Buying Website Vs. Creating From Scratch!

I just read through this great debate on Empire Flippers. Chris Guthrie and Spencer Haws debate over which is better Buying Websites or Creating Websites from Scratch. Thought I share it on the forum for anyone who hasn't read it. Lots of great info and interesting perspectives. Before reading I preferred creating from scratch, now I think buying is way better.

Debate: Buying Sites Vs. Building Sites

What do you think is better?

Either way you pay. You pay with cash or your time. It depends on which is more valuable to you.

Plus, when you buy it's already producing income so you know the keyword selection was good, ranking is ok and copy converts (whatever is applicable).

Interesting article, for quotes like this:

That forum went on to hit over 500,000 page views per month (booyah!) and yet I only ever made $500 per month from Adsense with it (lame).
Each visitor was worth a tenth of a cent. (That's why they call it AdCents.) Don't mind me, some days it doesn't take much to amuse me.

It's usually rare when there is a site pre-built with your specifications. Unless you just want to make money from ANY kind of website then flippa may have some gems there for you

I am creating a WP website right now and it does takes time but you will know every tweaks and also how to configure layouts, plugins etc. and its fun creating your own site from scratch.

But if I get a really good and affordable site that I like and which have potential, then I won't hesitate getting it.

If you're starting out with your very first site, pay your dues and create your own...the best way to learn is through trial and error/repetition. The more you do, the more you learn, and only then can you start to buy sites...

If i had the money to buy the website that i'm interested with, i'd rather buy than to make website from scratch. It takes time to see result. If you don't have time to do it, you can outsource your work (writing articles, SEO).

If you've got the money to invest and do your due diligence, buying a site that is already getting traffic and making revenue can save you a lot of time and work. You can build your own site, but that's just the beginning. You have to promote it and keep adding unique content, get traffic and monetize it.

Just depends on whether or not you'd like to spend the time or spend the money.

  • For my opinion, it's always best to use money than your time.
So go for it on Flippa, and you are sure it has a good PR, the keywords are optimized for traffic, it has followers and visitors, the contents ready and much more...

If you start from zero, you have to like the niche, otherwise after a few days the site will stop to grow. And then you have to carefully select the keywords, write optimal articles, keep visitors entertained, do internal and external SEO, and so on. This will take up a lot of time, and you are not sure to reach success at the end.

So buy a website for Flippa, apply to grow it, and at least resell that one after a year.

    See you soon!

    Thanks for the mention, OP!

The comments on the post are pretty interesting as are the varying opinions here. I thought the "build" supporters would heavily outnumber the "buy" supporters, but that really wasn't the case.

    It was a great read.

I think that the hardest part of building a website is in the beginning. You start from nothing and somehow have to get traffic.

If you buy a site, the traffic and income is already there, you just have to improve upon those aspects. That is why I prefer to buy sites rather than start my own.

I think it is easier to buy a website that is already established and making money than building your own.

I personally think that creating the website from scratch is better. It may take a lot more of your time, but you know it's going to be just the way you like it, more "you" than any bought site!

Buying a ready-to-earn website is very easy for those who have some money. But they don't learn all the developmental skills, all the technicalities that involve in the process.

There has been a lot of debate about it and there always will be. But one who has made up their mind for IM, they better learn everything involved in the process by themselves.

Skills that you learn from your own experience pay off big time when outsourcing or buying.

You buy a house or apartment once in a life, or may be twice so you don't bother learning how to build your own house in x days? In IM industry it is different from real estate industry. You make websites as per potential idea coming to your mind, and you do that ASAP!

    Adios,

I would say either way is better.
Provided that at the end of it all i get what i want on the site,i won't mind much on whether to start it from scratch or buy a ready one
    Thanks though for the share!

Some of the best websites in my portfolio are ones that have really good content. Content was written by people who have first hand experience in the niche. There was little link building/promotion done but the traffic grew on its own. How ever you can get your hands on good content is what will pave the way for a digital portfolio worth owning.
