Would you pay over $2000 just FOR A DOMAIN NAME

Now I know there is talk in many places, including on this forum of course, about how do I get a good domain name and how much do I need to pay for a good domain name.

Well as you know I write quite a few guides about the internet and I was considering writing one about how you can still pick up good domain names cheaply.

And that brings me to one of the reasons for this post.

Like many others I have a few websites and have collected but not used a number of other domain names.

Now I know that domain value estimates are often thought of as not being accurate but when for example every estimate site I try values a particular dot com of mine at $2000 plus and I bought this one in 2011 just for a few dollars I wondered what would get me most value for this.

Should I write another guide about buying and selling dot coms and buy one or a few new ones to show you can still get good dot coms cheap and sell them for profit or should I just sell this particular domain name and concentrate on other guides I am always working on.

Only if you're site is already making good money and it's time to start to invest back into it. I'd just start on a cheap 10 dollar domain until it's actually making money. The domain name itself isn't everything and you can always come up with some cheap 10 dollar word combination that is adaquate for when your just starting.

If I'm understanding your question correctly you are asking if you should write a guide telling people how they can make money buying and selling domains, based on the fact that several estimate sites value your domain at $2k.

If you really know anything about buying and selling domains you will KNOW just how ridiculous those estimate sites are.

What will this tell your customers about your knowledge and skills?

Give me the domain seriously, do you need capital to start a project? If you do then sell it, your problem is, you only have one domain (as far as I know) which has yielded you this profit. That isn't grounds to create a guide on, then, there is the question is there a market for the guide (I'm sure there is but research tells you that). Before you sell it, do your research.

That's putting it terribly mildly, Ricky, if you'll excuse the comment. Those of us who routinely sell domain-names tend to think of those "estimates" more as "pure fiction" than just "not accurate".

What will get you the most money for it would doubtless be having a pool of potential customers for it who believe in "website valuations" of domain-names! But they're not going to be too easy to find, unfortunately, in that sort of price-bracket. The reality is that a domain is worth what you can sell it for, and that depends almost entirely on your own skills at identifying and approaching potential customers to whose businesses it may have additional, artificial value. The key concept to appreciate is that domain-names don't, in themselves, have any value above and beyond their registration-fees. It's only domain vendors' skills and market forces that make it appear so.

I wish you good luck with it, however/whenever you decide to dispose of it.

I wouldn't, myself. But that isn't my business model, with domaining. I never pay more than reg-fee. That model suits me, because if I make plenty of mistakes, I can easily afford effectively to throw away or give away what I don't manage to sell. I rarely sell them for more than $150 or so, it's true ...
