Coaching options (skype) - is 'voice' compulsary? or Just typing is fine?

When you deal with coaches or mentors via chat programs/ skype etc, is it a must that microphone chatting (+ cam) 'has' to be done?

or when you people have had coaches you have both just do 'typing' only, and emailing too etc?

and without using voice or cam does it look like 'not a complete' coaching deal?
or it doesn't matter aslong as the typed info is valuable

Typing just eats away the valuable time you have to spend with a coach or a mentor. . . unless you are JUST Skyping questions and answers as you have the time. But if you have a scheduled appointment then voice is preferable. You probably don't need a mic since most laptops have built in mics and you don't have to do webcam - but voice is necessary if you want to get any work done between you.

I think voice chat would be preferable, since typing will take up a lot of time if you charge an hourly rate. Webcam might not be as important though.

Voice is probably preferred do to the speed.

I suppose if you are more comfortable with text, maybe due to an accent or something then it would be fine.

Not using a Web Cam shouldn't be much of an issue.

For every style of coaching, there's a student. If you would prefer to coach via email or chat, then target students who may be shy, or for whatever reason prefer to also type etc. This would be an ideal match.

Coming from the perspective of a coach, I always have coaching that includes voice. If a student wanted text only, I could deal with that but most prefer voice because it's much quicker and easier to communicate and more effective.

I don't know anyone that would spend money for type-only coaching. It just seems unprofessional and not really worth the time. It's so much easier to talk and interact by speaking. I guess that's why we evolved that capability

I would spend money for type only coaching. In the past I've been part of email access only programs offered by name brand mentors, and I'm sure there are currently still email access only, or chat type programs out there. The fact that you find it unprofessional simply means that you would not sign up to such a program.

I do coaching via text ONLY. For one very simple reason...

The person will have a back log of saved chat history in-case they ever need to go back and look at resources or information that was talked about.

Voice chat can be a terrible way to teach unless the student is taking notes while talking to you... So in the end you may as well just text chat and have it all written down and saved from the beginning.

      I do agree with this.

To all of the people saying voice coaching saves time, well it might in the initial delivery of the information. But when you have that student coming back and emailing you and asking you to remind them about something you talked about in the voice chat, all of a sudden you are actually wasting time.

For coaching I prefer things like private forums. The reason being that with text answers you don't tend to fluff around and drag things out like you do in a voice conversation. Someone asks a question and you answer it. Having it there in text means they can also come back and re-read it whenever they want AND other students can read those same questions and answers so you don't have people asking the same things over and over.

        This.

If I were looking for "coaching" I would take this over any amount of Skype or phone. People put "value" on live voice that it just doesn't have.

If you need someone to always hold your hand, maybe you require it.

They do take notes... and of course screen share gives information that could not be conveyed by text ;-)

I see a benefit to and prefer a mixture of the two, voice and text/email/private board.

I think it is beneficial to be able to talk to someone over Skype or phone because your mentor can often times get to the heart of your needs quicker by listening not only to the content of your response to their questions but also how you answer, if that makes sense. If you can get your mentor to agree to having the live sessions recorded you can listen to them again so you can catch things you missed the first time.

Then, if you can communicate with your mentor in between live sessions via email or private board you can ask questions that come up when you are applying what they taught you. This gives you the paper trail of the answers to your questions and will allow you to go back and review when you have questions again.

    Jon.
