Setting up an entertainment guide website

Hi guys,

I live in a city of about 4 million people and was thinking of setting up a website that would be a comprehensive guide to the local cafe scene.

It would be a high-quality site - photos, reviews, and some feature articles. Most of the other sites in this space are ugly, incomplete or not well-rounded (ie. only feature small tidbits of info).

A lot of the ads that I see on sites are very unattractive, so I would hesitate to use them given that they would cheapen the look of what I hope would be a good-looking site.

So I would like to know the best way of going about monetizing the site while still retaining some aesthetic value. A site that I take some design inspiration from is Live For The Funk© but I have no idea how they make any money from the site?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once you get traffic, you can approach local businesses to place their ads on your site. You will also notice as you get traction businesses will ask you to feature them on your site, so you can have a featured section and that could be a paid spot.

My question would be - are you in business to make a pretty site, or to make money?

That site has a store, but I'd be surprised if it is making a lot of money, and it certainly doesn't appear to be achieving its potential to me.

      Thanks for the responses.

Well I think more people are likely to visit a site of this kind if it was well designed and not chock-a-block with ads. So the traffic would increase - but I just don't know how sites that are well designed are able to turn their high traffic into money whilst continuing to avoid ugly ads.
