Lowest cost to renew a domain name?

Hi All,

I must get off of GoDaddy! They are charging $14.99 to renew our domains. I know there are lower companies out there. We don't have a site or anything on them yet so it's just the domain. Can anyone recommend a company where I can transfer and renew my domains for MUCH CHEAPER? THANKS!

    @nmh, I been using domainsite.com for a long time, I think a domain is like 10.99 or 11.99 with whois protection for a com. I really can't stand ShitDaddy and If I was millionaire I would pay people to get off godaddy haha.

    Doing support for scripts and dealing with their crappy host support has really turned me off Godaddy, only good thing is the chicks they pay a lot of money so suck the geeks in.

      I just checked out domainsite.com and noticed that their .tv channels are $11.49. I just paid $39 at GoDaddy. Thanks for this information.

    There are plenty of horror stories about GoDaddy - I use NameCheap for my registrar. You can usually find coupon for the initial purchase (no coupons for renewals). Renewals are around 10.00 - can remember the cents with that 10 dollars.

    They are VERY responsive and you can get them on the phone.

      Renewals are normally about $10, I think?

      I use Namecheap. I know they're not quite the cheapest, but their customer service is really impressive, and when you're as clueless and incompetent with "techie stuff" as I am, that matters.

      And as Gail says, never register where you host.

        Why the edit ? I don`t, because of the prices, but why not ? what happens ?
        It's always good advice to keep your domain registration and hosting separate. Because, if you fall out with your web host you can move to another host and if you fall out with your domain registrar you can move that, too.

        But it becomes a bit more tricky if both are with the same company.

        Always remember 'one' is a fatal number where business is concerned: always have more than ... one customer, one payment processor, one business plan et cetara ...

    I know a lot of people don't like GoDaddy but I've never had a problem with them. However, I only use them for domains and not hosting, which I've heard can be a bit iffy.

    I've never paid the asking price for renewals. There are always discount coupons available which give you about 30% discount.

    The discount brings the price down to near $10 which is about the going rate for a .com. If you get email renewal reminders, which normally start about three months before renewal, then you should have had some discount codes included in those emails.

    Here's a code which they sent me a couple of days ago, which is good for 30% off the price of renewal for .com .net and .org - code gd3424b

      I have used namecheap in the past and they are on my NO NEVER AGAIN list. They are not an ICANN accredited registrar. They are actually a reseller for eNom, so when you do a whois it shows it's registered through namecheap AT eNom.
      When you do anything there it has to get passed on to eNom and I experienced delays and failures their interface with eNom. When you think you have paid to register a domain an namecheap, if somebody registers it elsewhere before they successfully pass the information to eNom, you are out of luck on the domain name, but they do give you a prompt refund.

      As far as godaddy, just google Mike Filsaime godaddy and you'll get a couple of screenfulls of how godaddy will disable your domain for one complaint, even if unfounded.

      My recommendation is name.com. I have been using them for about three years and never had any problems. I have used nodaddy, namecheap and netfirms in the past and now have my 50+ domains at name.com
      When I checked their .com: $8.25 for transfers --- $9.25** for new and renewals they have a free privacy if you use a coupon code. "PRIVACYPLEASE"

      **When you are buying anything there check at http://www.retailmenot.com/view/name.com for current discount codes. You cannot use 2 coupons in one transaction, so buy/renew a domain with a coupon and then immediately go back and get the whois privacy.

    Yeah, typically a lot of domain companies give you a free domain or charge a low fee such as 1.99, etc. Then when you renew it's quite a bit more..

    NameCheap is a privatelabel of enom and enom is what I use they are the best. Crapdaddy is bad very bad the main reason they belive they have the right to close you down if 1 person complains just listen to Mike Filsaime talk about it they shut his domain down from 1 spam complaint, plus if you are into politics I can go on an on. I just hate people who do stuff like this and enom does not at least I would rather pay more for enom, i know you get 1dollar domains from daddy but they they get you on the backend not that they charge more but if you mess up you might live to regret it

    find any registrar which offers transfer with coupon code, may be $2 and transfer the domain to that registrar.

    Simplest way to solve the problem.

    1. Go to Google.com
    2. Search, "godaddy domain renewal coupon [month] [year]" --> improvise if you need discounts for others ie. "godaddy 295 domain coupon [month] [year]" Just along these lines, you can my point.
    3. Copy the code (you obviously need to do your own research and test a few codes until one works, I usually browse through a 3-4 sites to find one, sometimes faster)
    4. Done.

    Thats how I get my Godaddy discounts, works like a charm every time.

    Something you can do for Godaddy is install Honey as a Firefox add-on. When you put the domain in your cart, click on the orange "find savings" button, and it will cycle though all the available coupons without you having to go out and look for them.

    Right now the cheapest it's giving me is $2.95, but I've recently gotten 0.99 and 1.99 for new domains. Renewals, not sure, but the honey add-on will search those codes too.

