Hi Guys!

I have a new Wordpress blog, and have been getting comments from spammers from about the second day my blog went live . Is there a way to block them?

I know the feeling, I was getting pretty frustrated about this myself till recently.
I have a big site that was getting no less than 20+ spam comments a day hitting my inbox even with captcha plugins I was using etc. until I came across conditional captcha which seems to be working a treat and has almost eradicated my spam problems entirely. These are the stats in just a few days of usage:

1,245 spam comments have been blocked by Conditional CAPTCHA.

It seems to be working for me so far.

I'm surprised it took that long.

I installed both Akismet and Bad Behavior plugins, and the spam stopped almost instantly.

    Hi everyone,

I also have spam comments on my blogs but
I try to reduce it to few by aksimet and catcha box

It is helpful but the spam comments are unavoidable
So lets keep it at a small level

All the best and see you on top

Question for gurus: what is the advantage of allowing comments? Is there a good reason to leave comments enabled in WP? If all you are doing is delivering information to your visitors (and incidentally monetizing the site with affiliate offers + ads) is there any reason why comments should be enabled in the first place?

The comments you want to get will do a few things for you...

      > They can add depth to your information as commenters add their own opinions, experiences and expertise.

      > They can give you a chance to interact with real visitors and spark valuable discussions.

      > This can lead to links from related blogs and websites.

      > Ongoing discussions also yield updated content without you having to post anything.

The downside is dealing with marketers and SEO types who view your digital property as theirs to use as they please. Hence the discussion about spam comments.

You can pretty much stop the automated trash, but you still have to deal with live visitors littering your site with their garbage. Moderate comments, and be ruthless about marking spam and blocking them. Your legit readers will thank you...

First thing to do is to change settings so that only comments that you approve would show on your blog. Also I noticed not all comments as wordpress marks as spam are in fact spam. So you need to go through all of them in order to find genuine comments. Also when I set settings to approve/decline every comment manually I started getting less spam comments in fact.

Do I have to pay for the API key for akismet? I went to sign up, but it looks like you have to pay first.

Thanks for all the great tips! I will have to try some of these and see if I can put an end to this. This spam thing is kind of distracting, especially when you are trying to focus on creating great content.

I simply disallow comment after getting tired of spam. But dont forgot that most or at least many of webmaster is trying to spam all over the internet for links. Backlinks campaign as they are used of too many webmaster sucks.
They call it "make it look natural links" but before you can blink eye they blast thousand of links with "one push button software"

Ranking is backlinking = Spammer will always be there

Hi Jaba. I resisted using Captchas on my blogs for many months, until the spam just got too much. On one of my blogs, which ended up on someone's list of "do follow links" blogs, I was getting 400 a day, even with Akismet.

Although I hated doing it, I installed a Captcha, and little spam gets through now.

So, that's my solution for you. Others' mileage will vary. :-) Good luck with it, don't let it annoy you too much. Concentrate on blogging.

    Cheers

Akismet works great, but I recently started using Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin. Creates a small checkbox that needs to be ticked to confirm you're not a bot.
    Works like a charm!
