This is for the older more experienced marketers who have been in the game longer than Facebook has been around. I was just struck with a some curiosity after i was thinking about Facebook, their PPC ads, and i wondered, how was PPC before Facebook? For IMers it's most commonly used for PPC ads. The site was created in '04 and i have no idea when Facebook started allowing users to create PPC ad campaigns. All i do know is that ut was something from '06 - '08?Google Adwords didn't take off until '01-'02, but i assume the conversions were crap. So before PPC ads were a thing, what was your primary traffic source? Please enlighten me...

In those days as an entrepreneur, a common strategy was to build a website and once you received significant traffic, you would get others to put big ugly banners on your pages advertising their website in exchange for income.

Visa versa, as a marketer looking to advertise, you would ask a website owner how much they would charge to place your big ugly banner on their site for a period of time.

Online Ad banner networks have been around for a while as well.
