Amazon Tax Withholding

Hi Everyone.

I hope some of you in here got the info I am looking for and can help me.

I live in Europe and I have already sent in a w8 for both my kindle book and createspace book (After attaining an EIN). This is working perfectly and they no longer withhold my taxes.

However, I had some income before the EIN kicked in and I have just recieved 2 letters for last years income called "foreign person's U.S source income subject to withholding". Now, my EIN is included in these letters and it says "total withholding credit 50.85 USD" on one of them and 141.49 USD on the other.

I am guessing that I can get this money somehow since I have an EIN and the EIN is even on these 2 letters. I wrote amazon asking about it and they said that I should write the US IRS in order to get a refund. Is this money that I am going to recieve or is it just an information letter? It is hard for me to decipher?

Any help is really appreciated.

I have no knowledge of the us tax system, and could not offer any tax advice.

I read on a blog somewhere that to reclaim past withholdings you need to fill out a us tax return. I don't know if this is correct, but I sounds plausible. Ig you are non us, you are going to have a judgement about how much effort it is worth going to to recover what might be a relatively small amount of money.

You need to apply to the IRS for an international tax number. You can do it via phone, fax or letter.

Once you have that you need to fill out a document and send it to amazon.

I can give more information if anyone needs it, but no point getting the links if nobody cares

    Hi,

Since January 2013, any taxes withheld that are not claimed by having the EIN number etc will NOT be paid to foreigners from the sales of books in the USA. That means that any taxes withheld to you prior to giving Amazon your EIN and being registered will not be paid back I'm afraid.

Up until December last year, you could still claim it in the given year but apparently the IRS has changed its way of approaching the withholding and payment of sales tax for foreigners. I'm not sure if this is for all products, but it is for books (including Kindle).

Hope that was of some help!

EDIT: Do however consult a tax consultant for best advice though as I'm not a tax expert nor am I certified to give advice
