I wanna cut my cost as much as possible. its going to be a private forum..

My Req..

2. Nice UI
3. rating system
4. polls
5. smooth and ajax basic UI (basic ajax will do)
6. strong security and spam protection
7. good availability of addons/mods

vB will be my last option considering its too costly and resource intensive..

If you attach the forum to a Wordpress site, then simple press would be my recommendation.

If on the other hand, you can't do that. I have used simple machines in the past and found it to be quite a nice script.

I'm afraid your choices for a free forum script are limited. You could use any forum that was reliable, functional and maybe pay some one a small amount to change some colours here, add a different icon set and that could make a huge difference.

P.s I don't know if I a telling you the obvious or not here, but many forum scripts allow you to upload a theme, if the script is popular, there's likely going to be lots of nice ready made themes for you to experiment with.

For free forum softwares, Mybb was preferred by an amazing margin.

Announcing Best Forum Software of 2012 | Forum Software Reviews

For paid, don't go with VB. It has been going downhill. People recommending it don't seem to notice that this forum uses version 3.8.7. The 4.xx versions have been out for about 2 years now, and are they ever clunky compared to this forum.

A lot of very large forums have switched from VB to XenForo - Compelling Community Forum Software. One comment after another from the forum owners mentions how much better it is than VB.

    Thanks Lloyd...

I've actually been hanging around VB Forum reading about their new VB5.
I didn't even know about WF, I thought it was on Version 4.

    I'll check out xenforo...

That's an easy assumption to make, but if you check the source code of this page, in line 2 is:

      Code:
      <meta name="generator" content="vBulletin 3.8.7" />
Webhostingtalk.com also stuck with 3.8.7. That's 2 forums by some of the most web savvy people around. It also works very well compared to a 4.xx like bikeforums.net.

vbulletin is probably the industry standard for big forums. It depends how far you want it to grow. I have used simple Wordpress forums (Mingle forums) for customer support purposes and they worked fine but for bigger forums I probably wouldn't rely on something as simple as a Wordpress solution. What happens when they lose interest and stop updating the plugin? That's the problem with free tools. They have no incentive to keep it going and going.

VBulletin however has been around for a long time and are an actual business that charges money for their products so they have a much more stable business model. So don't be afraid to spend money if it gives you better piece of mind.
