Estimating volume from affiliate program?

How does one go about estimating the lead or sales volume an affiliate program could drive for an online product?

I'm helping a friend set-up and run an affiliate program for a premium wordpress plugin and while I have very high hopes, I'd like to actually have a realistic projection/goal for the first 6 months.

Are there tools people use, or specific formulas?

    I guess there is intuition and the feel you get.
    I think that even that though comes from
    comparing how other like products have launched
    or failed. Of course if you have a product that is
    similar to something else then you would also need to consider
    how well that other product does at satisfying its need in the market place
    and whether or not your product is just a copy or does it fulfill a significant
    need that is separate from the other products brand position. If so how
    important is your brand position with in the market place?

    Once you got all that it is important that you have it packaged right with the
    right graphics and copywrite; then move it with the right kind of relevant advertising.