    They are from 30% to 35% off, can be applied to renewal too.. I have used many times...

    New idea - renewing names in bulk at GoDaddy brings down the price to $10.21 each. I tested this idea today (6-30-2014). I'm a web designer in Orlando and was frustrated with GoDaddy's higher priced renewals, up to $14.99 per name. I was used to paying $8-9 each renewal. Then, I tried something new this evening. Instead of renewing just names that expire in the next 30 days, I had selected a total of 29 domains to renew. The shopping cart figured a price of $9.99 each name plus some ICANN taxes. When I took the total order and divided by 29 names, the net price was $10.21 each. This may only work for web designers like me, who store the names of many clients, but I just wanted everyone to know that there is another way to get a reasonable rate of about $10 for domain renewals.

    Yea.. If you are registering a new domain name I will advise you register with Godaddy as they have the cheapest coupon codes I have seen. I have bought several domains for $1 or $2.

    But renewal is really expensive at $14.99 which is more like a payback....

    SO i will advice you transfer your domain to another registrar before it expires... I usually transferr to namecheap at around $8.

    I have never had any issue doing it this way..

    Besides their price hikes, and recently the lack of coupons or codes... The main thing that really ticks me off about GoDaddy (God Addy) is -- their RENEWAL prices are much higher than their TRANSFER or NEW prices. This is extortion. The cost of a NEW domain should be the same as a RENEWAL. The cost of a RENEWAL should not me more than a TRANSFER. Jeez, THEIR own internal cost for NEW and TRANSFER is HIGHER than RENEWAL, they actually provide far less service and overhead is less for them to RENEW a domain.

    The best way to save money when renewing is to transfer AWAY from Godaddy!

    I am moving domains to NAMECHEAP.com away from GoDaddy because of their pricing model.

    NAMECHEAP is far better, and cheaper.

    We use adomainname4you.com, they are very cheap for most domain names.

    If not, we normally look at 1&1, although we have had some bad experiences with them, so we don't use them as often.

    I started with Network Solutions (NetSol) back around 1995. Then I switched to HostGator out of convenience (expecting quicker propagation since that's where I'm hosted). When I told NetSol I wanted to move all my domains, they dropped their price to just $10.99/year. Very good, responsive tech support--real humans available 24/7.

    Plus, I like NetSol's UI for domains--it's real easy to see what's expiring when. Much more difficult with HostGator's UI. I had been a NetSol VIP customer for a while (and I only had a handful of domains there), but I only just became aware of the $10,99 rate recently. By the way, you cannot get this rate online--you have to call--even if you're a VIP customer. They've been around since the beginning of the Internet, and were once the sole registrar of .coms, so I expect they'll probably be around for a while more.

    I know most of you are going with either namechiep.com or dynadot.com. But you should really try out namesilo.com. They charge only $9.95 for a .com renewal. Accualy all of their TLD renewals are lower than $10 I guess.

    Also they are so cheap! Cheapest I have ever see if you think about the free Whois privacy and ICANN prices. Just go try it out.

    Yes I used to buy through GoDaddy, that is before I knew of the other much cheaper options out there. If you are looking for bells and whistles then GoDaddy is probably for you (but costs more) Namecheap for me is fairly cheap initially and recurring.

    One little tip for everyone registering domains for the first time. If possible, register for longer periods ie. 5 years as opposed to 1 year. Google recognizes domains that are registered for longer intervals and will reward them higher (Simply because there is a higher likelihood of greater investment into the domain, and won't be as likely to be abandoned after the 1st year re-registration comes due)

    Wow, a lot of different user experiences here shared which is great I'm definitely going to check out a couple of registrars mentioned here that I haven't heard of before.

    As far as my experience goes, I just renewed 3 of my domains at name cheap which were about $13.00 each including whois guard.

    Also of note, I saw that they charge just under 8 bucks to transfer domains over from GoDaddy.

    Bitharbor.io is doing one free domain registration per hosting service signed up for. If you register for their web hosting services for each domain, they don't charge for the domain registration.

    Ok, this is what I do...

    First off I use NameCheap because it's the cheapest registrar I've found...

    Second, when it's time to renew, I search for "namecheap promo code" and then search only for the results within the last week. That way, only the freshest most reliable promo codes that actually work are easily found within the first 2 or 3 sites that are presented to me.

    I have transferred most of the expiring domain names from Godaddy to Namesilo. I find Namesilo is good for the affordability when it comes to registration, renewal, parking, free who-is privacy and the interface is also very easy to understand.

    I will say, go with either Namesilo or Dynadot....... they are good for affordability.....

    However, I use Godaddy Auctions to sell domain names, which are with Namesilo and Dynadot. It is a little problematic to transfer a domain name when it is sold in Godaddy Auction........... if the domain name is not registered with Godaddy.

    Transferring to another registrar is a good way to save some bucks. It's really useful if you have many domains under management.
