Doubt about installing wordpress manually

Hello, I was thinking in downloading the wordpress software to my personal computer and then upload it to my host (hostgator)

The doubt is I want to upload it compressed and uncompress it in the hosting instead of in my computer, so that said, I see in wordpress.org two versions, one "tar.gz" and the "zip". Does these two versions would work in the same way or there is any difference?

  • Is there a reason you are choosing not to do the one click instal via hostgator? It only takes a minute.
However, if you want to do it as you described, simply pick the zip file and extract it in your cpanel.

The reason is I have read that have some security advantages (which I don't know yet if true or not) and also I think is good to learn that way as well

Thanks for your reply, and you say I have to pick the zip, and the "tar.gz" what is for? Just curious

I figured a zip file is probably more familiar to you and easier to unzip if you already own a standard unzip utility. The tar.gz file would be ok as well to use if you are just downloading and uploading right away to your linux server and extracting it from there. But if planning to extract it on a windows pc it already gives me a headache just looking at the instructions just to unzip it.

As for security advantages between the easy instal and the longer way around depends on your host and whether they are on top of things. In the past a host provider’s one-click install included a vulnerability which led to thousands of WordPress blogs being hacked, and I think the paranoia still lingers.

Personally I would choose the easy way, instead of having to mess with a bunch of steps, but as you said, it's good to learn and that is admirable.

Just a word of advice: ALWAYS INSTALL YOUR WORDPRESS SITES MANUALLY

Without doubt, one-click install method can be effortless and very time-saving, however at the same time, it actually expose your WordPress site to multiple security loop holes.

    Here's why:
    1. One-click installer creates database for you and it usually named it wrdp1 or wrdp2, which means it actually makes your site much more easier to hack (since the hackers already know your database name).
    2. One-click installer automatically add a prefix of wp_ to your tables. This is common knowledge to hackers as well, and they can use it to hack your site.
    3. One-click installer might install the older version of WordPress into your site (instead of the latest version).

Manual installation isn't that complicated as most think. In fact, you'll find it very easy once you know how.

Totally agree! Choose .zip for better windows compatibility. .tar.gz is common unix format but you can decompress it with free 7zip archive manager.

  • I trust ArielT will do just fine uploading those files, creating a database, and editing the config file.

You can upload both type of extensions .zip and tar.gz to your hostgator filemanager. Since hostgator provides c panel hosting, so, you can upload your zip files directly to your filemanager and then extract it with the options available in filemanager. It is much easier than uploading to through FTP. Just try it.

Advanced users always install on local system, customize and finally upload back to the live environment. It is a lot easier to edit templates / test plugins etc on local system. But there are issues with editing the config settings etc for the database and domain name, which would be different in both environments. Make sure that you have some idea about what you are doing.

extract the .zip to your computer into a folder, upload that folder inside the root or how your ftp is created, run the config file and that's it
