Hi RebeccaLyn

I don't know if this will help but only last week I needed to put quite a few videos on a clients web page, I discovered that it was best to use flash. I'm sure there are plenty of pieces of software out there that will do the job but I was in a hurry so didn't have much time to look around the Internet. I ended up going to a site through a blog post.

You can Click Here to go to the site I went too or have a look around for flash software.

Personally I think you need to use flash video because; Maybe it will help you.

A) flash seems to be the most popular format

B) it compresses your file to a more acceptable file size for loading on a web page

For me it was really easy to use and it didn't cost a lot, although I'm sure that there will be free software out there somewhere if you look or that someone on this forum can point you to.

I agree with Monk, just upload to youtube and grab the embed code. Seems to be the fastest and easiest. Good luck, Mike

I (usually) simply use youtube videos (for my sites and blogs). Meaning that if I want a self recorded video on my site or blog I simply film it, upload it to youtube (or anything similar) and paste the code of the youtube player in the html code.

Converting WMV will often create a lot bigger file as it does all sorts of conversions. If you have Camtasia you can add it in there and then recompile which will still keep the size small.

Recompiling will always do a much better job than converting.

You can also embed your wmv video inside your webpage quite easily if you want to. The only people who you will miss are the mac users.

There are also a lot better public video sites to upload to that will maintain the quality far better than youtube.

If its going on your front page however I would never use public video sites as people can click away to easily.

Not sure what all conversions it will do but I have used a free converter "Prism" that converted some video so I COULD put them on YouTube. Might be worth a shot. I found it by doing a Google search for video file converters or free video file converters.

Hi Rebecca,

To get the best quality and a small file size, the best bet is to go back to the original video - before it was encoded as a WMV file. Then encode this original video as Flash video (.flv).

If this is a video someone else created and you don't have access to the original video, my favorite conversion software is MPEG Streamclip. Just Google that name to download it for free.

I would just upload all the videos to YouTube and use their embed feature. If you have a WordPress blog, there's a few plugins you should take a look at: smart-youtube and tubepress are a couple.

Hi Rebecca,

The price (and many people don't know this) of using YouTube
is that streaming is often choppy for viewers on wireless connections.

For this reason in general I prefer to self-host for my direct-response
videos. There are hassles with self-hosting, but I can size the file
so it gives the best balance of fast-streaming and getting my message
across.

The best standard for streaming videos is .FLV. The best codec for
most stuff is VP6 - it's proprietary which means you cannot get a
converter for VP6 for free. You can get it for about $40 here:

I JUST put my first flash video up yesterday. Had no idea what I was doing. I thought I was home free once I got the .flv file made, courtesy of my brother. Thought I could just put in the link. Nope.

After about four hours of Googling and trying stuff, I tried Coffeecup's Web Video Player. (I already use their HTML editor). Bingo. First try.

BTW, in my search I found out about RIVA, which is free and converts to .flv from all sorts of formats.

Have you tried the Amazon S3 service? It allows you to host your videos on Amazon and the bandwidth is really huge at a pretty low price. It does take some technical know how however.
Regarding YouTube the video quality is not that good, you can try DailyMotion or other similar video sites where the quality is better than YouTube.

I've used a number of different services but like uploading to Vimeo the best. Then you can create one page websites using iWeb (if you're on the Mac) or even TrafficGeyser has a very good sales page offer. If you use Vimeo make sure you pay attention to their compression guidlines. That will reduce the number of people who have difficulty watching your stuff.

If your videos are longer or larger in file size, I recommend you upload them to Vimeo, not YouTube, for better performance, look and feel (and it helps that YouTube has a length limit and Vimeo doesnt seem to)...then simply copy and paste the "embed" code into the html of your site.

Vimeo states that you agree to their terms which states "It is not a commercial, infomercial or other type of advertisement. Vimeo is for personal, non-commercial use only."

Is this not a problem using Vimeo if you are marketing a product?

Another consideration is bandwidth.
Regardless of the video format, video coming off your own hosted site while folks are viewing the clip will add to your bandwidth usage.
Services like Youtube, etc.. have the advantage that these do eat into your bandwidth.
