will start to suffer greatly and so will the performance of your website(s). Some shared servers may flick you if this happens but what is most important is your users. They don't want to sit and wait whilst files take forever to download. That's why an external hosting service is a much more sensible option and really the only option nowadays... unless of course you have some seriously powerful dedicated servers. Even then I would still recommend a CDN network because the user experience will be so much better.

yes compress, but to make your life easy, get easy video suite which hooks to amazon s3, export a high res file, drageit on the desktop uploader and it takes care of the compression, I do this with on hour webinars and they play smooth. Easier than fiddling with handbrake etc. pm if you want to see an example.
