Best service for e-mail list?

I have a few websites that are getting some decent traffic now and I am thinking about letting people subscribe to an e-mail list. I want one that I can add as a widget to wordpress. Are there any that are fairly basic and free to use? Thanks in advance.

I use Contact Form 7. It's free, basic, and very easy to set up. Works fine for me.

No, not a contact form. For example, user comes to my website and wants to subscribe to my mailing list, I sent out updates once every few weeks or so. I just want something where they can signup on my website via an easy widget I can add. Know what I mean?

In my opinion, there is no point of getting a free service.

I've dealt with some and the results were less than desired.

The go-to services for me are:

    Aweber
    GetResponse
    Trafficwave

All are super affordable to get started with, allow effective and reliable followups/broadcasts, and have forms that can easily be placed into widgets.

It's well worth the investment for the potential of the service and how it can help grow your site!

Are we talking one time fees or pay so much per month? My sites don't make enough money to justify 20 bucks a month or whatever.

They are all monthly fees. You can pay for Aweber or GetResponse for the year, but I don't recommend it.

They all start at around 20 and up per month.

I'm really not sure of any other services I could honestly recommend.

MailChimp has their forever free option, but you can't do any follow up emails unless you upgrade to paid. They also freak out and close accounts who promote affiliate links.

Mad Mimi is another option, but again the free accounts don't allow follow up emails.

I'm not sure exactly what you need of course, but follow ups are gold to me.

What exactly is a follow up email? I just need something that allows people to subscribe to my mailing list and allows me to email my subscribers whenever I update the blog. Nothing to fancy.

Follow ups are emails you can pre-load into the system that go out at specified intervals.

You can showcase your core content and whatever else you might need.

Anyways, Mad Mimi (free) might be worth checking out as they allow you to import your blog's RSS feed and automatically email subscribers when you update your blog.

OR you could just manually email if you wanted to make it more personal.

    Hope that helps!

You could always incorporate feedburner on your blog and offer a "subscribe" form for free. If this isn't your forte... pony up the $1, then $19 for Aweber. Can't go wrong with it.

    I wouldn't suggest using a free autoresponder
service, but their are a few (that I know of)
    that are pretty basic:

    Aweber
    Trafficwave
    Getresponse

With all three you can simple copy and paste
the Java Script/HTML code into an HTML
widget in Wordpress. Also, Wordpress has a
stand alone widget strictly for Aweber opt in
forms. Good to see that you're focus is on
    list building.

Aweber is the industry standard and will allow you to create web forms you can paste into your blog.

Mailchimp is awesome, and you can have up to 2000 subscribers with the free account.

Awebz has always been my favorite, even after getting my feet wet with a lot of the other ones.

When starting I wanted to save a few bucks so I went with MailChimp. I built a list, was excited and was making a few bucks so decided to go with AWeber.

I get my AWeber account and ask them "how do I import my MailChimp list to AWeber?" Their response was "you need to get your list to opt in to an AWeber form."

I don't have to tell you how few people will opt in to a new list as a favor. It's not going to happen.

Moral of the story: If you think you're going with a paid service at any point in your life, start with a paid service.

That said, some email services do allow you to import lists from another service. You can research this if you think you'll migrate down the road, but I believe the consensus is to just start with a paid service right off the bat.
