How do I promote a musician?

I have just taken on a new client who is a upcoming making dance artist which is a different direction for me as I usually deal with small businesses and information product launches. My usual method is content marketing but I am not sure if this would be as effective for dance music.

I am building him a website and social media pages as well as a you tube channel , is this enough or are there any other avenues I could explore? His music is on sound cloud and recieving a lot of attention.

What is the goal? Are you trying to get the client signed to a deal? Or what.
Basically if you are trying to help them get signed you need to almost get that client to a point where they don't need to be signed. This means they need to have a ton of rabid fans buying what they have to offer.

To generate a buzz, get involved in social media sites including Youtube, Twitter, Facebook etc. Cultivate fans and get them to spread the word with an "online" street team.

Keep in mind that social media sites come and go. So drive the bulk of traffic back to the artist's website where you can offer info on tours, sell goods etc.
Do not build your presence only on social media sites. Build a solid foundation for your client.

Be sure to start an email list. ReverbNation offers good ones for musicians. And the first x amount of subscribers are free. They also offers some cool tools.

I think for musicians, the best marketing place is the social media. Make an impressive page with some of his good work and drive some traffic on it.
If you are looking for organic traffic then youtube will be your best option. Add some youtube videos or make a youtube channel for him, linking it with the website. As youtube videos are ranking crazy on google you will get instant traffic. In addition to that you need some ways to monetize the traffic too but i think this will be for later ....

Like Salman said the best marketing for musicians is social media. Make a business plan to grow their social profiles, facebook, twitter, soundcould, etc. If your artist can do a remix, or a really good version of a popular song, what you could do is get it ranked high in youtube search results. That is a easy way to grow youtube page and other social profiles.

  • As a hobby I'm a recording artist myself - Facebook is a great tool for networking and Facebook Ads worked quite well for gaining fans if you use the proper demographics the artist is attempting to target. This my fan page if it helps any with ideas: facebook.com/sevenandvitto. Bottom line it's all about the fans.

    Hi Susan,

    Have you tried SoundLift?

A lot of musicians and bands promote their tracks there ... your client will need to create a page and post some free tracks, but it gives them a link to their band page from the SoundLift profile page ...

Treat it the same way as a typical marketing project: produce content in the form of articles, videos, podcasts, etc and build an audience of subscribers that like his music and want to (insert special incentive here). You know what I'm saying? Whether your an artist, musician, or publisher...the process is the same.

Since Social Media has already been mentioned, how about PureVolume or ArtistLaunch?

You might want to give content locking a shot. It can help your client generate some extra revenue. It can work for musicians, artists, app makers and anyone who can create unique content and has a traffic source. Have you looked into content locking? Most people are unfamiliar, so let me know if you need more info.

Content marketing still woks for musicians, these guides show that:

Get them on websites in their niche, via interviews and exclusive song features. Not sure if your contract covers this, but maybe also help get them gigs. But like LilBlackDress said, it'll depend on the aim.

    Hi Susan,
Google Harvey Segal. Believe me, he has a basic philosophy of internet marketing that is down to earth and real and will last forever. Best of luck.
